A few other newer country or countryish artists to check out: Brent Cobb, Kelsey Waldon, Parker Millsap, Sturgill Simpson, Courtney Marie Andrews. Totally second the recommendations on Tyler Childers and Margo Price. I’m headed to the Hinterland festival in Iowa in a few weeks - anyone else?

I don't hang around this thread, so this track might be a bit broad for you guys, but here's the most country track from Vancouverite Louise Burns' album from last year, Young Mopes. I just posted to the indie thread about the record, but it has a little bit of a slight country vibe throughout, so listeners here might appreciate it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhg7DLu7IyE While I'm here, how great is the track "Civilian" by Wye Oak, hot drat. Also, Marissa Nadler — not a big folk guy, but she is so good. July is the perfect mix of American Gothic and folk for me. I am excited to see her tour this year.

I don’t know if there are many David Allan Coe fans, but the rare, Requiem For A Harlequin has been released on Spotify and ITunes for the first time While I’m here, here are some of my favorite deep cuts. Crazy Mary Now I Lay Me Down To Cheat Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile She Used To Love Me A Lot A controversial figure for sure, in large part from people releasing bootlegs that bundled some of his songs released with noted POS, Johnny Rebel. David Allan Coes influence on country music, from being the ‘original’ Rhinestone Cowboy, to his legendary song writing (Take This Job And Shove It, Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile, Would You Lay With Me) to his (arguably) causing journalist to coin the term ‘outlaw country’ when a photo captured DAC concealed carrying a gun on state... while he was wearing his Outlaws MC vest. His contributions can’t be denied, but remains maybe the least known of the ‘outlaw’ country musicians, albeit because of his difficult temperament and ‘do what I want’ attitude... but then again, what is more Outlaw than that

His son, Tyler Coe (of cocaine and rhinestone ‘fame’) has a blog and talks about his dad which is interesting. According to him, his dad insists on decided how loud the amps are, and since he can’t hear poo poo and doesn’t listen to anybody, most of his shows are offensively loud I just had some of brewery ‘50 West’s’ Paycheck Porter. It will set your head on fire and make your kidneys scream. It sure is fine I actually had it on draft in a pizza joint in Johnny’s hometown of Greenfield. They had all of his albums on the wall, plus a ton of other memorabilia and even one of his hats. The Adams brothers performed there last month and I’m really regretting missing that

I figured since the title also includes folk that I'd at least recommend something to give back to this thread. Some or most of you probably already know Phil Ochs, but if I can help more people find out about him then I'd consider that a good deed done. For the unfamiliar, Phil Ochs was a protest singer in the 60s and early 70s. Think a Bob Dylan that actually believed in the political things he sang about. Phil Ochs idolised Dylan and Woodie Guthrie among others and unfortunately his mental illness got the better of him and he killed himself in 1976. He left behind a considerable amount of songs though and I would encourage people check out the live recordings of him. I personally find them much better since its just him and his guitar and you get to hear all his banter/rants/monologues between songs. Some sample songs: A song about Richard Nixon with a fantastic opening monologue that is scarily applicable to Donald Trump and America today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x8y3PsjEFo Probably his most famous war and one of many anti-war songs in the catalogue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rVTBCtYjoY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lFPIIdud9o "The song is about the rise and fall of a hero, and the public's role in creating, destroying, and deifying its heroes." It is one of his few non-political songs even if it is in essence about the assassination of JFK. Ochs himself considered it the greatest song he ever wrote. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIwbeEGXj5E One reason I like the live versions is the audience reactions to the lyrics where you can sometimes hear some uncomfortable laughter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u52Oz-54VYw

I didn't think anyone could make me like DAC less than DAC in the last few decades, but Tyler is giving it his best shot.

Just happened upon the debut EP from Dee White - I guess it’s the first five songs from his album coming in 2019. I really, really like it. Reminds me a lot of Joshua Hedley and definitely has some Roy Orbison in the sound. He’s only 20 (!) but seemingly has an old musical soul.
