That's certainly possible but most of us don't wear oxygen masks so there's no real reason to prohibit beards.

I'll be shaving mine after the 30 day trial, I hate having a beard.

Hey guys don't ask me how I know but the NDI75 project is up and running and December 1st 2018 will be a magical day for anyone who didn't get their vet card.

Also, the new requirement is "Finished Basic" now, not 10 years of service.

Theres supposed to be a whole online process on how to apply for the card but I haven't seen it yet

Oh and the card makes no distinction between regular or reserves, only uses your first and last year of service, and you can have your rank written in french OR english.

I note that the Canada.ca info page still states that if you released before 2016 you have to wait until summer '19 to apply for one :v:

The baggage fee for WestJet / AirCanada is worth it alone. It's like $30 a bag otherwise.

I have a pretty hard time asking for discounts anywhere in person because of my service, especially for small things like restaurant bills or whatever. Maybe for a car I'd bother flashing a fancy veteran card but I'd just feel like a sleaze bag trying to skim 10% off some nachos. It's a very "thank me for my service" thing, I can't be alone in this?

You're not alone. Big ticket items are realistically the only things where I'd flop down my military identity, because if I can save $1500 on something I'm buying anyway, why wouldn't I? But movie tickets? A burger? Eh.

Maybe you can influence things in your favour with a given trade, but I'm pretty sure it's a crapshoot of 'who needs this trade most' at the time you become qualified.

There's also rumblings of changes coming to the way postings are handled. We're talking years away in terms of actually happening though. If you're really married to a specific place, you could get lucky with a Reservist position.

I have both the 82OD ruck sack and the new cadpat one and have been ordered to return one. I've never had the opportunity to use the new one in the field so I don't know which one is better.

What are the pros and cons of both of the ruck sacks so I can decide which one to return? If it matters I was fitted for the new one with some sort of frame.

Jcam
Jan 4, 2009

Yourhead
I've always sworn by the old ruck because I'm a creature of habit, but the new (soon to be replaced as well I've heard?) ruck has its own merits. Since the new ruck is fitted for the curvature of your back, it does not play well with frag/plates at all. It also has a higher base weight, which obviously means when both bags are fully loaded up you're ultimately hoofing it with more on your back with the new ruck. It fits a lot more kit however, we're talking a lot more, so if you're just deploying and then remaining mostly static it's a godsend for ensuring you arrive in location with everything you'll need. When you're not suited up with frag/plates, it's probably more comfortable day-to-day as well as it keeps the weight higher up on your back, and distributes it better.

tl;dr If you foresee a lot of walking/patrols when you're in the field or deployed, old ruck since it's lighter and plays nice with other accompanying kit. If you're going to be mostly static, new ruck, since you can carry more kit.

Edit: actually another thing to think about, is how much of a footprint the drat things take up in your home or room while away on course, tasking, training, etc, so take that into account too

acumen
Mar 17, 2005
Fun Shoe
Yeah it really depends on what trade you are and how long you spend in the field relying on your ruck. It was absolute garbage for anything recce related but if you're just camping out for a day or two and not going anywhere as jcam said it'll be fine. Also jumping with it is god awful.
