All of Sabaton songs come down to this. They are fun to listen for all the cliches of power metal. At the same time, they're quite acceptable as a quick synopsis of military history. For example, the lyrics to Panzerkampf:

quote:

Into the motherland
The German army march
In the Soviet Union summer 1943

Tanks line up in thousands as far the eye can see
Ready for the onslaught
Ready for the fight
Waiting for the axis to march into a trap
Mines are placed in darkness
In the cover of the night
Waiting to be triggered
When the time is right
Imminent invasion, imminent attack

Once the battle started
There's no turning back

The end of the third Reich draws near
It's time has come to an end
The end of an era is here
It's time to attack!

Into the motherland the German army march
Comrades stand side by side to stop the Nazi charge
Panzers on Russian soil a thunder in the east
One million men at war
Soviet wrath unleashed!

Fields of Prokhorovka
Where the heat of battle burned
Suffered heavy losses
And the tide of war was turned
Driving back the Germans
Fighting on four fronts
Hunt them out of Russia
Out of Soviet land
Reinforce the front line
Force the axis to retreat
Send in all the reserves
Securing their defeat
Soldiers of the Union
Broke the citadel
Ruins of an army
Axis rest in hell

The end of the third Reich draws near

and so on...
Sabaton is the Iliad of our time.

Speaking as a huge aficionado of power metal, this describes all of power metal. The entire genre is shrouded in so many layers of irony that at some point people lost track and just honestly started enjoying guitar solos by grown men dressed as elves.

Their old albums are good, but when I saw them in concert and halfway through a song I realized it was a heroic homage to a guy who was in the loving Waffen SS, something in my mind just went crack and I couldn't enjoy them anymore.

They've also released eight albums without growing or maturing musically even an iota, which helps.

That one and the one off their first album about Overlord are their peak. It's all a gentle downward slope into banality from there.

At 12.45 p.m. we embussed and proceeded by HAPLINCOURT, BERTINCOUT and RUYAULCOURT to METZ-EN-COUTURE where we debussed and proceeded on foot through GOUZEAUCOURT to our positions in R.25.b. and d.
Relief was completed at 5.25 p.m. Battalion H.Q. was located in a dug-out at R.25.6.10.65 and the Coys in shelters in sunken roads in the area stated above. The accommodation was of rather poor quality.
