In other words, a hurricane following immediately in the wake of another cannot be as strong as the first as the first already took a lot of energy out of the ocean. So for hurricanes to be pummeling the US continuously something would have to be pumping energy back into the atlantic ocean as fast as storms are taking it out.

NHC update: Probably hitting as a Cat. 4. "Data from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Michael is now a strong category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some further strengthening is expected overnight and on Wednesday, and Michael is forecast to become a category 4 hurricane before it makes landfall in the Florida Panhandle or the Florida Big Bend area. Weakening is expected after landfall as Michael moves across the southeastern United States."

the name of a hurricane should change with intensity/projected impact like "tropical storm whirlypoo  "then it gets progressively meaner sounding so right about now it should be "hurricane zeus and poseidon simultaneously going elbow deep in your rear end with only your blood as lube" it's a mouthful but it might help those who are on the fence about evacuating
