My girlfriend and I both voted this morning in Mecklenburg county, NC.
We both sailed through the process as there was nearly no one there when we went (and I'm proud of her, I pushed her really hard to get her NC license and register to vote after she moved here from KY last June.)

I didn't know who this lady was but I voted for someone named "Tigress" for the Soil and Water Conservation Division. Google tells me I voted for this lady. Cool.

Anyway it felt good but I have little hope of any real change in NC for awhile. I also voted against all the CHUDdy constitutional amendments but I expect them to pass because as usual they claim to do the exact opposite of what they actually will. Still I felt so good about it that when I encountered a mid-thirties guy about to leave work after handing me my breakfast I encouraged him to go vote and he politely but firmly said voting will never help him or people like him. I only said that not voting definitely won't help.

That put a damper on my good mood, but the real damper will come tomorrow when I see the results. #NothingMatters

I've been getting a lot of texts asking me if I'm voting.
Got one today from "Emma" from Americans for Prosperity asking if indeed I planned to vote.

I'm guessing you can take a stab at how that went down.

I wish I lived in NC so I could vote for her too. Here I get to vote for school board candidates who all have their kids in charter schools.

I think it's gonna backfire like gently caress on olds / Republicans that they call everything they don't like full blown socialism because it seems like a lot of people my age are going "well, maybe socialism is fine then"

Also, my polling place was pretty drat packed when I was there and one of the poll volunteers (think older librarian lady type) was asked "Has it been busy today?" and she was like "Oh my gosh! Yes! Not a breath since we opened the doors! It's WONDERFUL!" and I smiled to myself, and thanked the workers for their service today which really seemed to catch them off guard, but made them happy.

e: also a lot of people my age and younger, so, well, fingers crossed.

I agree, and I've started to think this more because lately Rush/Hannity have literally been outright screaming the word Socialism at everything that moves and it's become absolutely hollow to anyone who wouldn't have already recoiled in horror at it to begin with. It's definitely been an uptick in usage, and pretty recently.

I remember two variants on this but can't confirm either one because my Google Fu is apparently weak this morning:

[Foreign auto maker] opens factory in [insert southern state] and has to redo all of their documentation as pictures because too many workers can't read.
[Foreign auto maker] wants to open factory in [insert southern state] but decides to gently caress off because they'd rather have a union presence to help manage workers and the state had passed or was threatening to pass some nutty anti-union legislation.

I think the latter one was Volkswagen/Tennessee but who knows, could just be a brain fart. Not that it matters in the year of our piss 2018.

This one was a real lol if you want to give it a read but the TLDR is: Volkswagon built a plant in TN, fully supported their employees there unionizing and there wouldn't be any union fees. The auto workers rejected unionizing. The [insert doing stupid thing that hurts yourself and only yourself] to own the libs meme really feels too easy at this point.

Yep. They called brutal capitalist warlord Obama a godless hippie communist for so long that we can run actual stoner communists and they aren't any more or less terrifying.

Throw in that commies love the second amendment and republicans have now inadvertently created a perfect incubator for a communist revolution.

Also, most countries that have some sort of socialism are actually happier and healthier than Americans. Of course, good luck convincing chuds that America isn't inherently better than everywhere just because.

Too emphasize a point:

Volkswagen was literally begging the employees to unionize. Because unlike retarded American companies Volkswagen understands that your employees being in a union takes 99% of the HR burden off the company. The union handles all the messy details of company/employee interaction so the whole company runs smoother and everyone walks away in a win/win.

Tennessee republicans are so retarded they literally went to their employer and demanded lower pay and worse benefits and no power to negotiate.

I unironically think the Republicans spending 8 years calling center-left Obama a socialist helped reset the Overton Window and helped Bernie gain a foothold.

No, you see you win them over with convincing rhetoric and bipartisan solutions that veer heavily in their directions. And then you take their abuse as the idiotic policies fail and the wealth gap gets wider. And then you watch half your base not vote and the other half vote for the other side and you wonder how you can be more inclusive to the neo-nazis.

If 2012 Obama ran against 1984 Reagan the American people would have run screaming into the arms of Reagan, because Obama's massive military industrial complex and his totalitarian brutality with mass incarcerations and militarization of police departments would have scared the living poo poo out of people.

Obama literally makes Reagan look like a hippie, and now we have liberals frantically trying to push the Overton window into full fascism and republicans tipping their hand by calling the guy who built Trump's police state and deportation machine a commie.
