Terranigma owns, it's a shame it didn't make its way to the US because it's better than Chrono Trigger imo

Quintet tried to make the same game 5 times: Actraiser 1 and 2, and the 3 Soulblazer games, and basically experimented with a different form for each game. Terranigma is still flawed and it would be a better game if it didn't have the weird convention of player levels and instead just made the enemies mechanically more difficult over time, I think that's probably what they were originally going for but it turned out it was too hard to scale the difficulty curve so they threw in levels to give a sense of progression. It would be cool if instead of levels, you got access to more magic rings and could just use them on the fly as regular moves, instead of going into a menu. It's got the best story though.

The best RPG mechanicaly speaking is probably Lufia 2, but it has the most generic RPG story ever.

Wrath of the Bitch King posted:

It had great characters and individual arcs for them, but the overarching story was just "ok." Time travel shenanigans were handled really, really well though.

I'd argue that SMRPG had better individual locations and settings, though. And a better story, from what I remember. But it's been a while.

I put Terranigma above both easily, and IoG is still a great game despite having a completely miserable tone from start to finish.

IoG is just a strange game, I still don't get what half of the things that happened in that game were supposed to be, like was the light from the comet supposed to be mutating radiation or something? I think my favorite scenes are when the painter paints his self portrait and locks himself in the frame in some bizarre form of suicide, and when the russian roulette guy kills himself and leaves you his kangaroos so you can cross the desert. It's got a kind of dream logic from the minds of a bunch of early 90's Japanese hippies, and I'm pretty sure La Mulana was inspired by those games, the tone is so similar. It's got the best mood and the best music of any game on the SNES, it's truly creative even if it's not perfect.

SMRPG was fun but also kind of ugly and I wouldn't say it was a very great game. CT was really good but I just don't love it as much as the Soublazer games.

The game gives you accurate directions (and hints in the form of birds that circle around you to indicate you're going the proper direction) but the compass is weird. I guess maybe I didn't find that part as annoying since 3 had the Desert of Death and not only does the guy in game give you incorrect instructions but so did the official strategy guide.

There's actually two sets of instructions in game, one of them is true and the other isn't. I forget which is which, but you're told directions before going into the desert, and also there's instructions when you (I think) make camp.

I am enjoying it. I think once you have dash, things improve exponentially over the early game, which I did find frustrating and bad.

The map system is terrible, though. I don't know what they were thinking. You need to return to one of the infrequent checkpoints to update your map with newly explored areas, you cannot update your map with the areas of a new region you have explored until you find the map dude in that region (which can be difficult/deep in the region) and buy a map from him, and most bizarrely of all you have to give up an equipment slot if you want to fuckin see your dude on the map.

Also I probably shouldn't have played Dead Cells right before I started it. For all its own issues, Dead Cells' combat and movement mechanics are glorious and Hollow Knight's are... passable.

The map part is frustrating, but it makes sense. You are a warrior bug, not a cartographer. It makes sense you wouldn't be able to make a map. As for filling it in, would you sit down and pull out your crayons in a dangerous location? When you look at a paper map do you automatically see where you are? No, you would need some sort of magic.

I seriously enjoy Dead Cells, it's like video game crack, but Hollow Knight is a much much better game.

Hollow Knight has drat near perfect controls and movement I have no idea how anyone could think it's bad wtf

Unpopular Dead Cells opinion even though I like it a lot. It gets way too samey way too quick and the character upgrades totally stink and add almost nothing to the game outside of essentially functioning as keys to new areas. In HK or any good metroidvania your new abilities not only give you access to new areas, but become things you constantly use in gameplay. I think I have all of the abilities in dead cells and I haven't used a single one except to get to new areas. The only one that actually does anything other than unlock a gate is the wall climb, and it's also useless and actually hinders me when I stick to things I don't want to.

Making sure to use the jump attack (down+jump button in mid-air) all the time is probably key for upping your pace. Also the roll functions like the rolls from Smash Bros: you're invincible for a portion of it and can roll through enemies and attacks. There's a speed boost for killing a few enemies in a row, too.

Where Dead Cells really shines is its weapons. They didn't just slap different effects on the same crap; they all have unique attack animations/combos.

Hollow Knight's controls are certainly not bad, they're just very simple/traditional. What I especially miss from Dead Cells is that jump attack, since the one in Hollow Knight is a big soul using thing rather than a basic movement mechanic. Even so, Hollow Knight is probably the better game since for all the good stuff about Dead Cells, it feels half-baked and ultimately kind of unsatisfying.

Lufia 2 was the only SNES game ever translated into Dutch, and came in one of those big boxes with a full sized strategy guide and walkthrough, which is very weird since Lufia 1 was never actually released in Holland and so they just called the game Lufia without any indication that it was a sequel, it was strange when I later emulated the first game and found out it starts with the ending from Lufia 2 as a prologue. I think Terranigma got the same treatment in Germany, with a big box and guide and a wonky translation.

It seems like they tried to cram every possible game mechanic into Lufia 2, it's got a proto-Pokemon type monster collecting system, a built in roguelike and casino with a poker AI (both of which comprise like 90% of the value of the game if you ask me), but the story is really by the numbers, including every cliched rear end character from every RPG and anime show thrown in. I loved it though, the ancient cave was my first roguelike, even if the iris treasures gave you nothing if you collected them all. And I could play it in Dutch!

IoG and Terranigma made me want to travel to all those ancient ruins and cities in real life.

I loved Hollow Knight at the beginning, but got really frustrated with it as things went on.

The map is huge and, in my opinion, not very well structured. You do an enormous amount of backtracking and running into dead ends, not to mention how often you'll die and have to backtrack there, too.

Once I got the dash I got more into it, until I hit another cycle of dying and having to re-do massive parts of the game. I quit playing at about 10 hours and don't really have a desire to pick it up.

And I died so many times in areas I hadn't mapped yet, leading to me basically stumbling around in the dark to get back my hard-earned geo.

For context, I love all the Castlevania games. I'm currently replaying all the 3DS ones. There's backtracking there, too, but it never feels as frustrating or as hopeless. I also love Super Metroid and replay that about once a year.
