I did point out the split for party purposes in my initial post.

You have to "raid" the armory. The only thing you HAVE to take is a key to a plot door to advance, but you can't advance without going into the armory room and it doesn't change anything if you only take the key but no armor/weapons as far as I know.

I think she approves of that justification, though. I just meant that she goes all lawbot on you if you just break in for the key and excuse it with "I wasn't going to ask for permission in the middle of an attack."

And to be clear, I don't actually mind her being stupid about it; I pretty much expect for there to be dumb characters who pursue their alignment far past the point if it being reasonable in games with an alignment system, it's just a little jarring when she's directly compared to Harrim, whose "what good are your petty 'rules' in the face of the yawning maw that is Oblivion!? :byodood:" stuff is actually a really fun and entertaining character trait.

Valerie is an ex paladin so she's well versed in constantly making the wrong decision because of alignment

Sorry for what is likely a really basic question but I've been playing games for a really long time and especially these kind of isometric RPGs but I cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to be doing with the combat in this game. Am I actually supposed to pause the game after anyone in my party has completed an action so that I can assign them another one (besides autoattack)? Can the non-protaganist characters really only have 1 ability or spell available for AI autocast?

You can set their autocast, but you can also go into options and turn off the default that has them set to not use consumable abilities. They don't really have any concept of an "easy fight" and will happily burn all their poo poo every fight, but if you don't want to have to micro your casters every round, that's probably the best you can do.

I'd like to know this as well. I made a team of much better people, but if I'm going to miss out on extra quests and cool stuff I'll probably stick with the official companions. For people later on in the game, have you had any especially good interactions or fun quests from the companions? Are any of them more worthwhile than others? If it's all the equivalent of Amiri wanting to gently caress that pig by herself then I don't care, but if I'm missing out on actual content I do.

Yeah definitely curious about content gained by having official NPCs along. Will there be any grief having Evil dudes around when I act Good like happened sometimes in BG? Also, does someone have a list of the official companions with stats and stuff? A Kingmaker wiki I found is woefully incomplete.

No, because any progress in this game is hampered by mind numbing bugs or trying to figure out basic poo poo like defensive casting which is all marred by the most gorgnardy goober devs I've ever seen.

I'm also curious if any of the quests go anywhere. Like, Valerie talks a whole lot of poo poo about Shelyn (to my main character, an inquisitor of Shelyn). It would be cool if she has quests that lead her to regaining her faith and paladinhood or something, or if I can get Harrim to smoke some weed and chill and admit things aren't that bad.

Wouldn't Harrim ultimately be down with smoking weed and chilling? He's already got a pretty stoner mindset, if not particularly jovial about it. "Nothing matters, lets just sit on this couch and hit this pipe until the world ends" seems right up his alley.

Part of me wonders if the insane difficulty balancing decisions were predicated on people testing stuff with a group of custom characters instead of the prebuilts like Valerie? The efficiency of a custom fighter or paladin over Valerie is pretty big, and the rest of the characters aren't exactly optimized either. Beyond the really egregious balance decisions if you gave me a group with stat distributions like Keldorn in BG2 or of entirely custom people like IWD I think it would have been a lot more tolerable.

I would assume that (as someone mentioned earlier) the people testing all had huge system familiarity.

Most directly, your kingdom stats give bonuses to your d20 rolls in kingdom events that depend on that stat (and since the DCs go up as the game goes on, levelling kingdom stats is pretty much the only way to keep up with that, unless you're using companions as your advisors). There may be other benefits that escape me right now, since I actually haven't had the time to level any of them in my game because I'm too busy putting out fires.

Only Paladins lose their powers if they fall out of their designated alignment, right? If I dipped a rogue into a level of monk for the freebies, do my monk buffs go away if I become non-lawful, or only with their standard "hey, you still can't wear armor or they turn off" deal?

Yeah, I figured I'd need to be Lawful to pick it even as a dip later, but my plan was basically start as a rogue that is lawful then take a level in monk somewhere in the first couple of levels before there's any chance my alignment would shift away from it, and then just answer stuff however I wanted. If all it does is keeps me from taking more levels of monk, then I'm fine basically picking up flurry and a bunch of free AC for almost nothing. If it turns those off and I have to make sure to stay lawful all game, then screw it I'd just go straight rogue or a couple of fighter dips instead or something?

I'm honestly just throwing stuff together in my head at work.

itt many people never realized Lawful in DnD means you are a crazy person who will always follow the laws to a t, and the laws in these fantasy worlds are always very classist/racist against nonhumans.

Lawful Good translates to "I will follow all the laws religiously, even the ones I don't like. I will fight evil creatures cause it's my job. I may not agree with what I'm doing, but I'm LAWFUL. Also every Paladin Order has very strict rules about Orcs/Goblins/most nonhuman lesser types like Kobolds."

Neutral Good translates to "I will follow the laws I think are just, but since I work within the system I can also fudge the rules when it's for the good."

Chaotic Good translates to "BORN TO DIE / WORLD IS A gently caress / Kill Em All 1989 / I am trash man / 410,757,864,530 DEAD COPS".

Whooole lot of people think Chaotic Good is the socialism/self focus hero. It's not, you still strive to help others, you just actively hate and ignore all laws, even the good ones. You are more of an anarchist then the proverbial socialist ( who would probably be more of a Neutral Good type. ).

But there's no tree. There's just a room with a level drain trap and a gigantic locked door!
It doesn't matter now anyway, I can't access the grove. Every time I go through the door the game locks up while it's loading.

Edit: Oh right, it's the tree OUTSIDE. Man it really doesn't do a good job of telegraphing things, there's no way I'd have gone up to that at all. I just went through the door, tried to work out what to do and gave up.

Yeah, a lot of times D&D and its derivatives take the lawful/chaotic axis real drat serious for some reason.

So far I've been sticking to Neutral Good pretty well, without feeling like I was railroaded out of the thing I wanted to say. I got the guy from Pitax showing up in my throne room being lovely so I chose the chaotic neutral option because it was the funniest.

As a note, while I'd agree that I'm not entirely happy with how they've interpreted a few alignments overall, it seems to take a LOT of chosen dialogue choices to actually switch alignment. Some are certainly weighted higher, but so far starting at NG I've only slightly moved the indicator (mostly in a rough small circle) and I've picked choices from most of the spectrum at this point.

Basically, it feels that clerics and paladins should be generally safe from class ability loss so long as you're not deliberately trying to never pick your alignment option.

edit: Mostly good and neutral options of course, but there's been a few evil picks in there too. Like Lander's solution to the cow issue. Seriously peasants, this is not the baron's problem.

The two most recent editions of D&D ditched the alignment requirements for paladins and they abide by more generalized oaths instead. Because alignments are real pieces of junk. Planescape Torment did alignments right, where 90% of the time it'd shift from true neutral to chaotic good and stay there. But you couldn't become a paladin so I guess that point is moot.

Verdant Grove contains some plot, but I'm not sure if it's critical in any way?

Anyhow, the game will just progress, as time passes new events will start popping up that demand your attention, which then continues the plot.
It's honestly a pretty natural way to handle it, and I quite like how it flows from chapter to chapter.
