Yeah the ashen remains of her face still look like her before they're blown to dust by the wind. I understand some hesitation to fully buy in, though. I still had a tiny inkling in the back of my mind that Cosmatos might try to pull a switch. When Red confronts the cenobite by the fire, dude says "she's still... " and for a moment, I expected him to say "alive". So when he said "she's still burning", it was like gently caress ok. Origami Dali fucked around with this message at 20:24 on Oct 2, 2018 |

The face blend is so eerie, I just think about it every now and then and get goosebumps.

I ate some edibles before seeing the movie and I was tripping out during the face blending.

Maybe it's just a classic case of goon face-blindness; I definitely thought the charred remains resembled her, but I guess I was just holding out hope. And yeah, looking back the tripping scene leading up to the face swapping still sticks with me as a complete mind-gently caress.

I don't think a major release was ever really intended for this movie - they didn't bother submitting to the MPAA which I think still locks you out of the major chains. I do think Mandy will continue to get screened as a Midnight Movie for years to come.

A couple of people have mentioned this in the thread, and maybe it's just that I look at midnight movies differently, but I don't really see it as one. Mandy is fantastic, but it isn't really the kind of "fun" I think about when I think about midnight movies. If more of it were like the Cheddar Goblin and Too Many Cooks throughout I could see it, but it isn't really a movie you gather up your friends for midnight fun. Unless are involved, that I can see. And even then, having other people there I think would be weird as gently caress on anything higher than . I just don't see this as a movie to get drunk and have a blast. Not that I don't hope for it to continue to get screenings in perpetuity. Coffee And Pie posted:No joke, I was loving dreading some rear end in a top hat trying to start a MST3K riff fest during that scene, thankfully everyone shut the gently caress up People chuckling at Cage's performance in the bathroom I can get because of how outrageous Cage can be combined with laughing being a way to ease uncomfortable tension, but someone quipping during a scene where a guy cries while a visage of his burnt girlfriend is blown away by the wind would just be loving mind boggling. It's interesting hearing that for so long this was a exploration in "young v old". Hiring Cage really killed that, though I'd argue it just changed to be more of "isolation v community". Red and Mandy are physically isolated from the world but function idyllically as a small community unto themselves. The Children of the New Dawn on the other hand are physically a community, but like how most cults do it, they don't have other connections than with Jeremiah. And even then for some of them, like Mother Marlene, he leaves them completely isolated.

Plus RE: The gross: this film had a really atypical release between the number of limited, one night showings in most markets and it's same day digital release. The people behind this film are going for both the long game in multiple markets rather than the quick buck off the domestic circuit. Considering that this weird tiny film is close to making $1 million is probably cause for celebration.

There was a Business Insider article yesterday or so about how Mandy is actually making a ton of money for what it is and how few theaters it played in: https://www.businessinsider.com/surprise-success-of-nicolas-cage-movie-mandy-causes-shift-in-theater-release-strategy-2018-10

The money it's bringing in with VOD is no joke, top-10 on I-tunes means serious money for a film that I'm sure has a budget of only a few mil.

I'm going to see Mandy on Saturday in a local Alamo. I have no idea what this movie is about, and I have no intention to find out beforehand. However, there is one important question I would like to be answered, and it's "is Mandy a popcorn movie or not?". The reason I'm asking is I discovered I like popcorn in Alamo, so I'm looking forward not only to watching the movie, but also eating a huge bowl of that buttery and salty goodness. Just for example, Death of Stalin was very much a popcorn movie, while Hereditary was very much not one, because holy poo poo did you see that poo poo with that thing and omg... Based on these two data points, could you please clue me in on whether Mandy and popcorn is an enjoyable combination?

Mandy had a budget of less than $10mil, so it's nice to see it doing well. Hopefully Cosmotos can write his own check and make more than one film per decade now.

$800k is pretty loving good for a movie that debuted on VOD at the exact same time and was only in a few hundred theaters.

The popcorn-ness of Mandy was something that was awesome but also one of my few criticisms of the movie. When the acid biker demons answered the horn of abraxas, Nicolas Cage forged his own goddamn axe, and that one dude pulls out an obscenely long chainsaw, I was like, "hell yes" but the goofiness of these scenes was also something of a tonal shift from the dark ethereal atmosphere of the rest of the movie, and that made Beyond the Black Rainbow so great. I really hope I don't have to wait eight years for Panos Cosmatos to make his next film.
