Yeah it's this. Like I said earlier kids are off-limits, but that's not the same thing as saying "we need to schedule direct action around his kids' schedule" which would be ridiculous. And the guy is literally calling for concentration camps - too bad about his kids losing some sleep or not feeling safe, but there's an awful lot of that going around and their dad bears some responsibility for it. The poster who said they're low on the priority queue for sympathy was correct.

The thread already went over this. In a legal sense this is very much true. In DC "Political affiliation" is a protected class according to the The DC Human Rights Act and the Bias-Related Crime Act of 1989. So in a sense yes Republicans are a protected class, you are not allowed to treat them differently on the basis of their political affiliation.

Whether or not this is good law is a separate discussion. I don't know to what extent these protections would be expected to be extended to people who are literally members of the Nazi party.

think about it for two seconds: if Gillum lost in Florida, how was he going to win in Indiana or Missouri?

this is the path where Manchin gets primaried for real and then the idiots who primary him watch that guy lose by 25 and feel good about it

it's very clear progressives are the right way to go in FL, probably the right way to go in GA (GA-6 suggests this), and incredibly unlikely to succeed in chud country

Yeahhhhh, not to defend Jacobin, but they definitely had a bumpy start.

In general I enjoy reading Jacobin and think they do a good job keeping the ideas of socialism and anti-capitalism relevant to contemporary society and events. Obviously no magazine/journal is going to be perfect all the time but I'd still call Jacobin a net positive, especially when it comes to speaking to the early millennial crowd like me who realizes capitalism has hosed us all and is ready for a fundamental change.

I maintain that thinking solely in terms of progressive/centrist is limited. Going full Republican-lite is clearly a bad strategy even in CHUD country; going progressive narrows gaps but isn't necessarily a winner. The two candidates who beat the PVI of their states (Brown and Klobuchar) both walk an interesting line in terms of their balance on the issues that's neither strongly one or the other. Stop thinking of it as a line and more like a set of sliders.

interesting thread about Ohio:

basically, the take-away is that Ohio may be permanently shifting red, as it's a state that's basically in the process of dying and turning into Indiana, because it's dominated by white rural voters without a college education in towns that are basically dying, and every educated young person gets the hell out

Pages ago but living in LA, most of the transplants I know are from Ohio. No one wants to live there.

The shooting last night was in my hometown. My parents didn’t even hear about it until I told them and I’m not even in the country right now. Luckily I am too old to know anyone who goes to that place anymore.

Alex Jones has bragged repeatedly in the last year or so that he has significant access to the White House and talks to the president and his advisors. Now mind you Alex Jones claims a lot of wild poo poo so normally you take such a claim with a grain of salt; however the fact that Sarah Sanders re-uploaded the doctored video that originated on Paul Joseph Watson's Twitter- it rather very strongly suggests that there exists a communication channel for Alex Jones to send material directly to the White House.

To be fair, gaslighting has now become something much different than the actual meaning. It used to be when someone was intentionally loving with your head and then denying it to make you think you were crazy; now people use it more to mean when someone (usually a white person) is intentionally or unintentionally denying some facet of what their words project and how that could be oppressing others, while at the same time denying the very social presence of that oppression. generally now it applies to racial discussions.

on the one hand i think it's an important thing to note that people could be doing this and discuss it, and to have a word for it, on the other as a mentally ill person i'm always kind of pissed when the language of mental illness is co-opted in this way.

it is used that way but i see it used mostly when trump or a republican denies something they said or did especially when it was something captured on video.
