yeah, mae is susceptible to the black goat's whispering because she wants to put the world on pause so her own directionless life doesn't feel so terrifying and empty, but she gets over it to the point where when the black goat makes personal contact with her its temptation is just meaningless noise

this also has the implication that the cultists are mentally less mature than a disassociative college-dropout womanchild who thinks vampires are defeated by burying them upside down so that they accidentally dig into the center of the earth

Yup. Trying to think of the murder death cult as if it is a real entity is just going to lead to brain spiders, because the game is literally just an allegory for the death of the rust belt. The hole/goat god is capitalism, the murder death cult are baby boomers.

understanding that things can exist in both real and allegorical capacities is like one of the basic tenets of literary analysis

the cult is real, the hole is real (though whether it's literally bottomless is in doubt), the black goat and sky cat might be real

they're also baby boomers, existential dread, capitalism, and the apathy of higher spiritual forces

fantastical intrusions upon commonly accepted reality is an entire thriving subgenre of writing, and NitW and LiS (and Kentucky Route Zero, which is basically NitW's morose Southern cousin) all fall solidly into it

Oh, I agree. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you shouldn't think of these things are entities that the cast need to deal with in the future, as in the context of the work and story they presented it does not matter. More so than many games, the story in NitW wraps up really neatly in a bow. Nothing they do once the camera cuts out matters. The hole will grow bigger, the town will die, they will all leave possum springs, people will replace the death cult.

It reminds me a lot of the ending of The Last of Us, in a way, which I similarly thought people overthought.

Elly asking Joel if he was telling the truth, and then him lying to her. She accepts and cuts to black. People debate if she believes him or not, or if she knows he is lying. The point is not to show whether or not elly believes him or not, it's explicitly to show that she has doubt, and also emphasize how Joel has taken her agency from her. What comes later does not matter at all, which is one of the reasons why the fact that they are making a equal feels so awkward.

I'd still kind of like to see a Night in the Woods 2 one day but I agree that the current story is pretty neatly wrapped up by the end and doesn't really need to be expanded on any further (hell, said hypothetical sequel doesn't even have to feature the same cast for that matter). I just like this particular universe they've crafted and wouldn't mind seeing more of it.

If it does feature the same characters though I would recommend giving Germ and especially Lori main character status and giving us more Angus hangouts.

I think what gets me is that I kinda expect things to either be straight up commentary or allegorical. Like, you could have a fantasy story with dragons and goblins where everything is a metaphor and it's like "yeah the dragon represents capitalism" or you could have a story with real people dealing with real socioeconomic issues

but Night in the Woods mixes both and that feels a bit weird

Yeah, for example the Life is Strange series shares more than a few common themes with this game even if the primary focus isn't the same and kind of has the same blend of literal and allegorical commentary to an extent (while I love both games I personally think Night in the Woods handles some of those themes a little better overall though).

In the mine confrontation, Bea brings up that, for all their discussion of the town dying and the mines closing and the loss of ARE JOBS the cultists are in fact all pretty well-to-do middle managers. Which only reinforces the allegory to Trump voters, few of whom were actually “economically anxious” but instead were mostly raging at the idea that the world was changing and leaving them.

There’s another whole interesting discussion about the allegory of unions and solidarity, where everything the cultists revere and worship only was around because people fought and died for the union, but those same cultists being middle managers and bosses are the exact same people keeping the Food Panther from unionizing.

Also, the goat neighbor is absolutely in the cult, in the hospital all his questions were about what happened and he ended with a weirdly awkward “well, I hope she recovers and is able to tell everyone EXACTLY what happened in the woods”

The scene in the epilogue with dad was kinda cheesy but I love how it's like "if we weren't clear enough about this throughout the game, UNIONS DUDE". I'm kinda sad I've seen several people think that the tooth is a symbol of the cult, what a way to completely miss the point of everything.

Also yeah I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that goat was being creepy as heck. I've seen so many people say the cranky neighbor is a cultist because he was mean to you, but seriously.. the goat.

Mae's neighbor who you can talk to around the beginning of the game (I believe he only shows up twice in the whole game, once there and another later at the hospital). Angry old alligator man is another possibility as far as the cult goes but he's also pretty big and it'd be kind of hard to hide a snout like that.

ah, that's a shame

I figured it would make for a great let's play game but I've looked through half a dozen on youtube and people are just going from objective to objective and straight up ignoring dialogue which is bizarre in a narrative game like this :sigh:

I think the lack of spoken dialogue makes it a difficult game to LP unless you put some effort into bringing in other people to do the voices, as it’s usually pretty boring listen to one person read.

Yeah, I don't see it. I can't think of a worse game to LP than Night in the Woods. There is nothing that can be added to this game by having a youtube personality talking over it. I mean, unless it's a distinguished english gentleman speaking in an academic way about the comparisons of the game to gothic literature and how it applies to the modern themes of late state capitalism.

Who said anything about talking over it, I just enjoy seeing people experience it for the first time :sigh: If anything, I feel like the general trend of new let's plays voicing everything takes away from the experience because they're too busy talking to really take in the message (on top of reading everything wrong).
