I really want a few elements from that set but not the whole thing and not at $350. I'd love tp have Leia, Lando, the cloud car and it's pilots.

OH NO!
I didn’t pick it up yet, but I definitely will. To each his own, obviously, but I’m not getting the hate. It is criminally overpriced, but it’s the first real cloud city playset, and I’m a sucker for lego SW playset style stuff.

I’m curious, how would you guys improve on it? You could obviously go the Death Star II route and make it a full size display model style set, but as a playset, I’m not sure what else they could have done here.

Anyone here into the old 80s 12v trains? The trackside accessories range was cool (that signal! The automated crossing gates!) and the sheer size of the range was incredible to modern eyes.

Kinda tempted to hit Bricklink and pick up an old 90s monorail, too.

Well, I hope you have really deep pockets!

The airport monorail will run you about $500+ for a complete set with no box to closer to $1000 and up when it includes the box! The popular 12V train 7740 is also from about $200 and up with no box!

I got a few of those some years ago when the prices were not quite on this level and all I can say that it's a drat shame that Lego pretty much never made any real accessories for the 9V system. The signals and automated gates and everything else was just amazing (even if the 12V rails are a pain in the rear end to assemble and nowadays regularly result in the little tabs on the sleepers breaking off due to the age of the bricks).

On the other hand, sets of that vintage, except for stuff like monorail tracks and motor, basically use the mostly the super-basic pieces (especially the 12V trains, the monorails are a bit newer so have more "special" pieces), so it may be cheaper to piece them together?

I've no interest in the original boxes, and bricklink has less-than-perfect Monorail sets for painful but acceptable prices.

Supposedly the reason for the slow decline in accessory sets for Lego trains was that they didn't sell anything like as well as the big sets. The modern company designs its train sets to be big-ticket Christmas presents and pretty much nothing else. This is a shame, because I'd love one of those 00s engine sheds that now sell for their weight in gold, and the 9v and 12v station sets were no slouches either.

You know, you're right. I've never really thought about it like that, but it's true, these days Lego just makes an expensive passenger set and an even more expensive cargo set and that's it... But back in late 1990s/early 2000s you could get even stuff like this train car wash facility:

...and of course the "UCS" train shed which contains among other things a brick built lathe!

I still have a working 1990's/2000's train in my storage, this one:

I also had a railway crossing from a later batch, a track-cleaner from the same line, and signpost-repair lorry. I build my own station and botched together a traincar that could hold helicopters. It was mostly mismatched themes but the variety was just great. :3:

I would have liked modular rooms or something so it was actually displayable, and significantly more interior detail. Some areas look insanely bland. The overall structure and stuff like the landing pad just feel like a big waste of space/parts. Basically it's just kind of ugly ,I don't like the way they prioritized parts usage, and I don't know where I'd put it.

Still might pick it up someday if I can find it at a discount.

I guess where the scale is such that a person or minifigure is below that of a single brick? Even though these are huge, they would still conform to that.

So YIL that the awesome 15" deep Billy Bookcases I bought a few years back at IKEA are no longer sold, which sucks because I need to find a modular-friendly shelving solution. I'd really like my modulars to be adjacent to each other so as to reap the neighborhood street layout benefits, and I'm looking for a tall set of shelves rather than long (I only have about 6.5-7' to work with).

Does anyone have a good bookcase they use to display their danish ABS shapes?

I did find these guys, but I'm not sure about the non-adjustable shelving aspect of it.

Color may be the problem! I'll try with that being open ended. Do you have links to the ones you found?

Go along to Ikea with a baseplate.

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

Or a ruler, standard baseplates are 25cm square.

Ikea has/had some nice pine shelving options that had about 3cm of excess with a lego baseplate, but I forget what they called them.. probably something in the ekby line but I don't see the pine versions on that page.

Hanging shelves sucks but the flexibility they provide can't be beat.

IIRC, the Galant series are 30 inches wide, in the shelf. I think the top part is 15 inches deep and the bottom half is 16. I might be off a bit. They are modular and also made to be linked together. So perfect for modulars. I have the Temple of Airjitzu on the bottom half and there is still space front to back. Next to it is Spaceship x3.
