Haven't finished the book yet, but I'm 7 hours into a 10 hour audiobook and it hasn't been relevant yet. I have a creeping suspicion his lover is a magic something but I can't think of anything that even hints at that other than her getting involved with Grant. It's possible I'm not paranoid and it is plot relevant, which is why I said mostly, but I can't think of anything that points in that direction.

I like how Grants tastes are a fair bit away from blonde pneumatic perfect lady. Simone is described as chunky, unkempt, with a huge appetite. I appreciate it.

At some point Aaronovitch commented on the sex in Moon Over Soho and said that he put that in there because he didn't want Grant to be a stereotypical pining can't get laid nerd character.

There was maybe, maybe two paragraphs of lesbian BDSM in the most detached and lame "Nessa pulled Marie's hair, and then two hours later they were tired and cuddling, it was totally awesome but I'm not detailing it here" narrator description.

If that put you off, then you must have had real trouble with the super-graphic (in comparison) passages in various Dresden books where people hosed.

Hadn't reached that bit when I'd posted. I actually don't like how its handled since his parent's have previously resisted the idea he's a wizard, so his mom being 100% certain Simone is a witch is odd. Especially since she's wrong.

She's a Jazz Vampire! Not a witch. So the sex is plot relevant in that it informs why Grant works so hard to keep the vampires alive.

Fair, but a jarring 180 from the way relationships were treated in the previous book. In many ways I prefer Grant's relationship with Simone to the his hopeless pining over Beverly/Lesley, but I'm hoping Aaronovitch picks a lane and stays in it, or at least lays groundwork to explain why Grant's behavior varies so wildly. The difference between the way Grant behaved with Simone and Beverley Brook is what made me the most suspicious of Simone.

Nightingale remains consistently awesome and deserves props for his resolution of the Jazz Vampires investigation.

Looking forward to the next one.

I'm pretty sure he says something about his mother being happy about it, because she considers his new job to be "witchfinder" and that she considers that a more respectable job than "policeman".

Eh, I think we have to assume a certain amount of lost-in-translation there. His mom isn't wrong she's just . . .defining her terms differently

My favorite bit in Rivers of London is how Magic is supposed to be this big secret or something, but then it turns out that people are totally aware of it, but they want to react like it doesn't exist. Using euphemisms like "Falcon Bollocks" and other phrases when discussing it in police work, etc.

The sex scenes were short yes, but the Dom/sub relationship extended outside the bedroom. And Dresden has terrible sex scenes which I skip over but they are pretty self contained

Yeah, well, I don't see how you'd have a problem with that if you'd read the books leading up to this crossover because there is a lot of history there that makes it a bit more than merely "dom/sub" relationship stuff.

I'm keen on that one moment from the first book where Peter asks Nightingale, what's the biggest thing he's ever destroyed with a spell and Nightingale replies, "A Tiger." So Peter asks if that was when he was in India and he says, "No, it was when I was in Germany." Because he'd been talking about tanks.

Nightingale is really interesting because he's kindof presented as an analogue for everything that was cool about the British Empire: Magic James Bond Nazi Destroyer

and then he got PTSD and spent forty years hiding from the world and painting kinky pictures of his magic girlfriend instead of doing his job

I especially like that he's not technology-averse.

Yeah and I think he kind of works best as an enigma. My vague mental image of his time in WWII is probably better than anything discrete. I'd be okay with occasional metal-as-gently caress interludes, but the more that gets explained the more risk they have of turning his past into something mundane.

He wrote in his last big writing update that the series will finish in 2–4 books. He wants to keep the universe around in a form that allows him to write books outside the mainline (prequels or side stories), but the basic story will end in 4 books max, since he's feeling finished with it after 20 years writing it.

Second book, actually.

quote:

“What’s the biggest thing you’ve zapped with a fireball?” I asked.
“That would be a tiger,” said Nightingale.
“Well, don’t tell Greenpeace,” I said. “They’re an endangered species.”
“Not that sort of tiger,” said Nightingale. “A Panzerkampfwagen sechs Ausf E.”
I stared at him. “You knocked out a Tiger tank with a fireball?”
“Actually I knocked out two,” said Nightingale. “I have to admit that the first one took three shots—one to disable the tracks, one through the driver’s eye slot, and one down the commander’s hatch—brewed up rather nicely.”
“And the second Tiger?”
“I didn’t have time to be so clever with that one,” said Nightingale. “Straight frontal shot into the weak spot where the turret meets the hull. Must have caught the ammo store because it brewed up like a firework factory. The turret blew right off.”

E: And this comes right after Nightingale explains that he prefers to use fireballs rather than guns because they're easier on maintenance, concealability, and paperwork than pistols, and carry a greater/more versatile punch than any pistol he'd care to carry.
