nah it's multiverse theory. You're trunks from dbz with a one way only time machine. So veronica is dead forever in another timeline and i didn't lie. but man it's so nice to have see her alive again and it's heartwarming hearing her scream WOOOOHOOOOOO as she nukes everything :unsmith:

im glad they confirmed at the end yes, this is what happened, demonstration and all. it makes all that you worked for in act 2 mean something while at the same time making act 3 incredibly satisfying

agreed on veronica though, also when I got my levels back why did she start at 65 holy hell

I guess it's maybe set at 1 level lower than the main character(I was 66, the other slackers were around 63-64) but still

i wouldn’t just be surprised if the game just keeps invisibly leveling the characters and she levels slightly faster, Dragon Quest is weird/cool in that no two party members need the exact amounts of experience to level up

it's the sacrifice you make to achieve your happy ending. You may get a full party again, but your buds you saved the world with in act 2 will never see you again and will spend the rest of their days praying you succeeded instead of losing veronica again or getting straight up time-fragged. It sucks but it's good imo because otherwise it would cheapen everything about act 2

I mostly just feel bad for timeline 1 Gemma, when last you see her she's like "i'll wait as long as it takes" and *TUGS COLLAR* uhhhhh about that

this is most likely what happened, there's just a pretty severe cap from act 1 to act 2(except for Serena) so I was expecting her to be like mid-50s at best

It’s very straightforward and uncomplicated but incredibly well told, with some legit twists and turns here and there. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never made a single good post, but I still post a lot here because the game impacted me and left a lasting impression on me mostly through its story and characters.

RareAcumen posted:

Mmmm, okay, fair enough. Okay so my next question

Act 3 Oh god what do I do? I need direction badly. I just- stubbornly- forced my way through the Lonalulu Merking boss fight and that was a nightmare on all accounts. Everyone ranges from level 57 to 55 right now. I don't think I can finish the Wheel of Harma either at this point.

There's actually a pretty easy way to very quickly grind out levels. I found this out when I got frustrated banging my head against the Malicious Boreal Serpent. I died so many times on that fight when my levels were in the mid-50s, I got sick of it and decided to grind levels, and while searching for the best place to grind I found this strategy. I don't know if this has been posted earlier in this thread (because I can't be arsed to check), but it involves very specific use of pep powers and requires 1 pep pip per run, so if you don't have any pep pips you'll either need to do some of the quests that give them or buy them from the Octagonia casino or l'Academie once you've turned in 115 mini medals.

So here's how it works. You'll need the Pep powers Hallelujah (Hero, Jade, Erik), Electro Light (Hero, Jade, Sylvando), and Dirge of Dundrasil (Rab only, but requires Hero in party). I don't know what skills are required to unlock these abilities honestly, but I had them all by the time I was around your level so you probably have them, too. You'll also need Erik's Critical Claim ability from the Guile branch, and Jade's Lightning Thrust from spears. Hendrik's Hatchet Man from axes and Serena's Thunder Thrust from spears may also be useful, but probably not necessary.

So, first you make a party of Erik, Rab, Jade, and Sylvando, then get into a fight with some dinky monsters (I did this in Heliodor Region in Act 3). Then just spam defend, and as they each pep up, swap them out. Once all four are pepped up, have the hero use Pep Up, then end the battle (killing or fleeing, doesn't matter which). Then, save.

Next, change your party to Hero, Erik, Jade, Sylvando, and make sure Sylvando has a Pep Pip in his inventory. Get into any random fight, and have the first person up use Hallelujah to increase your XP gain. Usually it'll be Jade who comes up first. For the rest of the turn, swap Erik for Rab, have the Hero use Pep Up, and then have Sylvando use the Pep Pip on Jade.

When the next turn rolls around, use Electro Light. This will convert the enemies into rare monsters, usually metal slime variants. If you don't get metal slimes, exit the battle and restart from your save and try again. Swap Sylvando for Erik, defend with the Hero (since he'll usually come up next), and have Rab use the Dirge of Dundrasil Pep Power to put them slimes to sleep. It won't always put them all to sleep, and if any of them flee, it's usually worth it to reload and try again.

Next, use Critical Claim and Lightning Thrust to kill the slimes. Critical abilities will kill them in one hit, so you can also swap in Serena or Hendrik for their abilities if you want, but in my experience Erik and Jade could take care of them in two turns. When you're done killing them, you'll get 350k to around 1000000 xp depending on what your level is (the higher your level, the tougher the metal slimes that are summoned). It should result in your whole party gaining between 3 and 7 levels each. Additionally, once you're over level 70, one of the slimes will be a Metal King Slime, who will drop a Pep Pip, recouping the one you used. Repeat until 99.

I've never found a good use for Rab, in act3. He is basically a compromise between Serena and Veronica but not really that great compared to either. Veronica is obviously the best offensive caster with spell-echo, and Serena heals way more and gets omniheal. Rab and Sylv on harder monsters get's one-shot a lot even in his end-game armor whereas Veronica doesn't anymore with her end-game armor.

Now that I have Sylv's Chivalry tree unlocked I may try replacing Serena with him and have him either heal, or use Ladies First to give Veronica additional chances to wreck poo poo, but I'm worried about the lack of Kabuff and the fact that his healing isn't nearly as good.

What quest is that for Rab, so I make sure not to miss it?

Also, anyone know a list of the skills in the character builder that give you some skill seeds or points after getting it? I've seen it mentioned, but haven't found it.

And love the game by the way, DQ 11 rocks! I'm still in act 1 I think, about 45 hours played, just did Valor, 7 people in the crew etc.

So for Rab the quest is in Angri-La in Part 3. You can’t miss it and the quest log even says that’s the reward.

Skill point boosts

Erik: Agility +30
Sylvando: Charm +40
Those are what you can get in Act 1. All characters get their skill point boost through a stat-up in a personal tree but some might need to wait all the way until Act 3.

e: for the Luminary go for his big Charm boost panel he gets in Act 2, everyone else I’m categorizing as spoilers

Oh trust me. I know all about how amazing Sylvando is. I just hit Gondola? for the first time to catch his boat, and he's already one of the best characters I've seen in a game in awhile.

I hope I'm not in Act 2 already if that's what people are talking about!

Hoping the Gondola segment is a bit longer then just "get on the boat.". I've been treating this as basically watching a season of Dragonball, and have been leaving in the next stage every time. So far it's worked just fine, but I played a little bit longer today and went from starting the Gallopolis stuff all the way to the Gondola intro. Would be a bit sad if this next "episode" is me catching a boat, especially because Gondola seems like it's got some cool stuff going on in the background.

Much thanks! And no worries there, I had already heard about the thing there.

On Act 3, just to be honest, I don't currently plan to do it, at least not much, may give it a try though. Usually not a post-game guy, I tend to just look up postgame stuff online after. It being harder and also being kind of an extra with re-used areas etc, I'm usually ready to wrap it up and play another game by that point. It's cool that it's an option though, and I gather for this game it'll have more story content than your average post-game.

The higher tier horse races are the biggest loving load of poo poo I hate it

Josuke Higashikata
Mar 7, 2013

They're not actually races, they're time trials so you don't actually need to think about winning the race, just beating the clock. I think Black Cup difficult is something like 1:04:50 to win. Once you enter it it with that mindset that you only need to beat the clock, I think that helps.
Though they're not "races", you do need to bear in mind that collision is on with the other horses.

As for beating the Black Cup difficult, the ramps are kind of bait, it's much more important to hold a good racing line in the inside of the curves and hitting green winds when you can. The ramps on the finish straight are worth hitting though. Also when you're in the snaking curves bit, try to move in a straight line through them all.
If you hold the inside of corners as much as you can, you'll probably get the feeling you can win it before long and then it's just finessing.
