https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-28/mardi-gras-motion-to-ban-liberal-party-from-parade-defeated/10438620

quote:

A woman declared she was "having a panic attack" and stormed out of a fierce Mardi Gras annual general meeting, which ended with several divisive motions being defeated.
The motions, which would have seen the Liberal Party and NSW Police banned from marching in the annual parade, had been proposed by left-wing group Pride in Protest.
Tensions rose when the future direction of the Mardi Gras was discussed, with jeering, applause and tears leaving a mark on the three-hour meeting.
The woman who walked out of the meeting had been moving a procedural motion, asking for members to have respect and not talk over others during the debate.
As the tone of debate took a turn for the worse, she revealed she was having a panic attack, grabbed her water bottle and left.
The Pride in Protest motions also included barring Prime Minister Scott Morrison from marching in the parade and "reviewing" corporate sponsorships with companies like ANZ and Qantas.
Holly Brooke — who is standing as a Pride in Protest candidate for the board — argued that a review of the UK's Pride festival sponsorship had sparked change in some companies.
She said Virgin Atlantic had this year announced it would no longer provide seats on its flights to involuntarily deport people from the UK, after it was pointed out the policy was at odds with its sponsorship of London's Pride festival.
The Pride in Protest motions were comfortably defeated, but the fact they were even tabled, has caused concern within the event's ranks.
Ahead of the meeting, dozens of parade royalty signed and circulated a letter to members warning if the Pride in Protest ideas were successful, the event could go bankrupt.
Mardi Gras chief executive Terese Casu described last year's parade as the "most successful" and claimed it had injected an estimated $60 million into the NSW economy.

"Many people know that if we hadn't redefined Mardi Gras it would have died a long time ago," she told the AGM.
Despite the polarised views at the meeting, Mardi Gras co-chair Kate Wickett maintained that the event was unified.
Chair Michael Woodhouse reminded the full lecture theatre at the University of Sydney that any successful motions would still need to be approved by the Mardi Gras board.
While most motions failed, two that did pass included giving all original Mardi Gras marchers, known as the 78ers, life membership of the event, and that Sydney should bid to host the World Pride festival in 2023.

Edit: Main page has the petition at 30983, clicking to the petition's page rewinds signatures to 30866 then counts forwards to build hype. Thought it looked too good to be true.

Between that and the Tele's cover about children on Naaru I think we're close to the point where the Murdoch press accepts Labor's going to win, like they did some time in 2007.

They would need 60% of the caucus to back it, which won't happen. Plus they would need to go to a full ballot of members which would take ages and give Morrison the perfect opportunity to call a snap election.

Keen for the Channel 9/ Fairfax direct to VHS movie with Bill Shorten kissing Murdoch's ring and Murdoch going "Looks like your my Prime Minister now Baby."

And Bill Shorten pulls his necktie and says "I get no respect round here, no respect I tells you."

And while Shorten sucks replacing a leader comes with its own costs. They could have done it after the 2016 election but they did surprisingly well in the campaign and Shorten was a part of that.

Why do they need to do that? Ablo tried doing that earlier this year when there was the by elections in the ALP seats over the dual nationality stuff ups, however Shorten was able to hold onto those seats and in some cases increase their margin. The last thing the ALP needs is leadership tension, especially with the Nats wanting Barnaby back and I'm sure Abbott and his crew are wanting another run at the Liberal leadership

Politically this is incorrect, this man has watched 3 Prime Minister's fall and each of them have tried some version of the Kill Bill Stratergy.

Kill Bill was a mistake because it made voters go "Yeah Nah, righto but what does his party stand for if he is so bad?"

And then Bill shows them these policies and loving hell they actually like them.

Putting the spotlight on Bill means that they sort of concluded he was bad and then took a good look at the ALP to see if anything else was bad and they only found a few things which are dwarved by the Hockey Budgets, cuts to Medicare, Health, Education, Failure on Climate Change, energy, water, surplus return ect.

Kill Bill has just made voters look around a bit more.

Now they don't give a gently caress about Bill, they give a gently caress about undoing the damage the LNP has done.

THE Nationals are investigating at least 35 NSW members, including at senior levels, for their links to white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups.

The party is in crisis over the unprecedented situation where it appears supporters of white supremacist policies and members of alt-Right groups have been recruited to the Young Nationals since last December and risen to hold senior positions in the broader party.

A dossier of 40 members, obtained by The Daily Telegraph but not published for legal reasons, shows extensive links to neo-Nazi, fascist and alt-Right groups such as The New Guard, Antipodean Resistance and the Lads Society.

In some cases, Nationals members have posted photographs of Nazi guards outside the Holocaust extermination camp at Auschwitz and posted comments celebrating Adolf Hitler. One female member created a National Socialist (Nazi) Women’s group online.

Nationals state director Ross Cadell said he was “extremely troubled” by the views of some members.

“We are uncovering people every day,” he said.

“We are now up to 19 we have a high degree of confidence in and we are investigating 35 people. It’s spread beyond the Young Nationals and we are looking at the National Party in general, including the metro branch.

“One of the people seems to be in an Antipodean Resistance propaganda video and the quotes seem to celebrate Adolf Hitler in a very strong way.”

Mr Cadell said some members under investigation are on party branch executives.

He said he would seek endorsement this morning from the National Party meeting of constitution and ethics to send letters to 19 members asking why they should not be expelled because of extremist links or commentary.

Under investigation are party members who seem to support neo-Nazi views and at least three National Party political staff who recruited them, and others linked to them.

Mr Cadell said a staff member for a Nationals minister, who the Telegraph has not named, is under investigation for recruiting some of the new members. There is no suggestion this staff member or the minister was aware of the views of those recruited.

Private messages reveal discussions among two party members about signing up 24 people now under investigation for extremist views before May’s Young Nationals Conference.

“Sorry I was late. Will hassle them to get their forms in this week,” a recruiter, who is an experienced political adviser for Nationals politicians, said on Facebook messenger.

The Telegraph has also obtained an email from Mr Cadell to NSW Liberal Party state director Chris Stone, in May, which first raised concerns about the new members prior to the conference.

Mr Cadell had been alerted to the new members by Young Nationals state chair Jessica Price-Purnell in the days before the Young Nationals conference.

She urged in an email that the matter be “attended to urgently” after she noticed “an influx of new Young Nationals” coming from Sydney.

The dossier reveals the party members under investigation do not come from country areas but live in suburbs across Sydney, including Pennant Hills, Rockdale, South Hurstville and Bronte.

Material in the dossier shows one member comparing online the Holocaust to women who have abortions.

Another Nationals member shared a Nazi photograph with the caption “Join the National Sorority!” Others have posted of the “fourteen words”, a white supremacist phrase about securing the future for white children.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said he was worried that the party could be “infiltrated by extremist people with extremist views”.

“We do not want them in our party,” he said.

WHO THEY ARE

THE DINGOES

An alt-right group that shares content with followers with an underlying theme of white supremacy. The men particularly take aim at the indigenous and multicultural values held in Australia. The Dingoes describe themselves as, “a group of young Australian men … who take great enjoyment in ridiculing the grievance-mongering of our media and imported popular culture.”

THE NEW GUARD

A white supremacy group that believes it must “fix the West” and advocate for a White Australia. Despite a large following, it has had minimal activity since April. On the Facebook Page, it says, “We see the lies of the few. We must fix the West. The cause is our people. We seek optimal physical, mental, social, and spiritual health for all.”

ANTIPODEAN RESISTANCE

A neo-Nazi group describing members as “21st Century Hitler Youth” and uses a swastika in its branding. Antipodean Resistance wants to “reclaim” Australia as white land and restore White Superiority and achievement. On its homepage, the group says, “we aim to provide an alternative for young Australians to the filth of modern society by setting a good example for people to live up to … such as alcoholism, drugs and race mixing … We oppose substance abuse, homosexuality, and all other rotten, irresponsible distractions laid before us by Jews and globalist elites.”

THE LADS SOCIETY

A group of Australian males who say they are “concerned over the state of affairs” of Australia. They hold regular meet ups across the country in the hope of building a better future for Australia. The main group is based in Melbourne, with smaller branches in other states. According to its website, the group is “committed to restoring the elements of our nation, starting at the individual, and community levels.”
