What are you saying? She saw magic on her homeworld like, right in the first couple of pages third page of the comic.

Edit: there was one more page than I remembered.

solomon david is -so- close to enlightenment. he had the chance to witness it being attained. but his fault is the perfect fault of the patriarch, from the Pharisees on down through to every CEO who drives his business into the ground trying to save it.

"this is mine, so nobody else gets to make mistakes with it."

his sons could probably do a decent job shepherding his people! they're smart enough to recognize their empire has a single gigantic glowing weak point, behind Daddy's immaculately sculpted chest, and brave enough to put on a united front when he asks them "so, kiddos, how could this break bad for me."

but they'll make mistakes that Solomon David would not have made, and they would mar his perfect creation, and so he will not willingly relinquish power for fear they might not do it right

unlike someone who realized "actually wait a minute that in and of itself is not doing it right, gently caress my empire, pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs and point me to the nearest swimming noodle vendor"

nah, he told you. he wants. corpses of the gods, how he wants. he wants to pursue the path to Royalty, to set his kingdom aside, and get back to the pursuit of enlightenment. he does not want to spend the rest of eternity playing nursemaid to an empire of idiot children.

what he does not grasp is that they will remain idiot children as long as Throne's Most Ripped Helicopter Dad is there punishing them for every failure to live up to his impossible and contradictory expectations. be loyal to me unto willingness to die, but do not sacrifice yourselves on my behalf. advise me of how my empire might fail, but don't dare suggest that I might be the weak point. everything within the Celestial Empire is as Solomon David wills it, and what Solomon David wills is simultaneously "someone demonstrate that they can take this off my hands" and "NOBODY GETS TO loving TOUCH MY PRECIOUS."

all the demiurges have been in power and stagnating for scores of lifetimes, anything they still want they have definitively decided they're not ever going to act on

except for Jagganoth, I guess, he just dreams big.

it's not really clear at all in what way Solomon's empire would be any less conducive to attaining demiurge-grade preeminence than what came before. he is, however, doing the libertarian thing of demanding everyone bootstrap up from nothing to the level where they can directly compete with the guy who already runs everything.

I'd exclude Gog-Agog from that as well, because she's so weird. Like, the birth of the first of the other Demiurges might well be closer to the current time than it is to Gog's "birth"; she is ancient and bizarre, unlike anyone or anything else in the comic, so assuming she's having existential crises like the mortals are seems like a mistake.

Operant has mentioned in a tumblr response on something that Gog Agog is deeply tragic in some way we haven't seen yet.

Oh, of course. I mean, she's an insane, animate pile of worms that has existed for eons; there's no way that she's not deeply hosed up in some way.

But given her supposed age and her weird personality, "has stopped pursing things she wants because it's been so long seems really unlikely to me. Like I said, she may well have been much, much older than the other Demiurges are now when the Demiurges first came into power; we admittedly don't know the specifics, but given that she's older than all the other Demiurges "by a large, large margin", her time as a Demiurge herself might amount to less than half her existence, if that, and yet she was still motivated to, you know, become a Demiurge and all when that came up.

She definitely has her own problems. I just highly doubt that they're the same problems, beyond things like "Jagganoth wants to obliterate everything", that the human (or Servant) and not-quite-so-ageless ones have. It seems very unlikely that her issues won't be bizarre and unique to her, given how bizarre and unique she herself is.

Darth Walrus

I mean, her sin is Envy, and she’s a pile of worms who clearly cares quite a bit about appearing human and being a patron of human culture. Those facts alone seem to tell you a fair amount.

to reiterate the whole cosmic horror chat I really don't think KSBD is the kind of story where the hosed-up monster overlord of 1/7 of the universe is totally divorced from recognizable human concerns and motivated instead by, like, making really good topsoil or whatever.

also was she motivated to become a demiurge? I sorta remember some passing comment that she had some kind of Earthworm Jim situation going on.

Earthworm Jim, star of video game and cartoon, was a mere earthworm before being exposed to a super suit that made him evolve into sapience.

like the lyrics go,

Jim was just a dirt-eating, chewy link of worm flesh,
but all that came to a crashing end, ha ha ha! Ahhh!

I wouldn't be surprised if Solomon's need to be loved and respected was unconsciously influencing the people under his rule. The power of God probably requires constant focus to prevent your subconscious from nudging the steering wheel once in a while.

Good luck asking someone who thinks he's almost enlightened if maybe he can't handle basic control over his power, though.

Solomon just really has father issues okay. It just happened that his society manifested as a giant civilization looking to and trying to please Solomon as their fatherly figure ruling and protecting them.

The discussion of the Demiurges in regards to pursuing what they really Want makes me think about Jadis.

She's (more or less) seen the Shape of the Wheel, which is pretty much the pinnacle of knowledge, so other than that whole "I Want To Die" aftereffect she's probably one of the closer ones on the path to Royalty, presuming she has something else to want after death so it doesn't slow her down.
