Moths orient themselves in flight by keeping the brightest light source (the moon or sun) in a constant position relative to their body. This works because the moon is so stable and far away that its position does not change as they fly around. So they "know" (it's instinctive and automatic, obviously) that e.g. if they keep the moon above them and to the rear, they are flying upright and in a straight line.

Now imagine what happens if you're a moth flying near a lamp, and instinctually attempting to keep the light facing a specific part of your body.
