Yeah, you can play with the joy-con controllers in TV mode but I don't know if that's any better. Why they didn't think to implement normal controls for this is beyond me (in fact, that's the whole reason I was interested in the Switch version to begin with). I quit and deleted the game after the first 5 minutes or so.

But yeah, if you want to play this game I'd reccomend just tracking down the DS version (the mobile version might be ok too).

Implementing joystick and button controls for TWEWY seems like it'd require some big changes to the game. The combat is 100% designed for a touch screen.

I have some complaints about how the controls are handled in the Switch version and it's mostly things that are different from the DS version.

Not played TWEWY on mobile so can't compare to that version.
I've only put one hour into TWEWY Switch so I can't give a full and fair comparison but I'd say the DS version simply controls better.
Motion controls are extremely difficult, you simply can't use the slashing pins with any kind of speed or consistency. On touch control, using your non-dominant hand to hold it like a cradle and then your dominant hand as a stylus is passable, but it's not perfect and I'd be concerned for my posture after a while because it's not easy to do that and be fully comfortable on the neck and arms.

I'd say wait for a sale if curious, maybe jump in if you really loved TWEWY. Skip entirely if you only ever want to play docked. If a sequel comes out, I imagine it'd be made with a pro controller in mind.

So the DS original version is still definitive? I’ve wanted to play this game for awhile.

The Switch version adds some extra content (which I haven't seen yet, so no idea if that is worth it), but the combat is way better on DS. The touch screen combat feels clunky without the stylus, and losing the dual screen simultaneous combat with your partner makes it a lot less interesting. Still a good game and totally playable, but from what I've seen so far the DS version is still the definitive one.

the switch version runs at 30fps instead of 60 for some baffling reason but it runs perfectly and it's not really the kind of game I care about if it's 30fps. Looks and runs fine, same fantastic game. Just make sure to bump up the gamma because for some reason the default setting makes the game WAY too dark.

I've never played the mobile version so I can't comment and it might be due to the larger screen or the fact I still had the joycons attached to the sides but I found the touch controls on the Switch to be super awkward when just using my finger. Your mileage may vary of course.

Yeah I always avoided the mobile version for that very reason and was hoping they might find a way to improve the Switch version since there are buttons that could've been used for something in addition like the DS version. But it sounds like nothing was changed.

That said each game has something unique, so going back and at least unlocking the post game and seeing how the earlier games were setup can be fun. Start with the newest Disgaea and work your way backwards.

If there isn't a way to speed up animations emulating the PS2 copies and unlocking the FPS so you can play at 400% speed is likely going to be the best way to enjoy the game. Disgaea attack animations are really long. They are nice the first few times but I'm so glad newer games have an automatically skip animations I've seen option.

It's a modern touch screen that will require a special pen. It is not a pressure based screen like the DS and WiiU.

You can use a hotdog if you want a DIY solution but that's just gross.
