Ship's cats have a history almost as long as ships. Basically every ship had at least one cat for pretty much all of history. There were also a lot of superstitions around them but the end result was "be very good to boat kitties." Sailors would risk their lives to save the cat. Saying they were respected members of the crew is an understatement. Phone posting so I can't post it but it shouldn't be hard to find. There's a picture of Churchill visiting a ship and the first crew he greeted was the cat. There are pictured of ship's cats wearing uniforms people made for them. Sometimes they'd be given ranks. Sailors took very good care of their cats. Just image search that poo poo and prepare for endless adorbs.
