I noticed that for a lot of thumbnails I pluck from the boingboing thumbnail grabber, there are three "potential" thumbnails sampled around the middle of the video. And I observed a lot of them are the "creepy guy filming himself in a room and shouting into a camera" format. The sizes are also really small from the thumbnail grabber: I'm assuming that holds true for the entire duration of this hour-long youtube video:
