Why bother with that when they can just claim that one of the contributors to any page they shut down once shook hands with a person who'd been to Moscow in the past year? Liberals would just nod along without questioning it.

Let's also not forget the Burkina Faso reforestation program, which was so good that NGOs tried to keep it going across the Sahel even after they killed Sankara.

The Communist wunderkind Valentin Konovalov should already be Siberia’s youngest governor, but the elections he’s supposed to win are cancelled every other week.

The virtually unknown 30-year-old rode a wave of protest to win a first-round ballot in Khakassia, a republic in eastern Siberia, last month. The results were an embarrassment for the ruling United Russia party and the Kremlin, which backed the incumbent. But his opponents have found an easy way to keep him from winning the run-off: don’t hold it.

“It’s absurd,” said the candidate, who names Lenin as a political inspiration, over a cup of tea. So far, two of Konovalov’s opponents have dropped out, delaying the vote by two weeks each, and now an elections commission claims he misfiled his paperwork. Konovalov is likely to be disqualified

part of this is because the Communists are sort of okay with being complacent opposition until Putin retires. But they are far more likely to proceed him than the liberals. The western media narrative is completely invalid.

No one said communists are inherently woke when it comes to environmentalism, especially back in the mid-20th when it hadn't caught on that pollution could actually threaten modern civilization. China is serious now but look how disgusting it became before they realized they had to act. It's also worth pointing out that those "eastern european commies" had to rebuild entire countries from scratch after they were razed to the ground by fascist vipers. Kind of a special case.

The point is they're in a unique position to correct the past mistakes because they don't care about profit.

IDK where this is coming from because there aren't citations, but I found reporting on China's forests from 2016. Apparently they're still actively cutting down forests, but they're replanting rubber trees, so uhhh totally fine I guess. But more importantly, reforestation initiatives haven't actually affected lumber consumption--they're just importing more lumber from South America and SE Asia (including a lot of illegally cut lumber. AFAIK, China hasn't agreed to any treaties banning the import of illegally harvested lumber yet, but maybe they'll consider it?)

Cuban forestry seems more advanced than China, but both are ahead of the US where they are actively reversing protections to allow logging in virgin forests. China and Cuba are both far less developed than the US, and giving land over to forests is more costly for them.

https://wilderness.org/press-release/deadline-looms-tell-trump-administration-maintain-forest-protections

quote:

The public has until Monday, Oct. 15 to tell Secretary Perdue to maintain protections on millions of the United States’ most wild, pristine national forestlands.

The state of Alaska entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to review whether The Last Frontier should be exempt from the federal ‘Roadless Rule,’ which was signed by President Clinton in 2001 and protects nearly 60 million acres of national forests nationwide from destructive logging and road-building.

At stake are 9 million acres in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, the country’s largest national forest, and which contains portions of the largest intact temperate rainforest in North America. Exempting such a significant portion of the nation’s roadless areas would render the federal rule essentially moot and serve as a green light to other states also interested in exemptions from the federal rule.

It's not just Orwell and Arendt, but the essay does indeed own.

Orwell's contribution is more conceptual than theoretical, because his fiction imagined a hysterical endgame to communist despostism that never panned out in real life - but it's still what people think will happen the moment we socialize healthcare or whatever.

What appears to characterize [revisionist] practice above all? A certain hostility to "theory."
