gently caress the UI. gently caress having to hold X to select everything, gently caress the menus where your cursor always starts away from any selection choices, gently caress the missions menu, gently caress having to have a mission selected to see important details instead of putting that in the mission list, gently caress the time menus and general interactions take, gently caress mining costing resources, gently caress several minute travel times, gently caress loading and transport screens that make me sick, gently caress the base building interface

And gently caress the inventory management which is 90% of this game

I just loving hate gambling in video games. It's no fun. I don't want to play poker, I don't want to play blackjack, I don't want to play Koi or Cho-han, or any of that poo poo. I especially don't want to play roulette. It's just so out of place in a game, there's no point to it - there are better ways to get money, more fun ways that actual utilize the mechanics of the game, and when you lose...who benefits? Like, what's the point? Why not make a system that favours the player? Who's going to lose out if that's the case? Fishing is the same way in Yakuza games - it's a random chance where you're staring at the screen, hoping that a) you don't spend five minutes reeling in trash (seriously why does trash fight back) b) the fish you want actually bites and c) you don't get hosed and just lose the fish randomly, wasting all your time.

Thing is, at least gambling has in-game ways to win, those cheat items that let you just get a big victory. What absolutely sucks is Mahjong. Not because it's a game I don't like, whatever. It's because they just love putting in a ton of goals to meet in mahjong. Gotta win 5 times this way, gotta win twice this way, gotta do all the tournaments, gotta win X amount of money in one go or whatever. Like, gently caress. I'm lucky that I have a roommate that enjoys mahjong, but even so there's only so many games of yakuza I can get him to play mahjong in before he gets tired of it.

Oh, and the rules for these games are laughably bad in Yakuza. Koi, most notably. They tell you what cards are required for hand, but don't tell you what the cards are.

"Any five 5-point card" Well what the gently caress is a 5-point card?

I don't understand how they can fix so much with the game, but still someone looks at the UI and goes "yes, this is fine". They found a way to make everything about it a chore.
Inventory management feels even worse. You never really get ahead of it. At first you are dealing with a few resources on your suit, then you get a ship and now the amount of resources has tripled, but your inventory only doubled. After upgrading both a bit, I then got a freighter. Surely a mammoth ship that is designed to carry hundreds of tons of cargo will help, nevermind it has 16 slots. Cool, my huge ship has less inventory then my suit.

Well maybe one day Yakuza will actually deign to teach the rules. But even then, just keep it out of the game. There are other games dedicated to Koi Koi.

I just don't understand the need to take a game in which you're a badass character, fighting tons of guys and fulfilling some cool action hero stereotype, then give you a deck of cards and say "oh hey you're beholden to this deck, no you don't have any abilities, no your experience and power doesn't apply to this, no this doesn't affect any other part of the game at all, and no youve got the same odds as everyone else here"

Fun. Lemme draw a card. Oh, I lost. Okay great can I get back to punching guys?

In games like Fallout, you can change this. High luck means you rake in the cash. In Dragon Quest (XI, at least) the casino is heavily weighted in your favour. In Yakuza, nothing. It's just plain gambling games. Odds are against you. No skill involved (for most of them). Fuuuuun.

It wasn't until waaaay after my first playthrough(s) that I found out you can use the stun gun to temporarily disable cameras or that you can use an armor piercing 10mm pistol to break destructible walls. (Said walls are also all over the drat place, both in the sewers where they're almost always hiding a goodie cache and in missions where they offer massive shortcuts. Since they only get highlighted if you buy the break walls augment, I never really noticed them the first time.)

Absolutely. I beat 0 and Kiwami out even bothering to touch most of the mini games. Platinum Adventure mode unlocks when you finish the story for free roam dick around funtimes, so you really only need to slam your way through them for 100% completion. (And that barely even affects gameplay, you’ll have all your abilities and moves unlocked ages before then.)

Also it isn't optimised very well.

Blood Omen's general difficulty is a bit stupid at times, mostly because of how obtuse some of the secrets are (and some things feel necessary enough they shouldn't be hidden behind secrets). I'm on my way to Dark Eden and I'd read about the Heart of Darkness shrine, so expected to find it and move on after getting some extra healing power because those are some of the rarer collectibles and the collectibles don't respawn. However, the puzzle to unlock the shrine is right at the start of the game at the cemetery. How the gently caress was I supposed to figure that out? The trigger is nowhere near the door, and while to be fair access to this shrine may break the game, they don't have enough hearts in the latter half of the game to justify not using it. Some of this game is fairly obnoxious.

I really liked HR. The writing was actually pretty good for a videogame and the voice acting rocked. I think the thing dragging it down was the XP system. I think Bloodlines sorted it where they gave you XP for completing milestones in the story.

Though I tried a run-through where I just went fully aggressive and you don’t need many Praxis Points to walk into a room and eradicate everyone in that room with the minigun.

HR was really close to being a legendary game (where it is is one that's Extremely Good imo), it just has these little quirks that ruin an otherwise great experience. Such as the bosses being a total shift from the rest of the game or the power regeneration system being really poorly conceived.

I'd criticize the back half for feeling rushed but the original had that exact problem so it'd be pretty unfair.

DXHR is pretty good and replayable. The piss filter and boss fights didn't actually bother me.

It's more that the whole aug racism made absolutely no sense to me. The original deus ex was much more interesting and diverse with the setting and topics. DXHR is all about that transhumanism thing and that's it. Everybody talks about that one topic. The gameworld feels small because of that. Also its a less complex game than the original gameplay wise.

Still love it tho, I didnt know about that AP bullets wall thing. Couldve saved me some praxis.

It feels like they struggled to come up with aug ideas, which only exacerbates the XP system because there's so many dud options. I'm currently playing mostly optimally (not full blown :spergin: style) and I'm pretty much at the point where I have no idea what to put points into anymore.

Also cloaking is absurdly broken and would turn stealth into a joke if not for the fact that often there's a clearly intended stealth route that prevents you from being spotted anyway. Of course, on the flipside, there have been times where I have no clue what the map intends for me to do outside of cloaking past specific guards or employing really finicky knockout chains.

Mind you, while I'm being down on the game cuz that's the thread, the whole reason I'm replaying it is because I love it.

Lunchmeat Larry

The aug racism thing is hamfisted and doesn't make any sense. It goes on and on about people becoming dependent on paying exorbitant amounts for the aug drug - cool, it has a slight Big Pharma Doesn't Want To Cure Diseases They Can Profit From vibe but it's a good base.

Then it just... doesn't do anything with it. You spend so much time arguing about augments and hearing pro/anti arguments that never go a single step further than "augs are unnatural and ungodly", "no they're fun", "no". Nothing beyond background noise about the actual concrete issues that would come up. How desperate people are being exploited and forced to get augs to work in harder and more dangerous conditions, how non-augmented people are disadvantaged in employment prospects etc.

My memory is a little hazy, maybe getting some of this backwards because this was like five years ago but it felt like a waste. It's fuckin cyberpunk actually deal with the themes of the genre

Don't judge me.
I didn't really have a major issue with it in DEHR, but MD entirely dropped the pretenses and used augs as a direct race metaphor. It's like they wanted to tell a story that tackles some really heavy topics, but then found the most chickenshit way to do it, as not to actually say anything about the real world.

Cyberpunk doesn't work when you use the scifi elements as a stand-in for real issues. It works when it uses the scifi elements to examine real issues. Mankind Divided has it backwards.

Would have been a great plot if it had people subscribing to their augmentations the way they do to services today. Get behind on your payments, the company remotely locks down your arms, and you can't do your dockworker job. Then blur the lines between your employer and the companies, throw in some stuff like repo men and pirates selling knockoff or cracked augs, remotely controlled augs, and you got one hell of a cyberpunk story. It's been a while since I played it, this may or may not have been actually in it already.

If I can put on my tinfoil hat for a second, I suspect "[thing] as service" wouldn't be a theme companies like Sony and Microsoft particularly want explored on their platforms.

It's neuropozine - the proprietary drug you gotta buy it from big aug. They smuggle it and everything in that game.

It's not a bad premise but the whole world is like stumped about what to do about the situation and also half the population is inexplicably augmented. People willingly replacing their limbs knowing full well the maintenace costs and about the drug dependency. Also to do what? Apart from military what upsides are there to being augmented?

The player feels like the smartest person in that world.

Also another issue I have with the two games: in HR augs are used as an extension of inequality. Augmented people just have it better off and that causes tension. But for the second game they decided to go for the racism comparison, so they had to cook up an event where most of the upper class suddenly globally turns in to the oppressed underclass overnight. The whole shift between the games is really jarring to me.
