I get the exact same emotional context shivers from music everyone is describing. The song has to be good though. Sometimes the song being good can give fake emotion to a scene that would otherwise fail to get a response but the ones I keep coming back to are both good scenes on their own and good music on their own

I can certainly definitely get the whole gooseflesh deal (and up to literal tears) from music but yeah, most of the time it's tied to emotional context. A semi-recent video game example I guess would be the climactic final battle of the previous FF14 expansion Heavensward, the fight's the culmination of a real long journey and the fact that it opens with just the sorrowful main theme before ramping up with the expansion's leitmotifs as the phases go on works super well if you've been invested in the story.

This is something that really stood out to me in Red Dead 2 -- every little story arc in each chapter has its own musical theme and there will be like a lighthearted, hanging around with your friends version, a melancholy version, a sneaky stealth version, and a combat version, and then in some climactic story moment they'll kick it into high gear with operatic vocals and poo poo. The soundtrack is really well done, not just in like "it's good to listen to" but you could play me a song from it and I could probably tell you what was going on in the story whenever it originally played in the 60+ hour game. Shoutout to chapter 3 especially, when the theme kicked in during the final mission there it blew my mind

the credits music for mega man zero 4 actually hits me pretty hard, since the zero series has probably the most coherent and interesting story of basically any mega man thing ever made and zero 4 especially has a really surreal tone and the ending straight-up is just zero dying and not magically coming back to life like in x and also marks like the first time in the mega man series that things, canonically, do not just get worse at the end

yeh i played through heavensward (not so much stormblood after initial release, I'm MMO'd out) and that's a pretty good example of what i mean

the music would probably do the deed on its own for me but the story behind all that adds a lot of meaning that observably makes the effect stronger

(not to mention the timing of rampups with phase changes but that feels a bit more... directly manipulative? rather than just getting the effect for free because it's Good Music i mean, i suppose)
yeah they're good at that, stormblood has another good example with a boss fight they built up for months and their song has this whole emotional arc over three measures as the boss comes to terms with why they have to fight, every time I do it the second/third phase transition is like a fuckin dagger to my heart

To be fair, things did a whole lot of getting worse in the middle, and all of it due to the dumbest punishment mankind could ever conceive. 4 has some really good songs, though.

the credits music in shadow hearts is either a weight finally getting lifted as you get a moment to look back on how hosed up and insane the entire adventure was and how much yuri's grown since the start, or a slam in the face with how loving depressing the bad ending is that makes you wonder what the hell is going to happen to yuri after this

i figured that was what you were going for, and i agree

i think it's that even music you just happen to like, or music that's intense but really isn't subtle or emotional (DOOM music for example, or hell my favorite Destiny 2 samples) isn't as devoid of social and emotional context as some dink with a microphone with pop filter removed and a bar of soap or a gravelly voice or whatever the flying hell is assmurred nowadays

(hell, insofar as "fight or flight tension" is an emotion, doom music totally counts, who am i kidding)

Every time I post an FFXIV track I end up going through a whole bunch of 'em before I even realize it. I feel like I might just rank it as my favorite soundtrack of all time at this point, though obviously it has the advantage of being an MMO and thus having a ton of music in general.

Still though, something like these two being boss fight tracks from the exact same game is just kind of amazing to me.

I'm gonna put this in spoilers for the guy that hasn't played SB yet tsukuyomi. first phase isn't too special, its just a mournful rendition of the stormblood garlean motif, but it speaks to the meaninglessness of what's happening. second movement accompanies their soliloquy ("ah I understand, it feeds on my spite") its just a really tragic and ephemeral piano piece as they literally face their inner demons, and finally at the end of the phase soken starts pounding the poo poo out of his piano ("but it is too late for me, there can be no redemption") and the guitars and vocals kick in for a sorrowful but resolute ending as they realize that they're going to die and that they probably deserve it, but they're still not going to stop fighting

its an incredibly powerful way to end a character's story, maybe more powerfully than that character deserves but its A Good Fight

Aside from the music the whole thing is also a good example of them seamlessly integrating storytelling into the fight, particularly with the second phase. They've certainly come a long way from the incredibly clunky and poorly thought out mid-dungeon cutscenes from the end of 2.0.

depends on the bounty in question, e.g. in Strikes or in the Crucible or in Gambit or whatever

also once in a while the game is just really bad about assigning credit for killing blows in group content. Just Bungie Things

I appreciate the muted cutscenes because my own imagination filling in the blanks at the outlandish nonsensical events that occur onscreen are better than whatever they actually recorded.

Alternately, have you considered that, like, it's not so much the deaf protagonist but the player who is deaf to the true problems of modern society :drugnerd:

Square-Enix have been mostly disappointed in their big AAA western IPs but have had a lot of positive returns from their mid-budget projects like Life is Strange and Before the Storm last year, so if we're lucky they'll probably greenlight a whole bunch of incomprehensible garbage like this in the future.
