Entry 96: To Go Where No Vestal Has Gone Before Agnès met Olivia. Edea met her mother and father. Ringabel met his true identity. Each member of the party is being given a chance to separate from the adventure and live a contented, peaceful life with those they care about most. Last is Tiz. We've picked up enough hints to know exactly who we're meeting. Such a disappointment. You'd think everyone would clamor to live next to a gaping, permanently smoking hole that swallowed the previous village whole. Five star view! Tiz!? A voice similar but not quite like Egil's pipes up from nearby. We've finally found Til. Brother! It is you! Til, you survived! Til, rightfully afraid of tripping and falling into the chasm, waits for Tiz to come to him. Tiz! Til! But you died! You tried to protect me, and you... Til... I never thought I'd hear your voice again. I've been all alone since I lost you... C'mon Til, chop chop! You're already ten years old or something like that. The king entrusted you with this! Get your real estate act together! Airships came after me, and I was attacked by the strangest pair... Forgive me, Til. Forgive me for leaving you all alone. Tiz! Behind you! What now!? Nice how Til doesn't even feel its worth mentioning how he beat up Holly and Barras. I'm sure he's in no danger from whatever's attacking now. ...Nope, definitely not. After the goblin corpses are kicked into the Great Chasm, Til and Tiz resume their heartfelt reunion. Even Tiz couldn't hold onto his little brother's hand, so you Til couldn't have expected to pull up his older brother. But in a case like this, knowing the facts won't stop the "if only". I kept playing that moment over and over again in my mind. It's been eating me up inside. Til... But you're back again to save me! My big brother. My hero! Please, don't leave me ever again. We'll rebuild the village together! The king says he'll help! It might take years, but we'll have it back just the way it was! ...Right. Let's do that. ...Tiz. The sage makes his appearance, calling the party away. When did the sage find out so much about these guys, anyway? Jeez, man, I know you're a lech, but a little privacy... If you wish to stay and live here, there is now a place for you--a place where you fit in. And perhaps your brother will finally be free of the terrible memory that haunts him. A specter you yourself are all too familiar with, I'm sure. I...I wish... Your decision needn't be a rash one. Speak amongst your comrades before you decide. I will await you in Yulyana Woods. Come see me when your decision is made. The sage leaves. Tiz brings Til back to Caldisla to rest, then returns with the others to the ship. Agnès is the first to make a decision. That's right! You're the vestal of wind, Agnès! You can't end your journey here! ...And Olivia? You'd be condemning her to the same loneliness and dread you felt in the first world. The same could be said for you, Tiz. Do you intend to leave your brother all alone? ...... Well, even if you two don't stay, I think Edea should remain here with her mother and father. What about you, Ringabel? You'd lost your memory for such a long time. Now you finally have somewhere to go. People who love you. I can't stay here by myself. Alternis's grief may have struck too close to home for Ringabel. He wants to keep her out of harm's way, even if it means separating from her. Meanwhile, Edea's father may be more affectionate, but that also marks him as not the same father she grew up with. How else is he different? Does this alternate version really count as her father, and she as his daughter? It's not only that. Would it be right to abandon the journey? Turn their backs on the world's problems? Abandon Agnès at her greatest trial yet? I'll go wherever you do, Agnès. Though the world may change, you never do. Not once since that moment on the brink of the Great Chasm... We battled the Sky Knights together. Then we weathered the burning of Caldisla. I asked you to take me with you. Then we met, Edea. We stole the Eschalot and awakened the Wind Crystal in Ancheim. Then to Florem and the Sacred Flower Festival. We lost Olivia, but awakened the Water Crystal. We worked together to save Egil in Eisenberg. Remember how Agnès's face got all covered in soot? I...I hardly see how that detail is relevant now... But it was hilarious! And then there were all the fights before then, too. ...... ...... We've come this far. We have to see it through to the end. We have our answer, then? Yes! Mm-hm! Seems so. Alright, then. Let's go see the sage! The party heads straight over. Not that that's quick enough for some fairies. Jeez, Airy, this is the most anxious you've been all journey. Keep your ribbons on, it's only a small detour. May I remind you, you've been given a chance to live the rest of your lives among those you hold dear? We know! And those people are right here beside us. That the four of us met is a fate we all hold dear. That's right. And that's why we'll go on! Right. The four of us, together! Ho ho ho! Well spoken indeed. Now, last but not least, let us assess your growth so far. Our... Wait. You don't mean-- That is just what I mean. A job--a legend born one thousand eight hundred years past! That's right: We didn't do all that running around just for story. Time for a new job! It's only been -- what -- about five months since the last one. Isn't Conjurer Yulyana a cute little floaty man? Nice of him to give us a chance to opt out before kicking our teeth in. As a nice homage to FF4's Tellah, this old man sage uses Meteor to wreck the party's day. He also smacks fairly hard with his walking/spinning wheel staff, buffing his stats regularly with spells based on summons. Because he buffs before attacking, one good trick is to use dispel to make him waste a ton of turns recasting buffs. Once he's had enough, he hands over the final job! Since he created jobs this must be the best job, and in a nontraditional way it is. And you, Sage. You're quite formidable for a man of your age. Ho ho ho, yes, well, nineteen hundred years is a rather long span. Now, I must ask. What shall we do about the memories of those you encountered in the ordeals I prepared? Just how powerful is Yulyana? Why doesn't he stop the Evil One himself? I guess once you get to be over 1,000 years old, your power level is whatever is narratively convenient. ...I would ask that you leave them intact, then. Even chance meetings over in a moment can provide a spark to keep a person going. I leave it to time to claim what memories it will. That works for you, too? Fine by me. Very well, then. It shall be as you wish. Now, it's near time we parted ways. I leave the fate of the world in your hands. Sage! Do not look so sad, child. I simply go to see to a meeting I've avoided overlong. Truly...truly overlong. Now, farewell! Bye sage! Have fun being dead(?)! Ha ha, nah, he's probably just teleported to a beach resort on the coast of Florem. Now we have all the jobs. The party's made their decision. Agnès has a plan... But first, it's time to grind everything to max. For starters, Norende sells two special eggs for more efficient grinding. The story of the golden egg concerns a goose/hen who lays gold eggs. The farmers who own the bird have no idea how it works, but they guess the bird has even more gold inside, so they kill it. The goose/hen, however, has normal innards, and now that it's dead it's done laying eggs of any sort. Moral: Short-sighted greed can easily doom long-term happiness. The next step, after leveling up a bit, is getting the Conjurer ability Obliterate. When equipped, this summons a bunch of demons automatically at the start of battle to take enemies 20 levels or lower to hell. Handy! In addition to ending battles immediately, Obliterate awards full money, experience, and job points! It also awards full bonuses. It's part of the hard-earned prize for getting our murderous mitts on Yulyana's job stone. The levelling keeps going, going, going... Since all I need to do is turn the circle pad to find battles and tap the A button to get through the victory screen, it's the perfect time to watch some shows. I started watching Star Trek! It was fun and the series has held up pretty well for its age. My favorite episode so far is-- Oh. Well, what do you know? Looks like we're ready. And there's nowhere else to go. Okay, Airy. You've got your wish. We're going. The final blue chest is in Everlast Tower. 'Wonder' in this case is 'wonder what horrific way someone in the vicinity will die next'? Anyway, we're prepared and the party's made their peace. Hear that, Airy? Agnès is going to take care of the crystal now. How many crystals has it been? No, nevermind -- it doesn't really matter. None of the others mattered. We weren't doing it right. We didn't have the courage. But this time... This is the final crystal. We're going to do it right this time. Please, Agnès! We've worked so hard to save it! Don't throw it all away! Don't you care about your friends? Aren't I your friend, too? So, please, listen to me! Listen to me! I don't know how this will turn out, but I'm with Agnès to the end. Count me in, too. I won't abandon her. This is so nerve-wracking. But... I trust you, Agnès. Do what you need to do! We've found the courage to disobey. This and the next few following scenes only appear if you're breaking the crystal after Chapter 5. As they watch Agnès, the party thinks back to past events. The crystals...you mustn't... Father...! It was no small thing to drive Agnès to this. She believed in Airy and the Crystalist teachings whole-heartedly. I cannot bear to hear of matter so dreadful. For if what you say is true, then I... Forgive me. I never wished to put you in this position... But I cannot believe Ringabel would lie to me. Not about something like this. That's why-- You trust Ringabel, then? ...I do. I trust Ringabel, along with Edea, and you, too, Agnès. I trust you all. ...Very well. Then I shall trust in him, too. Thank you. True colors!? Ugh, rude! I'm-- Enough lies! I've finally remembered everything! The creature I saw slaughter Edea that day... The "Evil One"...! Yes! And that Evil One is you, Airy! She would never have believed Ringabel if it weren't for the long journey they'd taken so far. Hm hm hm... And you'd all come so far. What a waste, but oh well... All of her life has centered around the crystals. ...... I... I intend to...destroy...the crystal! That is what I must do... Is it not, Tiz? We are the guides who convey the crystals' revelations to the people. Yes, well, more simply put, a vestal is one who guides the people. But what of the crystals? It's not the crystals that are of importance. What matters is guiding people down the proper path. People are uneasy creatures. They cling to the vestls and crystals to escape their suffering. To answer the people's prayers, to vestal and crystal both--is that not a vestal's role? But care must be taken in doing so. As I said, a vestal's task is pointing out the proper path. She is not a passive conduit for the people's prayers. And the crystals are not to be seen as absolute. Such is mine and Lord DeRosso's conclusion after a thousand years observing the Orthodoxy and the crystals. Bitter decisions full of sorrow may lie ahead, Agnès. Unavoidable choices. But Tiz will be at your side, come what may. Isn't that so, Tiz? That's right! Only now, with the help of her friends, does she feel ready to turn against all that which she spent her life protecting. In addition to the former scenes, if we'd decided to break the second or third crystal of Chapter 6 instead, we'd get the following scene: Your life belongs to more than just you now! I know it's hard, but stay focused on your mission! I... Breaking the second or third crystal of this world would require a lot more guesswork and proactivity on Agnès's part -- much like she showed when Tiz and Egil were in danger outside the Temple of Fire. Everything after this point occurs in both chapters 5 and 6. ...... This is my last warning. If you don't stop now... Ngh... Stop... Aah...! Next: Hey, I think we found the bad guy! -- Event Viewer Main Scenario: A Father's Wisdom The Courage to Trust Airy's True Colors The Courage to Act on Your Own Airy's Lie An Ultimatum Sub-Scenario: Til Arrior My Hero A Decision is Made To the Conjurer Bid Farewell to Possibility D's Journal: Tiz Arrior posted:In the third world, the sage showed Tiz an alternate fate. In this world, it was Tiz's brother Til who survived. None of the village had been rebuilt, and the area teemed with monsters. At the sight of Tiz, Til rushed to embrace him. Tiz struggled over whether to stay here and rebuild the village with his brother... D's Journal: Sage Yulyana posted:The sage showed the four of us other paths our lives could take. We considered his words, came to our conclusion, and visited him once more. The sage stood before us as the conjurer, intending to test our mettle. He was a formidable opponent, but we achieved victory in the end. D's Journal: Til Arrior posted:In the third world, Sage Yulyana told Tiz that his alternate fate was to replace his counterpart here who had perished, and rebuild Norende Village together with his younger brother. This is a cool twist. I figure Airy is a lot more insufferable throughout the course of the game if you're actually playing it? The occassional screenshot in the LP doesn't really convey that she's basically Navi.

I wouldn't have minded her showing up more often in the skits to be a bratty little jerk. As is, when she does show up it's more like 'Oh, yeah, Airy exists, doesn't she?' After Chapter 4, pretty much all of her bottom screen dialogue is “guuuuuys we gotta find a cryyyystaaaal”, with her just getting more and more annoyed the longer you go between awakening another crystal. But on the other hand, she’s also unvoiced for those, at least. And ohh, I’ve been so looking forward to this upcoming portion since I found this LP.

The screen shots where she's directly talking to the player are whats happening on the upper screen every time you pause. She isn't literally saying "listen!" all the time, but for me at least she was increasingly insufferable as the story went on. As Ringabell gets better, she gets worse.

Greyarc makes a good point - the sage really knows a lot about the life of a random farm boy. Sure, Tiz and Til are connected to the great chasm which he waited for a long time to appear but getting the family tree of the only surviver is pretty eager. Not to mention last update he lured Agnés to Olivia exactly as Einheria found her. How did he know what was about to happen on the other side of the planet? Old man superpowers are pretty convenient.

It comes with the Sage package. I mean, on the List of Things Likely To Create a Protagonist, a giant sinkhole swallowing a village is up there on it. Then his Sage Powers let him transfer any research he does on this across dimensions to himself because that's how Sage's roll. Alternatively: he's a Sage, he has access to the script.

He's always known about the situation. Entry 97: Trials, Tribulations, and Treasure We found the courage to disobey. Just before Alternis/Ringabel lost his memories, he sketched two things in his journal: The first image is Airy's wing marked with the number 6. The second... Was likely the last thing he saw before losing his memories. We now know what it is. Or rather, who it is. Our dear friend Airy. Don't stop, Agnès. Destroy the crystal! I will! We'll protect you, whatever happens! Put your faith in us! I will! No problem. We'll sort this out and be back on Grandship in time for dinner. Agnès is busy, so this battle is just the other three. Hope Agnès wasn't your healer! The air...it's choked with evil. It's your old friend Airy, boy! And after all the worlds we linked as one... All the battles we fought together! You've seen too much not to understand. The world is not a singular existence. An endless array of Luxendarcs exist at once. An infinite line of worlds in parallel... That's obvious enough by now. And in piercing the walls that divide them, I've gained power. Power beyond the reckoning of mortals. Enough to bring about a grand and final end... To trigger the catastrophe! I owe you a great deal, my friends. For my power alone could not have broken the world-walls. Not without the aid of the crystals set to rampage! Then the Great Chasm... That's your doing! Please, don't be modest. Or have you forgotten your contribution? The lot of you were eager to assist. We tore that void open together. And siphoned through an army of monsters from the nether what's more. Good of Airy to confirm our worst fears: the Rite of Awakening was, in fact, the forbidden Grand Ritual. Ha ha, no wonder Eternia hated us! Of course, the onus was on DeRosso and Yulyana to connect the dots and prevent massive destruction, but they're just a couple of passive softies in their old age when it came to that latter step. You lied to us! And you made it so easy. A fine pack of puppets, you lot. Not a thought of your own, so eager to obey. Because obeying is so easy, hmm? You're never responsible when you're only following orders. And who would doubt what seems so obvious? Who bears the courage to disobey? Precious few. Not one human in a thousand. Now, my lambs, to slaughter. Slaughter? Ha, we've barely started fighti-- Uh Hm Okay then. This is an insta-kill move Airy does automatically on the third turn. Technically you can get her health down before then, but either way she won't let the party win. Agnès is strained to her limit. She's concentrating all her will on the crystal, knowing her three friends have just died to protect her. With Tiz, Edea, and Ringabel fallen, she has only seconds left. They probably died for nothing. She'll probably die for nothing. How could I...have not seen this for the beastly trap it is!? ... Grant me this prayer. If it is not too late, please, save this world... Save my friends... There is no response. Why would the crystal respond? It chimes gently, unchanging. It was hopeless from the start. The crystal won't break. Unless it does. The chiming's stopped, replaced by dead silence. As the pieces fall, the crystal's glow fades away. For the first time in thousands of years, the temple is quiet, dark, and utterly empty. What's this!? Was this right...? Mother Vestal... Olivia... Sage... So much hurt, so much suffering in my wake... Agnès gets up and runs down the stairs towards the party. And towards Airy. Things might be hopeless, but she's not going down with her back turned. She pulls off some Dragon Ball moves to hold out against Airy's first attack... But Airy, like many bizarre alien villains, isn't going down that easily. It wasn't enough. The party is dead. They failed. We failed. The search for a new vestal and warriors will hold. I need to first find a crystalline core. To come this far, and be denied for another five millennia... Rraaagh! Airy gives us an interesting detail: she knows the exact amount of time it takes a crystal to grow. That length of time also apparently means nothing to her. In the end, after all of the party's efforts, after Agnès successfully broke one of the four crystals, it was all only a temporary roadblock for the Evil One's plans. I shall bring the Dark Aurora into being and bide my time within the Great Chasm. Accursed fools! Airy then smoothly slides offscreen. *scoot scoot scoot scoot* And that's the inglorious end to our journey. Well, it was a good run. Multiple worlds, grinding like mad... Not enough. Even with Ringabel's forewarning, there was no way to prepare for Airy's power. Anyway, thanks for reading my first LP, guys! It was...something akin to fun. Shame about that ending. Pretty grim, especially for something so Final Fantasy inspired. That's what the party really could've used -- a good ol' Final Fantasy-style boost from the power of friendship. You know, kind of like: Arise... The time is come. Those who have kept me safe. Nurtured me... I now grant the power of their hopes and prayers unto you four. The power to sever the root of this darkness. Receive it now. Rise back to your feet. Yeah, that looks familiar. As the power of light increases, so does the power coming from Agnès's pendant. A second chance! Or, given Ringabel's past events, a third chance? Or... Nevermind. Am I... ...... Ah! One by one, the other Warriors of Light get to their feet. Nh... ...Hnngh. Rgh... So, a snip of background on the term Warriors of Light: Dating back to the original Final Fantasy, Warriors/Heroes of Light is commonly used to refer to series protagonists, particularly when there are bright shiny crystals/gods in need of protection from the powers of darkness/chaos/vengeful idiots. More directly, Bravely Default is the spiritual successor to a side Final Fantasy game subtitled The 4 Heroes of Light. What...what happened to us? ...I destroyed the crystal. Then Airy turned into that...thing. Didn't we all fall in battle? How are we still...? I feel as good as new. Did anyone else have a dream? I heard a voice. A gentle voice... Yes! I heard it, too! Where'd it come from? I believe it came from my pendant... From the crystalline core. Normally, destroying a crystal isn't very Warrior of Light-ey, but considering it was done in an attempt to save the world from Airy's plan and the crystal will eventually regrow... The crystal(?) obviously takes a long-term view of the situation. We still have no idea what powers the crystals are capable of. Which crystal was Agnès's pendant before it was destroyed, anyway? Are there more than four crystals per world or is it here due to dimensional adventures? The more mysteries solved, the more that appear. I remember it sounded like Agnès to me... Me? Or...the one from the world I came from... No, first things first. Airy is still out there. We have to stop her. I still cannot believe she's been deceiving us all this time... No, I wish not to believe... But we've seen her for what she is. The creature that I saw kill Edea bore that same hideous form. I'm sure of it now. The me from the previous world... If we fail to act, that fiend will find new pawns to use in awakening the crystals. The evil chain must be broken, and it's up to us to do it. Ringabel mentions his memories of the past here even if you do this in Chapter 5. Then again, it wouldn't be surprising if seeing Airy's true form jogs any missing memories. The party's soon ready to go, no worse for wear after dying a bit. We gave our all to destroy it, but seeing empty space where the crystal was doesn't feel good. This may not be the first time a crystal's been broken, but given the lack of historical records, this Luxendarc's next 5,000 years could be pretty hellish. But we've got more immediate problems. Airy's still out there. Despite breaking a crystal, the world is unchanged for the moment. If we hadn't done Yulyana's conjurer side quest yet, it'd become automatically available so long as we'd entered the Finale (broken a crystal) post-chapter 5. Also, once you break a crystal and enter the Finale, all other crystals awaken and the world acts as though the crystal you broke is awake. This means you'd have a clear ocean even if you broke or never touched this world's water crystal. You can probably interpret it all as a result of the final burst of power given off by the breaking crystal having a lasting effect on its own element and empowering the others. With all that gameplay talk out of the way: Airy is somewhere in the Great Chasm, but it might be smarter to prepare before we head over. We could use more power. Who better to help than another old, old friend? This scene is only available after Airy's revealed herself and the party's done the conjurer side quest. The sage has already deemed you worthy. 'Tis time I did the same. The forbidden arms the sage took from the Orthodoxy lie sealed away on the Kustra Archipelago. Where is this archipelago? It is an icy chain of islands north of Florem. The Sealed Cavern shall rise from a frozen crescent moon. A crescent moon? And what do you mean, the cavern will rise? We need weapons, man, not poetry! All-powerful gear from an ancient cult feared by both the Shadowdarkvampirelord and the Orthodoxy? We'll take it. I only hope they will suffice against the foe you now face. DeRosso's content to leave the actual dirty work to us, so we're off. DeRosso's hint for the Sealed Cavern location is similar to the instructions for finding Susano-O, and as it happens both are in the same region. As you might expect, the Sealed Cavern remains sealed and inaccessible until you have the aforementioned scene with DeRosso. Once we head inside: We're introduced to Bravely Default's bonus dungeon. Unlike most bonus dungeons, this won't be mind-numbingly long. It will, however, be taking up the rest of this entry. Adventurer and Fox are at the entrance to offer business and guidance. They're such good friends with Yulyana. His magic strengthens the beasts who stalk its halls. Spells of teleportation are also nullified within. If you would press on, take care... This challenge meant a lot more in the first version of this game, with mandatory random battles. Now it just means you have to spend an extra five minutes backtracking out from the bottom floor. Luckily this place is only 10 floors total, though currently only 9 are accessible (at least so far as the LP's concerned ). The dungeon's gimmick is that each floor's layout is an exact copy of a floor from some other dungeon in the game. Dimension's Hasp's second floor, for example, is a copy of Harena Ruins B2. All enemies are also repeats, albeit stronger variants. The only thing that's new is treasure, so that's what we're going to cover. There are also a few additional items in here that I'm picking up new but will cover later on. Anyway, sit back and relax, because even this abbreviated list of items'll take up some time. The idea of Yatagarasu originated in China, eventually spreading to Korean and Japanese myth. It is variously seen as a powerful and usually helpful creature representing the sun, guidance, rebirth, and the will of the gods. Dimension's Hasp B3 is modeled after Temple of Wind B1. Presumably these are all places recreated from Yulyana's memory. Also, all the new treasures here are in blue chests. Yulyana invented the asterisks, wonder if he came up with the blue chest system, too? B4 (Mount Fragmentium West)'s treasure. Where is the Sky Continent in relation to us? That's a mystery for another time. B5 is Witherwood South. With that form and color scheme I wouldn't mind sealing it right back up again, demons or not. B6 is a darker version of Florem Gardens Interior. Artemis, well-known from Greek myth for two main things: One, beating everyone who challenged her hunting skills. Two, being matron god of women's issues in general, ranging from virginity to childbirth. B7, Swordbearer Fort, ground floor. The three imperial regalia of B8 -- The Underflow 2F West, complete with disappearing floor sections. Can't say I've heard of too many gods of fists. Finally, B9 is Central Command, 48th floor sans Edea's bedroom. The mentioned god is Odin of Nordic myth, and the war was the Aesir-Vanir War, which resulted in the merging of two groups of gods, shockingly named the Aesir and the Vanir. Next: Here we come, Airy, armed and ready! -- Event Viewer Main Scenario: We'll Protect You! Grant Me This Prayer Airy Enters the Chasm Arise, Warriors of Light! Breaking the Chain Sub-Scenario: Lord DeRosso's Counsel D's Journal: Agnès Oblige posted:Agnès continued to pray, ignoring Airy's warnings. Airy then transformed into a vile monster, and we struggled desperately to protect Agnès as she kept up her chant. The crystal shattered, sending Airy's plans up in smoke. Shaking with rage, Airy slaughtered us all, but we were resurrected by the voice in the pendant. D's Journal: Airy posted:
D's Journal: Lord DeRosso posted:Betrayed by Airy after her transformation, we went to seek the advice of Lord DeRosso. The cache is apparently stashed somewhere in Kustra Archipelago, an arc-like chain of islands north of Florem. As someone who doesn't have a lot of patience for handheld games, I'm experiencing the game for the first time through this thread. All I can say about Airy's new form is

I am mildly disappointed that airy's evil form wasn't just airy as she was. I really like the notion of the great evil being a teensy, obnoxious fairy, but having her actually be a bug demon thing kind of hurt that a little.

I appreciate how Airy's ultimate move is just punching everyone a lot.

The Kusanagi is actually the only one of the Imperial regalia generally admitted by the Japanese to be a replica...the Clan Taira fleet was supposed to have it when Clan Minamoto sent them to the bottom of the sea in the 1185 Battle of Dan-no-Ura. That'd make the current Kusanagi a still-impressive 800 year old replica, if true, but, as with the allegedly original jewel and mirror, the Imperial family refuses to let any of them be carbon-dated...
