I had some loving weird experiences as a Girl On The Internet over my online gaming life. If I had any interest in the game anymore, I'd still avoid the poo poo out of it on first glance of the community. Shitheads like that are ignorable if you have a group of non-assholes to team up on them with, but Star Citizen is just a pit of toxic ooze. It's like they're ALL that guy in Ultima Online who was RPing a vampire and asked 14-year-old me I was on my period, except I'm not surrounded by people who then go "what the gently caress is your problem?? I'm calling the guildmaster, everyone just keep murdering him until we can kick him out or he leaves, gently caress that guy."

...

gently caress, I haven't thought about that weirdo in ages.

That time is about the time I pretty much stopped playing all multiplayer games for the most part too. :)

I know things have gotten better since then, and there's a much bigger presence of women out there to back you up, but I just don't really care anymore either. I've got enough creepy stories and weird situations that made me feel uncomfortable to fill up any voids I have about seriously trying to play any more games like that.

Maybe drop-in-drop out hi-see ya games where you don't have time to try to build up these relationships or feel obligated to try to, but definitely nothing serious again for me (unless literally The Matrix is created with Star Citizen of course!).

Sorry, by ships I mean actual real ships. Not fruity space ships. It has plenty of quasi silly space ships. But also because it's a game about space ships and flying in the void of space you spend lots of time on the ground doing ground stuff as talking to people and lots of riding on trains.

I'm actually not even sure if "fix space" is even on the roadmap anymore. :trustme:

You know I think I just realized that despite all the sq 42 trailers out there, you don't actually know who your character is.

It's like if they made a Tomb Raider trailer and Lara was nowhere to be found. Or Uncharted without Nathan Drake.

Even stuff like Mass Effect had the visage of Shepherd in various places despite that character being totally customizable.

RTS games can get away with this because for them the game is not about "you" as anything more than maybe some nameless Commander leading troops or something.

But for a game where it seems like they are putting so much effort into the story, you have no clue who the main character is or what your role will be in the story.

Even the old WC trailers featured Mark Hamill as the character you would play as.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? :)

Well I know Chris didn't, but it kind of indicates that the script's not settled down at all.

Normally if you have a story mostly completed the major characters have acquired distinctive personalities and (ideally) done something significant during the story itself, so at that point you'd have some interesting characters and concrete events you could show off in a trailer? And you'd naturally want to do so because you and your proofreaders actually went "hey this part is really good" while going over your drafts, you know what's interesting because you wrote something that was interesting. Even if you don't proofread, at least you personally would like certain specific events or find something interesting in one of your characters that you find yourself focusing on.

Which gives me the feeling Chris hasn't really written about his characters as people :psyduck:??? At best he's just saying what he wants them to have done, like "The General made an inspiring speech, then he led a fleet to fight the evil guys". No actually describing what's happening, which would then create justification for the labels he's randomly slapping on what appear to be Poser models. This is also probably why every single clip of these trailers is "action happening in vague location in unclear context" and "dramatic-sounding dialogue with no context".

I just think that so little of Squadron 42 has ever been locked down, from the gameplay to the script. You can see the hand of Chris in how they are redoing all of the characters and animations, and constantly shooting even more mocaping. Chris wants to one-up every single player game on the market, and as his game languishes in development hell, more games hit the market every year and his list of things he wants in the game and done better than someone else continues to grow.

We've yet to see anything of the real plot, other than generic late Roman Empire meets WWII in space crap. I don't think there has ever been an actual firm script and who the player character is has probably gone through dozens of changes. I think the intention was a silent-ish protagonist type for you to project yourself on, since that was all the rage back in 2012. Now its probably shifted to a fully voiced protagonist with dialogue options and character customization which is in vogue now. But again none of it is even close to done, there was no gameplay, no talk of what gameplay might be like, no plot details and of course not even a tentative release date. There is shockingly little we know for this 4 year late game.

The thing that gets me is that it's not clear who the Important Admiral is. He's a plot-integral character that's been in the script for at least three years, and beyond a leaked script just saying "this guy is supposed to be Space Colonel Kurtz" he has no characterization whatsoever.
