I mean the whole whattaboutism thing and 'answer is somewhere in the middle' has been a central points of south park's politics since the start. I've met a lot of would-be-chuds who cite South Park for their cutting edge social commentary. Having said that, blaming a cartoon for the bigotry or racism in this country is silly and verges on social hysteria of rock music corrupting the kids. South Park worked because the culture was already primed for it, not the other way around.

South Park is illustrative of the cultural rot surrounding social progress from the 90s on up to where we are now, where the worst sin was to care and the march of social progress was inevitable. It eventually metastasized into chuds complaining about SJWs and doing things just to own the libs, but to suggest that it's somehow responsible is dangerously close to scapegoating. Everyone on both sides of the political divide had a hand in it. The wider culture was all about pretending everything was fine until it actually was fine. The idea that racism would just die out as older generations went away was the prevailing idea, so no one wanted to do the hard and unpleasant work of addressing the underlying problems. The veneer of progress disguised the rot until we eventually got where we are now.

I think we're gonna look back on the cynicism and nihilism of the 90s as a mainstream cultural reaction against the vicissitudes of late capitalism, just by a part of the culture that didn't have a conception of anything other than all-consuming 80s capitalism. I can see clear through-lines from 90s anti-consumerism to today's various anticapitalist movements.
