Addamere posted:I'm just curious if there's some sort of funny procedural or legal thing that says, for example, a Cat 5 superstorm nailing NYC in December can't be called a hurricane due to it technically falling outside hurricane season so instead it's just the Winter 2018 Nor'easter, or maybe there can't be hurricane chasers during it because we sent them all home for the off-season, etc. No, the only complicated thing is if a storm rolls over the new year. Storms in 2019 should follow the 2019 name list but a tropical depression on Jan1 is really part of the 2018 season so to speak. Theres approximately zero chance of a category 5 "superstorm" hitting NYC in december having tropical characteristics. Sandy hit in October and had undergone extratropical transition before landfall.

Hurricanes can be hurricanes any time of year, even if it isn't hurricane season. It just needs to be a warm-core system (ie: have 'tropical characteristics'), which is just a scientific distinction. Nor'easters aren't hurricanes because they are baroclinic cyclones that feed off the difference between warm/cold dry/wet air. Hurricanes don't give a hoot about that and just want tons of hot damp air. You don't get usually get hurricanes outside of their season because there is too much cold dry air around. You do get a lot of Nor'easters though because this cold air from the continent tends to run into the still pretty warm and humid air from the tropics right around the eastern coast.

The only time Hurricanes aren't called Hurricanes is when they're in East and Southeast Asia. They're called Typhoons there.

Xelkelvos posted:Addamere is extremely dumb and idk why I replied to him. There is actually some argument about what counts as a hurricane/typhoon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Catarina The US’s NHC immediately recognized this storm as a hurricane. Apparently every meteorologist outside the US disagrees that this storm was a tropical cyclone and not a subtropical one. I am not a meteorologist so I really can’t comment on the argument because it’s apparently highly technical and some people got really angry about it or something.
