I wish I had a better name for what genre he was aping in black rainbow. It's very much the exact jam of "ex machina" and I guess in a looser way Jurrasic Park and Westworld. Man vs creation?

e: haha wrong thread On topic - I convinced a buddy of mine that lives in Singapore that he needed to see Mandy asap. He then managed to convince a group of 8 co-workers of his to all go with him, and he texted this from the theater about 2 hours ago. Eagerly awaiting an update to see how that went for them!

I almost left during the confrontation with the biker gang in their lair. The movie felt like it was pretty to look at, but mostly leaning on stylistic gimmickry (not just by looking unique but also in terms if directing and editing) that didn’t really cohere with or contribute to a boilerplate revenge story without much substance. Glad I didn’t, though. Things did pick up after that. This was an alright movie, it’s an interesting take on how the New Age movement of the 60’s and 70’s ultimately produced the Reaganite generation. In particular, the way it depicts the mythic American landscape is phenomenal.

The only thing I would have liked, as was already mentioned, a little more time given to the revenge in the second half. My gold standard for chainsaw violence is Evil Dead '13, so when the guy fell on the chainsaw, but all you saw was him fall down, and then the overhead shot of blood spraying everywhere I felt like a second or two of direct contact was missing. I'm not typically looking for additional gore, but when you're dealing with LSD biker demons who burn people to death, there could be just a little more retribution. The dude who got stabbed down the throat for like 30 seconds and the final head crush felt appropriate, though.

When Cage lit a smoke off a burning skull I could have sworn that he had done that in a movie before (and maybe he has), but I was thinking specifically of him drinking a beer out of a foe's skull in Drive Angry. e: Mandy is def an arthouse cousin of Drive Angry

That kinda bugged me at first so I was surprised to see it paid off.

A little disappointed it's not as weird as Black Rainbow, but still very enjoyable. Hopefully Cosmatos doesn't need a decade for his next one!

GQ posted a pretty fascinating interview with Nicolas Cage reflecting on his biggest roles, and I think it really helps to illuminate just how... intensely focused he gets into his roles, and how outside of the box he is when it comes to applying characterization. There's also a moment where he talks about "getting that Super 8 feeling" where when a movie is going well it reminds him of the movies he and his brother used to make as kids that sheds a lot of light on the choices he makes as well. It's a pretty great watch all-around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_WDLsLnOSM

I just finished watching it a second time, and yep, it's still incredible. I really hope there's some kind of making-of feature on the Blu-Ray. I need to know how Panos lit/colored some of these shots. I found this in the IMDB trivia, but I wonder if there's more to it than just this: Also saw this, which totally adds up and made me

Weird question but is there any nudity in this movie? I’m not a perv, but I plan on taking a friend who’s a sexual abuse survivor, and even scenes of nudity can freak her out a little. I’d just check the MPAA but it’s not even rated.

I feel like it probably crosses the line. It depends on what bothers her specifically, I suppose. There's no outright depiction of sexual violence, and the whole film has a very dream-like atmosphere, so it has a very different feel from most revenge films. I'll go through everything that might be potential bad news while trying to be somewhat vague: - There's a scene where a man tries to non-violently coerce a woman into sex, including exposing his body to them/the viewer, but is turned down. He masturbates angrily afterwards, and that shot is from his shoulders up as he looks at the woman/the viewer. - There are a couple animated scenes of a naked woman, though they're not really sexual at all, more of a surreal thing. - There's a character that has a knife codpiece, and he watches pornography (more naked people) on a crappy TV. I didn't even see the codpiece in my viewing. There's apparently the implication that he had killed someone with that somewhere in that scene but I missed that, too. - There are drawings of naked women at one point, but they are 100% non-sexual. - At one point a man calls for a woman to be sent into his room, and it's pretty obvious why, but it cuts away right after she enters. There may be minor spoilers here but I don’t feel like picking them out, so just warning you. I have no idea how I will boil away the regret of not seeing this in theaters. Since the only option was VOD if I wanted to see this before Oct 30, I had to take it. Unfortunately Amazon would not allow it to play in HD, polluting what was and what wasn’t meant to be grained or fogged out. Regardless the blown out hues, ethereal shadows, and ludicrous designs certainly were beautiful and I eagerly await being able to rewatch it again on my modest, but still nice, TV. Though the colors and cinematography make for the easiest piece to quickly absorb and either enjoy or critique, I think the sound is by far the most impressive part of the film. The ethereal drones in the calmer pieces of Jóhann Jóhannsson soundtrack provided wonderful vibration to hold your breath to, but what stuck with me was the grinding timbre of the voice modulations and the more malevolent tracks. Like dragging your face on pavement. Like licking gravel. It was mesmerizing. The most absorbing part being the voices of the Black Skulls. They were exactly the otherworldly force I had hoped for. And like The Plague of “Hobo with a Shotgun”, I am left craving more. Always more. But I suppose that is part of the curse of finding those types so fascinating. I love the levels of mythos built around them with barely a descriptor given. The plain explanation of them being crazy bikers on LSD functions, but there so clearly is more present. The horn of Abraxas used to summon them is a reference to ancient Gnosticism, which is a snarl of crazy beliefs that include bad rear end things that have become modern fantasy tropes, like demons, archons and the demiurge. There is a gigantic rabbit hole of amazing, fun and batshit crazy things ancient people believed. I love that they are integrated like this because it makes the story feel so much more expansive while allowing my own imagination greedily build its own theories. The film gets to simultaneously be a simple “revenge on bikers and some lovely hippies” story AND a labyrinthine “revenge on literal demons and evil cult worshipers” one. “Beyond the Black Rainbow” had what is probably my favorite trailer of any film but I ended up being a disappointment to me because it failed to be as evocative as I had imagined. I certainly will be revisiting it, but I remember it spending far too much time in the ethereal, being all steam and no boil until the last 5-10 minutes. This, however, surpasses all I had hoped for. As cliché as it is, the film is both horrifying and beautiful. It feels as though Panos Cosmatos has an uncommon eye for both and good god I can’t wait until his next film. The thing I fear the most is all this feeling being afterglow, and the bizarre “joy” I feel from this movie will dissipate and leave me empty. At least it was fun getting here. “Blood for blood” “More”
