Yeah, a "centrist" based on a hosed-up American norms right now is way different than an actual centrist. And I think it's important to divorce policies one would deem centrist from the American politicians that people astoundingly are labeling as centrist or moderate. The former can represent perfectly reasonable stances. The latter appears to be composed of a) Democrats whose policies would have placed them in the Republican party twenty five year ago and who condemn incivility toward utter horrific people as being more of a problem than those horrific people themselves, and b) Republicans who hand-wring in gross public displays but who ultimately fall on the side of the aforementioned horrific people.

So apologies if I personally grouse about centrism and conflate the two.

I don't know if the Democrats can be or even know how to be an effective opposition party anymore - they're too docile, too afraid to rock the boat and are the political embodiment of Charlie Brown trying to kick the football - "Republicans have slapped our hand away every time we've reached across the aisle over the past 10 years, but I'm sure they won't this time!"

On the other side you have the president whipping his supporters into a frenzy and calling for anyone who doesn't march in lock step with them to be locked up.

You'll excuse me if I'm seeing darkening clouds that are getting ever closer on the horizon.
