I love DC, including Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Wonder Woman, but...they look like poo poo compared to the Disney-bought special effects in the milquetoast Marvel movies. Justice League was especially terrible.

theyre also produced with a basic understanding of camerawork lighting set design costuming and all sorts of other film school 101 bullshit that no longer exists in other mainstream films thats why they feel so distinctive even though the core plotlines are nearly indistinguishable from their marvel equivalents im not saying theyre good im saying if critics cared about aesthetics theyd be all over that crap instead of complaining that theyre not sufficiently cartoony

the film ends with Wonder Woman pulling the plug out of the Iron Lung Konstantin Chernenko was attached to and then the end credits dedicated to the brave fighters of the mujaheddin

George Lucas posted:

In the world we live in—and the system we’ve created for ourselves, in terms of it’s a big industry—you cannot lose money. So the point is that you’re forced to make a particular kind of movie. And I used to say this all the time, with people, you know, back when Russia was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and they’d say, “Oh, but aren’t you so glad that you’re in America?” And I’d say, well, I know a lot of Russian filmmakers and they have a lot more freedom than I have. All they have to do is be careful about criticizing the government. Otherwise, they can do anything they want.

the prequel trilogy has the still relevant take that military contractors are bad and untrustworthy and that its a bad idea to expand executive authority imagine a modern woke movie saying something that controversial

I'm sure there were times that you at least weren't wrong.

A useful perspective, though, is the relationship between Shakespeare and the censors. Their job was, essentially, to help him avoid offending anyone who could have his head chopped off. I mean, by no means an ideal set of affairs in terms of free speech, but more of a problem with a de-facto aristocracy than with a dictator. Interestingly, that could also accurately describe the relationship between artists and producers in the USA. The two aren't equivalent by any means, which is why neither really wanted the other to exist very much.

Hollywood should burn to the ground in the next wildfire, and the rest of LA with it just to be safe, so I'm not sure what your point is. As for the USSR, they raised and supported many technically and formally brilliant people, which is a staple of dictatorships, as formal focus is prestigious and not politically dangerous. And it's completely unrelated to artistic stifling.

Some Guy TT
Aug 30, 2011

why do you think this is some weird quirk that applies only to dictatorships the academy serves the exact same purpose for american film because it allows hollywood people to pretend like they serve some noble artistic purpose instead of just money and rape thats why they jumped on the woke bandwagon and still arent coming down now that metoo has killed their plausible deniability
