i wonder if there'll be anyone making :filez: rips of the digital-only stuff from Filmstruck? i imagine this is gonna take a lot of movies from "widely available" to "nearly or literally impossible to find" in one fell swoop otherwise.

One month to go, and I only have... oh... 210 things left on my Filmstruck watchlist. :suicide:

Not Criterion, but there's a really good documentary on filmmaking in Nazi Germany called Hitler's Hollywood. It covers a lot beyond the overt propaganda films, and explores fascist themes in the popular entertainment, and a couple of subversive/banned films. It offers a critical examination of the films without fetishizing them, and it's a really interesting subject that I would have otherwise found unapproachable.

Not extremely obscure since it's a Robert Altman movie but at least it's an incredibly small TV movie! If you haven't, check out Secret Honor. It's an entire 90 minute film starring ONLY Philip Baker Hall as Nixon talking to himself. It's incredible.

I purged my list from 155 to 93 yesterday taking off stuff that should be readily available elsewhere, stuff from directors I haven't been crazy about, and stuff that I straight-up don't have time for (looking at you, Bondarchuk War and Peace miniseries). Those were the easy cuts though, it's gonna get rough in late November.

What're the must watch pieces of original content?

I always liked adventures in moviegoing, esp with artists whose work I admire. Also they have the commentary for the original King Kong which was the first ever commentary and it’s pretty interesting.

What are the best Ozu, Naruse and Oshima? I feel like some Japanese dramas.

I think we should call the Avengers.

For Ozu, Tokyo Story is the go-to answer (there's a reason it appears on just about every "greatest films" list), though his style and themes are so consistent, especially in his later period, that you're likely to enjoy all of his works if you've enjoyed one and vice versa. Personally, I'm a fan of Floating Weeds.

Oshima is a tough one to answer since he's not known for what you'd consider straight dramas. He was part of the Japanese New Wave and his work correspondingly both extremely experimental in presentation and heavily politically charged. I guess Boy isn't a bad choice if you want something straightforward, but his essential film is Death by Hanging in my opinion.

Can't comment on Naruse since I've yet to delve into him myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about When a Woman Ascends the Stairs.

Edit: I just realised that Boy isn't part of the Criterion Collection, which is close to a capital crime.

tokyo story is a masterpiece obviously but for my money the best ozu starting place is late spring. you can't really go wrong, though, but for now i'd stay away from the silents and other early films except a story of floating weeds and i was born but...

naruse is still underrated in the west, i'm not sure there's been a consensus on what the best starting place is, but i would say that sound of the mountain, flowing, lightning, late chrysanthemums, repast, and scattered clouds are good entry points, i've still only seen 10 of his films but i've enjoyed them all so like ozu you probably can't go wrong

oshima is pricklier like mentioned above, probably the most aesthetically and politically radical filmmaker of his generation. in addition to death by hanging and boy, cruel story of youth and merry christmas mr. lawrence are fairly accessible. in the realm of the senses and empire of passion if you want to watch art porn (i'm not trying to be dismissive they are some of his best movies but i'm trying to be realistic here lol) my favorites are the ceremony, the sun's burial, and gohatto aka taboo, none of which are really good entry points

I've got a mate in NYC right now who's offered to haul some stuff back over for me so I can save on Barnes and Noble's lovely shipping costs, but he leaves before the Bergman set releases :( So far I've got a shortlist of:

Andrei Rubelv
Hiroshima Mon Amour
Kagemusha
High and Low
Midnight Cowboy

Out of the two Kurosawa's is one less essential than the other as a blind buy? I don't want to take up too much space in my friend's suitcase and even though all of these are blind buys I'm pretty set on the others.

Detective No. 27

High and Low and Kagemusha are so apples and oranges it's hard to choose.

I'd say High and Low would be "less essential" than Kagemusha is. Kagemusha might be more rewatchable and the colors are gorgeous. That final battle is so gorgeous and apocalyptic. It's a choice not made lightly.

Midnight Cowboy is a pretty spare disc (maybe that's thematically appropriate) but nice to have. Rublev and Mon Amour are absolutely essential.

Kurosawa's filmography is varied enough that it's impossible to say whether High & Low or Kagemusha is more essential. If you want the full picture of who Kurosawa was as a filmmaker they're both essential.

Ah, that makes sense. Glad I could preorder it as I wasn't sure if I'd chicken out, but even with our absurd exchange rate and shipping it only costs $7 a film. That's insane.

Turns out Andrei Rublev was out of stock for the pick up though so I might go back and order that anyway.

I am looking to order the Bergman boxset from B&N, but I am wondering if any fellow Canadian can help me. Right now, the set is $150, and with shipping, it's around $165 USD. As of right now, that set is ~215-220 CDN. My only fear is getting hit with duty, which, using a duty calculator, can be another $28 CDN. In total, this set could cost around ~240-245 CDN. Would it just be better to order from Canadian Amazon? I am still saving roughly 20 bucks. Has anyone had an issue with duty in the past? I am assuming that the size of this boxset will mean that it probably gets stopped at the border.
