Waffle House posted:I have respect for John Cornyn. Whether it was he or a page manager I interacted with on Facebook, he directly engaged me when I had questions about legislation, providing full documentation from the legislature's .gov site, along with the bill text. He's garbage. During the Net Neutrality stuff, he (most likely his staff) replied via physical mail to my near endless faxes. I appreciated the act but his message was typical surface freedom for consumers that in reality upheld a corporation's rights to be lovely. He's been silent to me ever since, mostly voting in lockstep with the Republican party while showing zero spine w/r/t Trump. He also casually pitches racist dogwhistles on Twitter, and he's been chummy as hell with horrible judicial nominations. He has some okay political instincts and he does his homework more often than not, but it masks an institutional cruelty.

CNN showing Harris and Dallas counties still at 16% and 28% respectively. Are they just not updating those percents anymore?

I remember when the DNC did their ballot initiatives and it was like UHC? 97% Yes Free College Tuition? 95% Yes Full Communism Now? 87% Yes College Debt Forgiveness? 93% Yes But all their candidates are like "I support a sustainable initiative to establish a commission to investigate the plausibility of means tested time limited tax credits for small business owners who employ veteran women of color in order to establish a more affordable health insurance" when asked about it.

I still feel bad for trying to influence her vote, but those two were poo poo and worded as inoffensive as possible.

I'm looking at TPM for the election map. They're calling it for Cruz with like 30-40% left to report. Is this because all the major urban areas have reported? How are the pundits so certain that the other 1/3rd or so of the votes won't turn it around for Beto?

I was not ready for this race to be as close as it was. When I first checked and it was 52% beto and 18% lupe, I thought "wow, only 0.1% votes counted but sure, that seems right." I had more hope than I realized.

My favorite part is where it has Travis County as 100% reporting, but if you look at the Travis County site, they have 100% reporting...with only 4k voting today. How...what? And that's the numbers that they're using on all the MSM sites right now, with 100% reporting.

I am shocked at all the people itt poo poo-talking Beto The man just came within 5-6 points in a statewide election in an off year, this is completely insane and unprecedented He is not going to go away because he’s the best thing to happen to the Texas Democratic Party since the end of Reconstruction.

Badger of Basra posted:I am shocked at all the people itt poo poo-talking Beto Yep. Beto ran a bold, inclusive campaign with a strong grassroots movement in a state with a lot of awful people. Lots of good ones, too. He lifted up a lot of boats. Will keep an eye on him no matter what - especially if the unthinkable happens and we get Truman/Dewey later. Cruz is dogshit. He's also an incumbent, he didn't have a Moore-esque pedo scandal, and his old rear end base is getting older.

Beto is proof that an aggressive outreach campaign can have massive impact on a statewide race in Texas. If the Democratic Party actually invested in ongoing outreach, this shows that Texas could be fully competitive in all state wide races in 2020.

Badger of Basra posted:I am shocked at all the people itt poo poo-talking Beto He came within 5 points against the incumbent on an off-year that generally supports the opposing party...when Texas normally leans nearly 20 points to the Republican. The NIMBY poo poo getting rejected in Austin, knocking out the lesser Sessions... and simply demonstrating that running hard left and getting out the vote does wonders.

Yeah he probably elected two US reps, a few state senators, and a bunch of state house candidates. The statewide races besides gov are all way closer than normal. The tweet I posted a few days ago is dead on - this is a result that amazes Texas Democrats and disappointment everyone else, because they were expecting Beto in a walk or something.
