I haven't been able to find a precise date for this photo, but it was taken at some point in the 1870s. It's part of Harry Pointer's Brighton Cats series.

Synthbuttrange posted:Its like a head boob! Quick and dirty and short-effort postage: If you remember from your biology courses, we have eyes with lenses that are basically fluid-filled sacks. Muscles attached to those sacks retract or contract to make the lenses thick or thin to refract near or far light differently, focusing your eyes on what you are looking at, near or far. From memory: Cetaceans (toothed whales, in general) rely on "sonar" to see their world. They emit sound from the front of their skulls and wait for it to bounce back to their ears (also via the bones in their skulls) to literally "see" their world underwater, where light is less useful. Some Cetaceans have also turned their focused sonar sound-beams into weapons. They can focus their sonar enough to harm their prey. I think its been found that dolphins, for example, like to find and focus their sonar into the livers of their prey, which causes internal bleeding in said prey, or at least a stunning before an eating. That's a stunning. The "head boob" seen above is essentially a fatty and watery muscle-controlled lens that focuses that sound like the lens in your eyes focuses light into what you see. But the head boob can also deliver a laser-sharp sound burst if you get to be lunch at a particular moment. The ginormous forehead of sperm whales is also a "head boob", mostly for finding "giant" squid food in a vast ocean. But also for throwing out "hi there" to potential dates, 'cause sperm whales have lovely internet connections. As far as I remember, belugas are not enough researched, but it looks like the one in the quoted video is trying to "see" outside of the water, probably with bad-contacts results. Belugas are very cool to see in person and best to see in the wild, and their breath smells like half-digested seafood (as would yours, if you had a seafood-killing sonic laser attached to your forehead). Thusly sayth and attested by Lisa Simson, grade 2. Corrections and discussions encouraged! Also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetacea

Aww, apparently this is from a sloth orphanage. https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/07/sloths-conservation-animals-endangered-costa-rica/ That's good that they can raise some of the babies that lost their mom. A lot of the sloth species are endangered. His name is Kermie.

This is amazing, thanks! I like that they have sonar weapons, this rules.

I really want to believe that early dogs were domesticated for gathering firewood. How else do we explain their love of sticks?
