It all sounds like hyperbole because there's no way anyone else would unleash this sort of nightmare while sitting on a funding figure quickly approaching 200 million dollars. If you manage to get through to them the exact state of things then they say "wow, what a scam" but are still not quite grasping that it's also a cult and people keep dropping $27k on jpegs even with all the knowledge of the last eight years. - hurston makes it in. it's not much bigger than any of the existing moons, and just as barren.
- performance and stability tanks.
- "performance optimization" task is listed as completed anyway
- to make up for the performance hit of hurston, one (or more) of the existing moons are removed
- they state the reason for removing the moon is because they are beginning work on a second system (hype started)
- all the new ships make it in but do not include any new gameplay mechanics
- voip / foip pushed back
- hype started on some new feature not already listed on the roadmap. somehow fans will not consider this to be scope creep.

I've been looking very closely at all the most graphically realistic and immersive games and the various RPG and FPS games don't even come close to what CIG are attempting with SC.

I want to see it get all the way there, and can't imagine how they could possibly do it (100 systems fully developed including Earth) without the help of a powerful tool like AI, which could use Google mapping along with some futuristic flourishes to make the future Earth while learning about every different type of environment using the actual Earth as an analogue. The AI could then draw from that data base in it's creations of other words and systems, while becoming ever more detailed and immersive all the way along. The hand of the artists would never be removed since there's always the matter of preference and choice in what the AI produces.

With object container streaming, the digital objects built can have encoded info for haptic feedback in the gloves along with hand motion detection (better when talking with people to be able to move ones hands and arms), and retina blurr and focal point calibration based on what you're looking at via eye motion detection. Facial and hand and body motion detection tech is coming along very quickly now.

Chris could use his Intel connections to make it happen, while hiring on a couple of very talented people in each of those two fields, folks with links to Deep Mind and Oculus.

I don't see why not.
If I were Chris and CIG, I'd want to be thinking about how to get and stay ahead of the curve but in a way by far more extraordinary even than the big vision but only dimly realized.

2025-2030 would then be filled with gaming experiences and human interaction that we can hardly comprehend.

Gaming will never be the same when someone is smart enough to create a game like SC that fully incorporates these 2 leading edge technologies.

Physics engine is a different beast since the game engine does retrieve values from it. So if you are taking 64 bit values, downgrading them to 32 bit, feeding those 32 bit values into the physics engine, pulling 32 bit values out of the physics engine, and promoting those 32 bit values back to 64 bit you are essentially losing almost all of the benefits of having 64 bit precision. You would end up with things like Kerbal Space Program's "Kraken", where things start wobbling/shifting around frame by frame. Or physics will become erratic and unpredictable.

I refuse to believe that a development team that has failed to deliver Object Container Streaming or whatever the gently caress for 2 years straight has successfully upgraded/rewritten huge chunks of a physics engine to work with 64 bit values. Physics engines are complicated - I only vaguely understand the maths and theories involved. It's not a simple "force * mass divided by acceleration" or whatever, there's crazy math that makes my eyes bleed and insane optimizations going on under the hood.

It is my opinion that if a team had been able to truly upgrade a physics engine to 64 bit and keep it performant and bug-free then something like OCS should be child's play. I know physics and networking are wildly different beasts, but the skills and expertise needed to work on or rewrite a physics engine would indicate that you are a Hot poo poo Developer.

I spoke a little bit about this on the podcast but CIG does everything manually. So the simple act of re-sizing a level or 3d assets turns into a huge task for a number of reasons:
• CIG doing things backwards, has to also wrestle with re-texturing because of course everything has been textured to meet Chris' approval
• They probably have x2-x5 more assets in one pre-alpha level than any sane developer would in a release ready level. Again cart-before-the-horse screenshot first development is a likely culprit
• Probably no tooling knowhow to resize assets outside of re-exporting the Maya/3DStudio model and editing every xml file by hand. They have nobody with actual skills beyond artistry. So of course instead of scripting a resize, they just have the army of artists re-export/import it all.

Now what would have been a simple 1 day re-size is a 1000+ hour job because you wasted weeks on polishing a demo level to look pretty.

Synthworld, a lost kernel of stupidity in the sea of turds that make up Star Citizen's tragically dumb lore:

Terraforming planets is very easy, according to Chris Roberts - so easy, in fact, that according to their lore timeline his Mary Sue company RSI (the in-universe one, not the real one you sue for a refund) invented terraforming long before humanity had even invented interstellar travel. It's so trivial that there are no domed colonies in the lore of Star Citizen - they just plop down some terraforming gizmos onto a new world whenever they feel like doing a little mining, because it's cheaper to terraform an entire planet than to drill in pressure suits.

So naturally the human empire gets bored of all this terraforming because it's too easy and decides to build a planet from whole cloth instead. The empire's plan was to create a giant secret planet in the backwater of space, build it from mineral donations from private freighters who were all somehow clueless to the big secret, and then force a shitload of people to colonize it so that it suddenly wasn't a backwater anymore. Then they'd cancel all the wars they'd started with literally every other alien species and give them the planetbuilding technology for free - on the basis that the massive resource expenditure from strip-mining real planets to make a fake one would end the need to fight each other for, uh, those very resources.

Sadly, somewhere along the way the project was scrapped because the entire empire was overthrown when a couple people started a riot at a terraforming outpost, which just goes to show that you just can't please everyone.

The only thing CIG really has to show for all this lore-writing effort is a low-resolution jpeg that looks, well, judge for yourself, but I think you can guess which movie Chris Roberts had watched that week:

In any case I'm sure you'll agree that the story of a pointless vanity project with self-defeating and contradictory goals that inevitably overran its budget and survives off a trickle of donations from private citizens bears no ironic relationship to Star Citizen whatsoever.

PederP posted:

The version of CryEngine they based everything on has a multiplayer library which is awful in many different ways - even for a map-based game with a handful of players.

They're trying to use an engine which is full of horrible abstractions, horrible architecture, horrible dataformats and all kinds of horrible - to make something it absolutely cannot do. The many hacks to make it look it might work has made everything even more horrible.

They would have to start completely from scratch designing an actual MMO architecture. It doesn't matter what hacks and band-aids hide behind their buzzword vomit. Don't try to make sense of them.

:wrong: Also, JSON and XML have absolutely no place in a game engine outside of the production pipelines. Keep those protocols and dataformats binary and beautiful. :wrong:

PederP posted:

A short effortpost/rant about why it doesn't matter what optimizations and fixes they make:

Very roughly speaking multiplayer games can be architected in one of two ways:

1. Players run a client which presents state as given by a server, but which has no authority itself. Player actions are sent to the server to be incorporated into the global state, but the client only does simulation and state tracking for gameplay reasons (dead reckoning, lag compensation, rubberbanding, preloading resources, etc.). The server has a model of the world, but an attempt is to limit or eliminate any knowledge of the nitty-gritty of the client software (animations, models, etc.).

2. Players run a client which functions by synchronizing state directly with a server and/or other players. The networked state is encapsulated inside various entities and systems - and there is little to no decoupled world state which the client has to interpret and use to build a presentation. The presentation is the state.

An example to illustrate the difference:
Player B flies his spaceship into sensor distance of Player A.

1) The clients are given "abstract" data updates - there is enough information to determine what ship model to load and where to put it, but all data is essentially decoupled from the nitty-gritty of the engine. There is no "binding", because each client is just displaying data given to it. If you wanted to, you could essentially have different clients connected: like a decouple AI server agent, a webpage showing ship positions in some system, a statistics system building hotspot data for player activity, etc.

2) Players A and B are told to spawn a new network-bound entity to represent the other player. Whenever state of A and B changes in their client software, the property updates are sent to the server which forwards them to the other client. This has the advantage that no special protocols need to made, no special simulation needs to run on the server, and you can use a modified client as the server. You can go full peer-to-peer or you can have a server mediator to sanity check and prevent cheating. But you have a challenge in determining synchronization granularity and frequency. It's also much harder to have NPCs and non-trivial AI actors with this approach.

MMOs should never pick option 2. It doesn't matter if they implement fantastic Bind Culling, OCS, Serialized Variables, etc. The approach is anathema to an MMO with a persistent world, a high PC/NPC actor count and massive scale.

They're building the state synchronization into the completely wrong layers.
And they're not the first or last to do this. Most game engines have a basic multiplayer game implementation with state synchronization because it's relatively easy to create, doesn't involve maintaining dedicated server software and is agnostic to the genre of the game.

You can build impressive prototypes (and some very specific types of games) with a state synchronization architecture - but if you're doing an MMO, you need to scrap that thing and build server software which is (at least in principle) engine agnostic. CIG never took this step.

If you're backing a crowdfunded MMO the #2 thing you need to look at to see if it's viable (#1 is the presence of known scam artists) - is whether they're building proper servers. It's much less important what engine they're using than whether they're able to build a custom server architecture - and are doing so early on.

To sum up: it doesn't matter how much they optimize the CryEngine network engine. It doesn't even help if they rip it out completely and rewrite it from scratch. The only way for them to deliver an MMO is to start making MMO servers. But that cannot be retrofitted into their current codebase, and would probably require throwing away the majority of it.

Zaphod42 posted:

Yep. The architecture is simply wrong, and the people doing work are working at too low a level on one component to see that it won't really work all put together, at scale.

They need someone at the top with the foresight and/or experience to say, "hey, this is the wrong approach, stop that and I'll design a better architecture and then you can build components for that design"

But the people at the top are all incompetent, so they just tell the low level developers to keep hammering away because evetually enough brute force will just make it happen, right?

Every day CIG actually digs itself deeper into a neverending pit of tech debt.

They are like 200 million dollars in debt to the code bank.

Someone said before that CIG have less than nothing, a new game starting today would be better off than SC is. And that's absolutely true.

Lots of keyboard jockeys on this page that don't understand game development. Look, this is how it is: you make a ship, and if you have fidelity, then it's a ship in game. Do you follow so far? OK, so you have a ship, and fidelity, then you put in struts and rivets. Sometimes you take out a seat. And then the wings move, and there's smoke and dust somehow on a space deck in a vacuum, forget all that because fidelity and immersion. So far we're making a game, do you see? Then you put in more art assets. Sometimes you render a high resolution tongue and eyelashes and shoelaces - when you do that, that's how an FPS becomes more lethal and the gameplay flows from that fidelity.

Then you make more art, and you put the spaceman and his eyelashes next to the ship and its struts. Then, take the spaceman that's next to his ship, and you put him in his ship. This is fidelity, and it is also immersion, and you see now a little more about how we're making a space game.

Because now we have pipelines.

Then you make asteroids, shotguns, and watermelons. You make this high fidelity, and that makes the game work. Now there are lasers and missiles, and these things work in a game because the artist made them with lots of polygons. Those polygons translate directly into orbits and day/night cycles and planets.

Once the artists are done with all of that, then you have cities, sandworms, and tanks. Then physics happens.

This all comes into play because you're making sure your artists are rendering the leather jackets enough times. The higher the fidelity, the more immersion the game has, which translates directly to fun and also incidentally makes everything work in tandem.

Also there are space battles. They happen because we already drew spaceships, missiles, and lasers, not to mention the commando, so all the parts are in play and then the game is nearly done. The flight model is basically when your commandos hand moves the stick - that's what makes the ship fly - and you see that it was obvious all along. Pulling the trigger fires the gun, you see? That's what game development is. That's what you're all getting wrong.

I don't want to be that guy, but after seeing FOIP in action I now think we must now also get BOIP in the future

Body Over IP (BOIP). It sounds better than Arms Over IP and less creepy than Hands Over IP. Simply, with all that will be coming through our face with FOIP it would be almost a crime to have our characters arms hanging lifelessly at our sides.

Just think about it. How many of us usually gesticulate frantically while talking? How do I give a properly Shakespearean speech or mission briefing with my limbs dangling aimlessly? How do I fulfill my lifelong dream of being a lounge singer on a Phoenix if I cannot pantomime tickling those ivories? How do we throw up the horns? How do I drunkenly slosh my glass around in a bar? How do I streak through Arc Corp doing the Funky Chicken? How does the game algorithmically see only our middle fingers are extended and apply a blur effect to our hands like we're being censored in prime-time?

So let us have a two camera solution - one doing close focus on our face and a lower res / slower update one out a distance watching our arms - or utilize a Leap Motion, VR motion controllers...something . The number of track points needed would be surprisingly low - relative elbow position, wrist position and rotation, finger joint (x10), finger tip (x10), finger splay. When your arms are down on M+KB (or other device) or your character is holding equipment, you would disable BOIP.

It may not be the matching FOIP feature we need, but it is the feature we deserve. Along with FOIP, BOIP would add a tremendous range of streaming/video opportunities and social benefits. (and yes, a wee bit of trolling)

Both of those sentiments portray the beginnings of a desperation that now you see in full bloom in SOTA or Pathfinder Online. The remaining "believers" realize that they'll never get the game that they dreamed of, but they want any small crumb of it they can get. But, since they're obviously not going to get their dream game, they're obviously not going to put any more of money forward, so the key is to get other peoples money to prop up the project.

And that's why I think even among the remaining Star Citizen "faithful", most have actually lost their faith. Every refund represents fewer salvaged crumbs of their dream game, so of course refunds being denied should be celebrated. To fit it into your analogy, the faithful still strapped in fully realize they're in a flaming wreck at this point, but they're hoping that if someone (else) changes a tire or... something, they'll at least get part way to where they were going.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Re)moving All Ships - 2018.10.03
As part of our ongoing optimization process, the StarCitizen Tracker team has decided to make some changes to the main page layout. These changes are intended to improve the readability of the main page and reduce extraneous information.

Whereas StarCitizen Tracker is primarily concerned with an accurate and concise overview of gameplay expectations, information regarding the completion of simple assets will be displayed less prominently starting today.

The first and primary change will be to move information regarding ships off the main page and onto starcitizentracker.github.io/ships. Other assets may follow in due course such as planetary systems. Information regarding ships and their playable status is often better served by several other great fansites in any case. starcitizen.tools/Category:Ships stands out in our mind.

With regards to these changes, careful consideration is being taken in cases where assets have specific features related to it. For example, if certain ships are closely linked to in-game features (such as "Data transportation" or "Refuelling") then those features will be listed on the main page individually so as not to affect the ease of use and completeness.

A reminder, StarCitizen Tracker is a crowdsourced project so if you spot any errors or have a suggestion, please submit them. We do get regular messages when new ships are introduced or become flyable, but unfortunately, feedback regarding new features and updated elements has been less forthcoming. Your assistance in this matter will allow us to continually improve and refine the site experience and is greatly appreciated.

-Signed, the StarCitizen Tracker team

We need handshake gameplay. For example, walking to an NPC, if you handshake emote, based on their current emotional state, they may accept or refuse. For example, more likely to accept in a bar, but less likely to accept in a prison cell, or while working.

Successful handshakes raise your personal rep with NPC. After a certain point, they will accept handshakes always, and also nod or wave when you walk by. At this point, they no longer raise rep when you handshake them, though repeated handshakes will annoy and drop rep. You can continue to raise rep by buying individual drinks, or bringing them gifts, or buying their wares.

At a certain point, you unlock hugs. Hugging the individual raises your rep with the NPCs allies who are present to witness the hug. This can help repair damaged reps, as well as unlock rep building with secretive groups, gangs, or security guards for a building. But be careful, hugging mobsters in front of police or journalists can lower your rep with lawfuls.

Star Citizen is a game hovering on the margins of vaporware, its scope bloated by a $150m+ crowdfunding haul, creator Chris Roberts' lack of creative discipline, and an enabling fanbase. I've often thought that the survival-minded CIG employees probably keep a "Chris" folder handy with some flashy-looking but utterly meaningless bullshit, just in case he ever shows up at the office and wanders past their desk demanding to see what they're working on. Just a little something that can be shown off in under four minutes, preferably involving some kind of animation, with some obvious visuals for him to demand changes to so that he can get his micromanaging on and then walk away instead of sticking around to sweat and yell at them for an hour.

I also suspect that everyone there has spent time thinking about and practicing excuses for why whatever they're working on doesn't actually work and definitely won't be working anytime soon, probably by throwing someone else under the bus "I'm just waiting on _____ to finish ____, and then we can get right to work on ____!"

I can't imagine how else they'd survive a meeting there, it must be like walking into a circle of sharp (over-detailed and stupidly-designed) knives.

PederP posted:

Remember that many backers don't want a game full of fake and gamey things - they want a world. As I mentioned before they're very much like the Man in Black from West World. They want to believe CIG is building something real - they need the absurd and unrealistic promises - and ironically their insane need to have something real makes them more susceptible than anyone when it comes to the Potemkin village. They are convinced there is a huge amount of future potential and revolutionary tech under the hood.

They'd rather have a lovely fake game while being told there's actually a Matrix-in-the-making under the hood - than a good actual game which has fake things under the hood. I guess to some degree it's preferable that this does not at all presents a playable experience.

They don't need it to be fun or functional - they need it to be real. It's easy for them to forgive the jank, the bugs and the drudgery - because these are the birth pains of revolutionary tech, not just a mere game with issues.

This bring me to the second, and more fun, kind of irony in all this: The incompetence and ignorance of Chris Roberts (esp. when it comes to understanding anything about how modern games work) fits PERFECTLY with this need. He thinks everything is real and simulated - EXACTLY what these people want to hear.

Example: CR hears that CryEngine has a component damage system - and he immediately concludes that every vehicle/ship has actual components with realistic physics and damage states. Look at the CryEngine docs and read/listen to his design rants on the subject - it's hilarious to see them side-by-side.

I've seen this same kind of weird success-through-ignorance many times before in the corporate world. Some shmuck who doesn't understand tech presents a garbled and unrealistic version of reality to someone with money and a need to have this wildly unrealistic thing. How the story goes from there varies quite a lot - but usually the ones paying the bill accept the disappointment or simply forget about it all - and move on to something else. The shmuck makes a lot of money, and nothing good or durable was created.

Heck, it's even like politics, where dumb idiots who don't understand the nuances of what they're talking about tend to get elected, because they're much more convincing when they're not actually lying - as the ones with nuanced and complicated views of the world and what's possible are just annoying to voters who want poo poo fixed and preferably with no risk or cost on a personal level - and to journalists who want to hit the lowest common denominator. Compromise, nuance, uncertainty, trade-offs and complexity is annoying - bring on the idiot demagogue.

Star Citizen is just yet another example of how messed up the human psyche is, and how easily people can make really bad judgements under the right circumstances.

The Star Citizen community is a combination of a modern tech cult that idolizes technical progress without any understanding of its realities and limitations, in the vein of crypto currency idiots, tech startup fetishists and multi-level marketing scams, and more traditional religious cults. Chris and CIG have secret knowledge and abilities that will bring forth unprecedented groundbreaking innovations that will not only form the most disruptive and popular video game ever, but deliver them into a Matrix like simulation of life in space without boundaries, in which they can leave behind all of their real world failings and social isolation and become powerful and respected space men living lives of adventure and fulfillment... and trains lots of trains.

Is this how these people see themselves? It's no wonder they had a stroke when EVE chewed them up and spit them out. They seem to believe that by paying Chris enough money, they'd be buying the status their abilities couldn't earn them. I hope some game comes out of this so they can be administered a reality suppository a second time.

Backers literally don't give a poo poo what they get at this point. It could go through 19 more iterations until it becomes The Beavis and Butthead Experience vol. 2 and they will applaud it because CIG will have released something and that proves the haters wrong. That's literally the only thing they have left in their lives at this point. They're even naming their unfortunate, likely doomed children after Chris Roberts' random dumb names of poo poo in his non-game. They'll take poo poo and smile about it.

Take that, haters!

Store Citizr: We all clip together
(to the tune of Warframe | We All Lift Together)

[Intro]
*whistling, then humming*

[Verse 1]
Pshh, the air in elevator cycling
Pfft, the nipple jets start firing
Parp, to keep the goons from coming
Feel the weight of what Chris owes

This, the song of sons and daughters
Hide, the bills of what we pledged
Throwing cash at our monitors
Strong, united, backing 'til we fall

Pshh, the air in elevator cycling
Pfft, the nipple jets start firing
Parp, to keep the goons from coming
Feel the weight of what Chris owes

This, the song of sons and daughters
Hide, the bills of what we pledged
Throwing cash at our monitors
Strong, united, backing 'til we fall

[Chorus]
And we all clip, and we're all adrift
Together, together
Through the closed doors (and the floors), 'til we're lifeless
Together, together

God, I knew those faces were reminding me of something. It's like the faces in Tigtone but more horrifying.

Who said video games aren't art? This speaks to my existential dread more than any post-modern exhibit ever has.
