I don't see that on here very often but it's a weirdly common sentiment on a bunch of other forums. Maybe if y'all bothered to hold developers accountable for making actually fun videogames people would actually think to play JRPGs for the gameplay. (I don't really think Dragon Quest 11 has this problem as even if it is easy it's well designed and has some interesting character and boss design. This is mostly aimed at stuff like the ps1 era final fantasies and stuff like xenogears.)

At worst extremely tedious.

I'm in part 2 where you return to the Heliodor sewers. How strong is the dragon and can I kill him right now with just me and Hendrik (as a Guest right now)? Edit: I'm level 35.

Do the poison needle and other instant kill weapons work against metal enemies in DQXI? I believe they did so in prior games.ThisIsACoolGuy posted:I saw a pep power that I didn't recognize that between MC, Erik and Jade. Used it and got 2 falcon swords lol. Total momentum killer. Game design matters. The 3DS version is either better or worse at this depending on how you see it, in that skills learned by non-basic jobs don't carry over to other jobs, so generally speaking there is no reason to not just cap out all the basic classes and then pick a single top tier job to use. Unless you wanna get into Monster Vocations in which case hooboy that's a lotta grind. (Honestly DQ7 is pretty easy after you get jobs since they probably didn't really manage to balance for the huge disparity of power the players might have so they erred on the side of caution. This means that there is essentially no need to minmax, I just do it cuz I like seeing the characters in their various job cosplays.) I've been continuing my playthrough and man I still think DQ7 has not been beaten in the "mini-arc for each city" category. Admittedly that's because it's a huge chunk of the plot, but compare something like depressing statue town or desert adventures or even the entire crazy thing that is the Alltrades scenario to anything from any other game and they just don't compare. And it's not like the main plot of DQ7 is TOO weak, it's just very minimalistic and a lot of it is hidden away deep in the back of those 100 hours. Like, the main plot of DQXI is better and the player characters are definitely more enjoyable and entertaining, but the individual city storylines are extremely weak.

Any advice on how to build out Jade? I just picked her up and I'm starting to feel like I should maybe respec all the points she already had spent and focus in another direction (like maybe spears).

Thunder/Lightning Thrust are good for metal monster killing and Multithrust is an awesome boss killer. I kept points in her other skills, though. The Spear AOE isn't as good as her Allure option which is supposed to scale off Charm (which she'll have lots of), and the Fisticuffs tree gives you some good general purpose damage skills and boosts Spear damage.

I feel like I'm the only one that specs her into claw. It's a super simple gameplan: Max out her crits and spam triple claw. She's doing close to 200 more damage on average than anyone else.

I guess it is pretty unintuitive to cap out all the basic jobs before moving onto the cool fancy intermediate jobs.

I just picked her up and I'm starting to feel like I should maybe respec all the points she already had spent and focus in another direction (like maybe spears). Take her into Spears or Allure. Pick up Fisticuffs if Spears. Take your pick of what other trees if Allure - Fisticuffs may be better, but if you land 2x def down (sap) on a target, the damage dealing skills in her weapon trees will do better than Sexy Beam - especially if 2x attack up. I would personally recommend Allure until you start getting a glut of skill points to completely buy out 2+ trees, then shift into Spear+Fisticuffs or Claws+Fisticuffs. Unfortunatelly, there are very very few ways to boost Allure skills - mostly +Charm via gear. There is very little synergy with other trees (fisticuffs, for agility, and any defensive bonuses, but flaw HP absorb doesn't work, because you Allure skills, minus hip drop, are not weapon attacks). It IS however very good all on its own, and fantastic when you don't have many skill points to go around. Hell, it's still incredibly good regardless, because Sexy Beam scales so well with Charm, but after a point you'll have so many other skill points you'll just want to do something else down the line.

The mobile ports are the best ones available for all 1-6 unless you really hate motion controls. (The Super Famicom version of 3 maybe beats the mobile version if you're willing to go to the trouble of installing the fan translation patch, but even then it won't have the modern localization.) 1 is really primitive and 2 is still not that great, but 3 and onward are all excellent games.

The PSX and PS2 ver of 4 and 5 respectively are the best ones for those titles, but they only had Japanese releases. Doesn't really matter which you play 6 on, though. Def go super fami + patch for 3 if you can handle it.

corn in the bible posted:I believe in the original version skills carry over between jobs so you aren't hosed over if you switch later It's a bit of a give and take there. It ended up making every character nearly exactly the same by the end of the game, which was really boring, but it WAS probably more intuitive and user friendly than the new system. Also I guess the new system has a different grind incentive in that Monster Vocations DO carry over all of their skills so you can technically get busted stuff on the "wrong" class if you're willing to grind like a billion battles. Personally I just cannot be hosed to deal with the Monster Vocations at all, they're a pain and didn't get the grind reduction the human classes did, when they were ALREADY grindier.

Regarding 4-6 mobile - 32-bit DS 3D is a little eeehhhhh but they did a really good job with the sprites at least, unlike DQ7/DQ4 PS1. I've only played mobile 4 but plan to buy the others eventually. Good versions.

In DQ6 and 7 when you learned something from a class you had that ability or spell forever. Mastered Ranger for Blazemost and swapped over to Priest to work on unlocking Sage? Still had Blazemost to use for nuking bosses.
