I guess there's nothing really stopping soccer levels of grabbing the opponent's arm and hitting yourself in the face with it but the good thing about the nfl's miles of legislature about body part contact and years of history about being tough is that it's really hard to flop on a legitimate hit and the onus is on the player getting hit in the stomach to get back up.

QB's should protect themselves and throw the ball away or get down if a defender is running free at them. Don't be stupid and you don't take a bone crushing hit has worked for ages, and this horseshit is only happening now because Aaron Rodgers refused to protect himself.

But Rodgers also doesn’t like the change. So its extremely obvious it’s not a change for the players’ benefit. gently caress that.

I mean it kind of is, the issue is that you are trying to enforce the principles for the first time on men who have played the game for 15 years. If this rule were implemented in high school and college, we would see players make sense of it in a decade.

Maybe Rodgers would have another Lombardi if he just went all gumby like Manning and Brady did for the majority of their career.

Play posted:Just push them down or grab their throwing arm and there's no question. It's actually the form tackles that they have a problem with, which is pretty lol. In that case, Cousins was in a so-called "defenseless" posture because he just finished throwing the ball, and Matthews took him to the ground. I don't agree with the call, but next time Matthews should just push him really hard so that he doesn't get called. Another option is kind of dragging him down instead of tackling him down Pushing them down after the ball is thrown? You can bet that's a roughing the passer flag.

Finger Prince posted:Pushing them down after the ball is thrown? You can bet that's a roughing the passer flag. Within a step, so the ball was *just* thrown and it isn't possible to pull up all the way; put the arms out (not necessarily a pushing motion) before you run into the QB. Another important factor though is free rushes at the QB. Now if you come full speed on a free rush you gotta either knock em down or drag em down, anything that gets weight on them or makes contact with your helmet or hits lot or high or where it might appear that you're scooping them can draw a foul. The only thing left to do is use your arms more than anything else

Kalli posted:Yeah, but that sound bite is the only thing anyone wants. A tiny, tiny fraction of fans care about actual analysis, but if they can get a coach to exasperatedly say Playoffs? then they can run that clip for a decade. Like during training camp, assistant coaches / positional coaches give press conferences where they talk through way more detail, but effectively nobody ever quotes one of those for anything. I feel like most beat writers use those press conferences as a personal teaching lesson to learn about the team's schemes so they can be more knowledgeable when they write. but yeah, it'd be cool to learn more about that in the pre-season, rather than as part of post-game analysis.
