On the other hand, my current corporate gig is cushy and steady, and I’m looking at a “market adjustment” in a few months.

I’ve never been in this spot. Other than the obvious interview-ey stuff, what should I look for when them asking them about the role they are trying to poach me for?

Biggest thing: did you like those bosses? Would you be working directly under them? People don’t work for their company, they work for their managers. A stressful office can be less stressful than a cushy one if you have a good manager protecting you.

Right now I manage 3 people; a business systems type role (mostly does SQL and automation stuff for business needs), an SAP tech, and a helpdesk tech. My helpdesk tech is very much into the whole infrastructure side of the industry, and I'm starting to assign them more advanced tasks. They handled our file server migration and are now implementing that DFS-N thing y'all told me about last week. We have tons of projects going on at any give time, so it'd be nice to be able to move my helpdesk tech into a dedicated IT infrastructure management role (migrate our old systems, get our stuff in real working order, etc), have my SAP tech and my SQL tech stay where they are, and have a new helpdesk tech come in to get up to speed and cover that. It'll give me some freedom from being in the weeds on projects. I like IT projects don't get me wrong, but when I'm trying to manage the department and have to spend a large part of my week working on projects directly it becomes hard to keep up. I'm excited.

TL;DR: Any tips on not being toxic in IT?

It was recently brought to my attention that the tone I convey isn't always particularly nice or welcoming. It's not really my intention, but it's also not that surprising. It's not the first time in my life I've heard I need to work on tone.

I'm also not particularly great when working with people I believe to be wrong or that don't seem to know their job particularly well.

I don't believe these traits are going to be beneficial to my career long-term, and I'm sure the people around me don't particularly enjoy them either, but I'm not really even sure how to start on correcting these issues.

Has anyone else dealt with this? How have you improved?

To some extent it seems like what Linus is currently trying to address, though I'd argue I'm not quite that bad. (Nor am I so successful) Has he written anything about what he's doing since the original announcement?
Have you watched Sorry to Bother You? You need a White Voice. I don't know how to develop it, exactly, but think of it as a switch that goes off in your head when dealing with users, that basically turns on "Customer Service Mode." Make small talk, be understanding, and lack judgment; their incompetence isn't your problem, its their supervisor's problem, let them deal with it.

I have all the patience in the world for users. They can be exasperating but it’s my job to help them. I wind up being short with other people in IT, especially the so-called application administrators who are basically level 1 support for the apps and expect us (the sysadmins) to maintain their applications for them.

We are in seafood; I think that skill set is pretty much useful anywhere. From supply chain traceability to financial analysis to cost of goods shipped,, having someone who can really dig into databases and identify what needs to be where and how to marry seemingly disparate data points together into something meaningful in an automated fashion is something any company could use

I recall one time, the dude next door needed a print cartridge, he asked me because the admin person that works for him, usually takes care of it, was off at the time.

I said, IT don't do print cartridges, just ask stores for whatever you need and they will bring it round
"for fucks sake angry armadillo will you just sort out the loving print cartridge"
... in front of 4 colleagues.
My response at the time was just Dude I suggest you leave my office now.

I waited until everyone was out and told him never to even think about speaking to me like that again and he squirmed a bit which was amusing.

I've since moved out of that office (partially because things like this tend to happen), I have discovered 3 people have been investigated for potential disciplinary since I've been gone as they all threatened to fight this dude for one reason or another, but I think they all got a warning along the lines of "we can't tolerate threats of violence at work, but, well, erm, it seems you were provoked so we have to factor that in."

No one will tell me what they are saying to the dude about it but I presume someone has had a word :D

I once had the COO of my org have me come to a meeting they were in to fix an issue. As I worked on it I let them know quietly I would have to close their outlook. They then loudly interrupted the meeting to turn to me and said “wow that’s completely loving unacceptable can’t you just do your job” which caused multiple other members of management to stare at this going on. at the time IT reported to the COO.

I just left the thing where it was, walked into the CEO’s office, and told them to transfer management of IT to the CFO or I was quitting on the spot. I have no patience for being treated like poo poo. Our CEO is always super nice about everything even if it’s a frustrating situation, and even if people are mad I don’t tolerate a public call out for doing what I need to solve an issue. Multiple senior management folks came to me after and were like “what the gently caress was that about”

Yeah at the time I was too scared of losing my job so instead of walking directly to HR or telling my boss to never speak to me like that again, I spent the next hour letting him vent over whatever completely inconsequential thing he had blown up over. I spent a lot of time agonizing over whether I should go to HR over all his lovely behavior, but in the end I jumped ship to get away from him.

The evironment at my new job is great, and I feel confident that I now could do either of the above and not worry about a lovely boss making my life miserable because of it.

Sometimes when I'm interviewing at a smaller local business I think about asking how many of the executives are related to the owner just to avoid the environment I'm in now.

Take care with that! We have not fully ascertained its function, and the ticking is accelerating.
A few jobs ago was the most toxic environment I have ever been in and solidified in my behaviors that would land me in recovery a few years later.

There was an rear end in a top hat VP of IT operations who was one of those types who pulls the “do you know who I am?” card at restaurants. He was petty, vindictive and spiteful. Around him was a coterie of hangers-on and sycophants - friends and colleagues- who traveled with him from job to job and adopted his brash and petty style of leadership. If you weren’t in that circle, you were yelled at publicly, berated and mocked and generally made to feel like poo poo.

I was a few years late to this startup so I was definitely on the outside, but I was a budding alcoholic who could literally out drink everyone and my drunk self was ruder, louder, more caustic than everyone, and when I turned it on this group thought I was funnier than hell so I eventually fit in. Eventually I was an accepted part of the inner circle though I made many enemies within that same group because I wouldn’t suck up to the VP.

So I was among friends/enemies and I would go out drinking multiple times mid-week and risked a DUI every time I went out. But I learned a poo poo ton of tech, drove massive projects to completion and launched my tech chops into the stratosphere. I developed a caustic view of people and never hated as hard as I hated then.

That job is safely in my rear view mirror and I’m over six years sober, but I remind myself of that job because that job reminds me of what it is like to sell your soul for acceptance.

poo poo I know that story. I used to stress about either not being in the in-crowd with senior management or stressed to make sure I stayed with the in-crowd. Yeah, I had the problems with after-work "drinks" turning into benders, but I was lucky enough to be able to walk away from all that. Even today, I'll order a soda water or diet cola after a beer or two. I have zero desire or energy for that. I'm glad you were able to recognize and get help.

Now, I'm either old enough or skilled enough to no longer give a poo poo. Being somewhat frugal helps since that really adds up over time. Not needing to live paycheck to paycheck is liberating. I do my job to the best of my ability, and no longer let that poo poo get to me. But I will absolutely call a bluff (or not bluff if that's the case), life's too short to have that sort of Sword of Damocles hanging over me.

"Oh, you're threatening my job? OK, let me just get my stuff. I'll just call a couple recruiters who have been bugging the poo poo out of me to make a jump and have a new job in two weeks to a month"

Of course it helps if you can actually back that stance up with knowledge, experience, and skill. And also have that not be your default stance with everyone. I'm fairly genial and accommodating if I'm met halfway.
