dunno really. my guess is it's partly practical and it's also "cause shopping." practical because jones and shroyer live there. there's also a patriot prayer-esque group in texas called "texans united for america" or TUFA which has similar rallies and seemed to do the groundwork. gibson and his traveling circus shows up and TUFA has everything all set up, they have the park reserved, they have the sound equipment and a group of followers, bing bang boom simple (notice the security guys they hired?). TUFA has traveled to portland several times, so there's an organizational relationship. that is probably the most important thing.

this thread goes into "cause shopping." you have a lot of little groups bopping around and jumping on the news of the day, or news of the week, bouncing from cause to cause. so now it's "free alex jones" while a month ago it was "left-wing violence." these folks are hunting for a cause which can provide momentum.

Back in the late 00's, there used to be a pitchfork subsite/music blog (I wish that I could remember the name) that had music that was too indy for them. He was sort of loving with the melted neon type aesthetic as far back as the mid 00's, and I think that he was fairly involved with the sound of Drive, even though they didn't use all of the stuff that he wrote for the movie. Was Johnny Jewel/Glass Candy sort of a pre-cursor or an inspiration for vaporwave?

I haven't seen Drive, but the only good Kavinsky song was on the Drive soundtrack. To ask a redundant question, Was he a pre-cursor or an inspiration for vaporwave?

Anything that I've heard that has been called Vaporwave has been really redundant, far too basic and minimal, and not really vocal/song orientated. Were/are there actually vaporwave songs with actual vocals that are actually good?

I really like that whole melting neon gently caress sound until it mostly seemed to just die. Even stuff like John Maus, Neon Indian, and Ariel Pink, who seemed biggish around that time, were decent. It seems like it went underground, got basic, and got co-opted by shitheads. Are people going to think I'm some sort of fash dork for liking the stuff I mentioned above, or are those more root type musicians separated from Vaporwave in a distinct enough way that people tend to get the difference?

In addition to radio spiricoms post, if you want vaporwave "music" and less "sound art" good names to start from are Com Truise, Perturbator, and Mitch Murder; and genres to look at are hypnagogic pop, chillwave, synthwave, and outrun.
