What a national tragedy Food, petrol, and clothes were rationed for the poor well into the fifties, and the homelessness caused by the bombing attacks was only really ended in the mid to late sixties. Many rural communities never really recovered from both the losses in manpower and also livestock which were both government property, and just died off. Lot of people were also really traumatised by it, I know my great-grandad never properly recovered from being an air raid warden and trying to dig dying people out of their burning houses. He was a nervous wreck for the last fifty or so years of his life after that. 2 of my great aunts were blown up, as children, during the war, and my grandmother was still (understandably) sad about that when she died a couple years ago. None of that is particularly atypical of any British family. If you're north American and so families at home never experienced any hardship whatsoever then I get being glib about it, but it was a a real bad time for Europeans, and the only time most of its survivors are ever really open about how much it hurt is just before they die, so something that's already a latent part of the national psyche gets refreshed, albeit with a very different edge to the Dad's Army We All Just Mucked In And Saw Off Jerry official line at a time that's already quite traumatic.

All this talk of 'adequate food' & sending in the army to deliver supplies: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/aug/02/brexit-leave-food-shortages Has got me taking notice of my colleagues who started stocking up on essentials months ago. In the weekly shop we stocked up on a load of tinned goods & plan to add to it over the months. I cant see a downside to this as we have the space & will eat it anyways, if food prices do go up we'll have a reserve. Anyone think I'm overreacting & it's a stupid idea?

I think it was a really long and exhausting day and some delegates just said fuckit and went back to their hotels, thinking that they wouldn't be needed. But they were needed because their candidate failed to get elected and the absent delegates needed a way to save face. Also timezone stuff too, was getting late for some of the east coasters (who also incidentally were older too).
