Having actually good censors would be sick and I'm not even the least bit ironic about this.

I'd be a great censor.

A look behind the scenes at China’s censorship watchdog

quote:

Liu doesn't even like to use the word "disapprove" when talking with his colleagues. When he feels a movie shouldn't pass review, he instead says: "I don't think film is very solid, what do you think?"

If everyone feels the same way, then the film is disapproved. However, if he is in the minority, he then submits a report with his opinion.

"You need to consider the future of the directors, the investment of the producers, the impact on society and the pressure of public opinion."

Sometimes this review process is even used by studios to market a film. Before Jiang Wen's Gone with the Bullets was released, rumors were flying about a certain part of the film being cut. However, as one of the reviewers of the film, Liu said only two things were changed. Liu said that the rumors were actually a form of marketing, because if audiences heard that the movie was something they were not allowed to see, they would become even more curious about it.

The problem is both that some are unwilling to recognize any gains made in the past few years (i.e. that an american left wing movement is even a vague possibility at all) and others that think that left's current efforts are all that is required. Of course the end result of both viewpoints is an apathy that could cause all of this to stall out.

Electoral politics are useful as a propaganda effort to get true left wing ideas into the public discourse and to seed sectors of the government with political allies but these efforts must ultimately be combined with agitation and mass mobilization efforts on the ground level.

theres nothing wrong imo with electoral politics. the biggest issue socialists in the US face now is that most of the newly radicalized layers of people since trumps election are basically only engaging with ideas through electoral politics, and even more dangerously, almost solely doing so through the democratic party. its not new to the DSA, CPUSA has thrown support behind dems for years and even SA supported sanders and has been positive towards AOC and salazars elections, but the ISO put out a good article recently that I think does a good job of highlighting the strategy the DSA has argued for the dems and what it will ultimately lead to https://isreview.org/issue/110/more-ballot-line

my personal philosophy is vote for Democrats because they're better than Republicans, and don't otherwise engage with elections at all other than via shitposting because the left is basically nowhere near credibly having an independent electoral party in tyool 2018

Yeah, I mean that's about the size of it. Democrats are laughably corrupt, accelerationism is a lie, pull the lever straight D but don't expend a single whit of energy being concerned with or pushing for liberals of any stripe to get into office.

If self-branded "socialist" candidates get into office, concern troll the gently caress out of their compromised positions to agitate, because if SOME socialism makes sense, why not all of it? Why does anyone have to starve? Why does anyone have to live hard in the streets? Are we a civilized society? Why are we taking only 15% more of the elite's stolen wealth? Why not 30% or 40% or 100%? :thunk:

if these people had any sort of actual power maybe that'd make sense but as theyre just a scattering of insurgent candidates facing the entire democratic party, this just seems like the left shooting its own foot to make sure it remains irrelevant.

It's actually a good question just how much communist firms would be able to control the image of an intellectual "property." Obviously you can't control it completely, so you'd end up with a Toho or Sonic situation every time - but there's going to be a lot of give and pull over whether the community determines canon or the creators.

it settling in where doujinshi culture is would be good, and i think even likely. in the absence of the capitalist ip structure there's no way to prevent use but also no profit motive to piggyback, which works right back to short print run fanworks coexisting as what-ifs.

The way it works in folk culture is people just do their own spin on stories and cultural touchstones in the oral tradition, and whichever one is considered the best gets "canonized" in the folk consciousness.

it's fine if, in the ten minutes you spend in a voting booth every two to four years, you push the democrat button. just as long as you do so realizing how completely insignificant it is, and do most if not all of your political work completely separate from that process.
