Sentient Data posted:This may not be procgen in quite the same way as markov chains, but I think it fits and it's really cool This actually makes a big appearance in a Computer Graphics textbook that I'm writing about. The very first runnable program the author teaches you how to make is the Sierpenski Gasket fractal. It's like "hello world" for graphics. You run it inside his website by visiting the link: http://www.cs.unm.edu/~angel/BOOK/INTERACTIVE_COMPUTER_GRAPHICS/SEVENTH_EDITION/CODE/02/gasket1.html That one and the rest of his demos in his folder there each get called out in the various chapters of his book and you can inspect the source code if you open DevTools in the Chrome menu. Graphics education is moving to all web friendly stuff. Happy Thread has a new favorite as of 05:09 on Sep 2, 2018 |

More cool but scary NN stuff: https://twitter.com/ykamit/status/948808761405194246 Generating an image that tries to match what the person is seeing based on brain activity! The areas of brain that respond to different shapes/contrasts we visually perceive are limited to a relatively clear-cut area (the occipital lobe) and there's some uniformity to how the neurons that respond to certain shapes are located relative to each other, so it makes sense that the neural network is starting to get the hang of figuring out the general shape of the object, while actually giving it identifying features is much less developed. I might be wildly off with this speculation, though. Here's the same on a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsp1KaM-avU And here's the paper about this system: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/early/2017/12/28/240317 The Merkinman posted:Wait, you made Baba is You? Yeah, I can see some of the taglines like "Live wolves... dead birthdays?" and "It's the [X] that never dies!" having some Botnik-esque predictive text input in there, but "generated on the fly using top secret code extracted from a decommissioned Scholastic mainframe computer" and the various misspellings of the author's name kind of give things away.

It's pretty easy to determine if supposedly AI generated humor is fake or not: Is it funny? It's probably real. (Like the aiweirdness Tumblr) Is it very funny? It's probably "human curated" procgen like Botnik. Is it not funny? It's probably "I forced a bot to watch 1000 hours of..."

Stumbled to stuff about BigGAN, a neural network that just kind of generates images from other images. Here's a blog post about it: http://aiweirdness.com/post/178619746932/imaginary-worlds-dreamed-by-biggan https://twitter.com/JanelleCShane/status/1046571018507046913 https://twitter.com/ajmooch/status/1046556635446079488 (JanelleCShane posts a lot of really intriguing NN stuff on twitter!) I really recommend checking out the blogpost, the generated images are really cool (and often very creepy!) For easier viewing, the developers of BigGAN have a lot of images available here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lWC6XEPD0LT5KUnPXeve_kWeY-FxH002

Just found out about this blog, via the retro FPS thread. The main appeal there is the combination of Deepdream with Doom, but for some reason I can't stop laughing at this portrait of a cat:

Seeing that I immediately thought of Louis Wain's cat pictures. Those could be good DeepDream material, to be honest!

twoday posted:Does anyone have any ideas for how I could feed a bunch of posts from a particular something awful thread into one of these procedurally generated text dealies? I then took hundreds of pages from a single GBS thread (no prizes for guessing which one), and fed it to char-rnn, here's some sample output: https://pastebin.com/7FuZRYGm It's not great but kinda interesting, the poster names seem to all be the actual posters from input - I guess that's because the names were so predictable (in variety and in the spot they appeared in the input) that it just learned them. The reason I used a single forum thread is because I found it kinda hard to automate ripping this site as a logged in user (because cloudflare kept detecting that I wasn't using real browser - even with user-agent and all headers spoofed), so what I did was pick a large text heavy thread, wrote a simple a script to generate a html page with nothing but links to the pages of that thread, and then "ripped" via manual right-click saving over and over (and it was as tedious as it sounds).
