in the "marketplace tech" segment on morning edition on npr just now they had on an analyst for the global electronic vehicle market she dissed tesla and said the US will be the last of the first world to transition away from internal combustion engines; europe will be way ahead because of the volkswagen scandal. as the interview was ending she gave about three seconds to "buuuut china will be first by a mile" for unnamed reasons and then the interview was over

I can see why China would want to move away from gas powered vehicles since the gas has to come from out of the country and that's a thing Xi hates, but there's also no infrastructure for it so

none of these brain geniuses talking about the move to electric vehicles ever has any plan to deal with massively increased electrical grid load, or in the US, the problem that anyone who doesn't live near their job needs lots of range to commute and hours-long charge times don't cut it.

https://www.cgdev.org/article/chinas-belt-and-road-initiative-heightens-debt-risks-eight-countries-points-need-betterquote:Pakistan: Pakistan, by far the largest country at high risk, currently projects an estimated $62 billion in additional debt, with China reportedly financing roughly 80 percent of that. Big-ticket BRI projects and the relatively high interest rates being charged by China add to Pakistan’s risk of debt distress. Lenin's Imperialism: quote:The principal spheres of investment of British capital are the British colonies, which are very large also in America (for example, Canada), not to mention Asia, etc. In this case, enormous exports of capital are bound up most closely with vast colonies, of tile importance of which for imperialism I shall speak later. In the case of France the situation is different. French capital exports are invested mainly in Europe, primarily in Russia (at least ten thousand million francs). This is mainly loan capital, government loans, and not capital invested in industrial undertakings. Unlike British colonial imperialism, French imperialism might be termed usury imperialism. In the case of Germany, we have a third type; colonies are inconsiderable, and German capital invested abroad is divided most evenly between Europe and America. quote:Since we are speaking of colonial policy in the epoch of capitalist imperialism, it must be observed that finance capital and its foreign policy, which is the struggle of the great powers for the economic and political division of the world, give rise to a number of transitional forms of state dependence. Not only are the two main groups of countries, those owning colonies, and the colonies themselves, but also the diverse forms of dependent countries which, politically, are formally independent, but in fact, are enmeshed in the net of financial and diplomatic dependence, typical of this epoch. We have already referred to one form of dependence—the semi-colony. An example of another is provided by Argentina. https://www.ft.com/content/e150ef0c-de37-11e7-a8a4-0a1e63a52f9c China's "no strings attached" lending is purely out of the good of their hearts, it's definitely not imperialism guys!

you can watch it here 学习大会 literally translates as "study session" or "study meeting" but because 习 is the character for xi's last name it's also a clever pun. this is part of a series which translates to "socialism is pretty cool." the first part was called 马克思是对的 ("marx was right") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1qCtjbnj3E
