Nice work on inktober everyone who was participating, I really wanted to do that this year but there was just no extra time. I especially loved Lofi's "slice" entry, and Internet Kraken's interpretations of demons, but all of you killed it this year.

These aren't perfect but they're done enough that I can print them as A2 posters for an open studio event this weekend.

I make games!

Since my primary project of late is still my game I haven't really drawn anything lately. Today I thought I should try my hands at a pixel-art character profile, which is something I've never done before.

I'm kind of luke-warm on it. It doesn't look too bad, but I'm also not ethusiastic about it either. Not sure if the style is right, and I'm quite sure I don't like the shading. I don't know where I actually do want to take it though, so I don't really know how to fix it either.

I think it's technically fine, but it's a very bland pose - it feels lifeless, maybe try more of an action shot?

The other thing that might help is pushing the light/dark balance, your shade colours are very close to the light colours. (Use more black)

The left-side leg stands out to me as having a pretty wonky bend in the shin. It looks intentional, like it's a stylistic choice on your part, but I think that straightening it out a bit, which would then force the feet into a wider stance, would help make the pose seem more dynamic.

This is really cool, I love seeing progress happen.
Since you did ask: I do love your use of colour and contrast, every time. If I had to choose something to change, you changed the eyes to twice the size at one point, but kept the pupils small, which gives an intense stare and detracts a bit from the cuteness factor - I thought your first sketch with the giant eyes and pupils was the cutest. However, I can't see anyone complaining that they're not getting what they ordered here.

There's a number of just very small things not right with it that you probably can't see what's wrong since you've been staring at it too long. Lofi's got a point - the character is not doing anything, not wearing or holding anything that would say something about them, their expression is neutral and says nothing of their motivation. Add things that tell a visual story about your character, about their past or profession or what they do now (jumping on spikes).
gmc9987 pointed out the leg bend, which I think would not stand out if the dress would cut off either above or below the knee. Knee-length dresses are a fashion faux pas, they make dumpy people look shorter and thin people disproportionate.
Also if you look at where the thighs are, the arms are too short. The effect's made worse by the sleeve cutoff being just a tad too high to give the impression of a shirt that doesn't quite fit.
Sorry about the dunking, you know you got it in you to make good poo poo.

I'm designing a new project. I saw this cool shelf in ikea but it was way too goddamn much for cardboard ikea crap, so I'm gonna simplify it a bit to something that's relatively easy to build.

I'm super stoked, managed to get through all of Inktober on time, though I was at one point more than a week behind. Anyways, I haven't paid much attention to drawing as a hobby (usually I'm just doodling or sketching when I'm bored), but I do want to work on it more as my apartment is short on space needed for me to work on other hobbies. Anyways, I really like seeing people post pose/model studies and I kinda want to do that to practice as well. This probably sounds like a dumb question, but is there a source for nude models/references, or do you just draw pictures of porn, or a bit of both?

To contribute, here's probably my favorite sketch from Inktober for "Prickly"

Posemaniacs, croquis cafe on youtube, or this online tool are good. Deviant art (i know) has a surprising amount of good reference photos in the stock photo section. The hard part is finding references that are over 30 or not skinny. Also, it's worth checking out if there's a local life drawing session - doing it in the flesh is a very different thing, and really helps you get a better feel for the 3D shapes of the body.

Thanks for the comment, Sigma, I was really happy with it - the little pulpy strand bits in the middle made it feel super gross to me. Dunno why that specific bit made it body horror. Maybe it's just because it's my hand.

It's been a while since I checked it out, but https://www.characterdesigns.com has lots of galleries of models clothed, nude, with props, in costumes, etc. I also like https://www.deviantart.com/mjranum-stock/gallery/, a bit of variety in poses and costuming. I do agree with Lofi, if there's a local figure drawing group you should check it out. Most groups are very amateur-friendly and have artists of all skill levels and backgrounds, and the models tend to have a much larger variety of body types, fitness, gender, and age than you'll find in online resources.

Drawing from porn is alright in small doses, I guess, in the sense that it's a good idea to get reference from a variety of sources but 99% of porn out there is geared towards a specific audience, and if you rely on porn or pinups to build your personal language of anatomy it will be super obvious.

To clarify: nothing wrong with porn, or pinups, or erotic art - do what you want to do and like what you like, so long as everyone's a consenting adult I don't personally care but no one ever regretted having more artistic variety and tools under their belt. Also everyone loves to draw what they think is sexy or hot, it's easy because it's something you already pay attention to. It's worth it to hone your observational skills in directions other than sexy.

Calling that one done. I'm not totally happy, the composition doesn't really do much for me. Still, at least this time I remembered to design with bleed in mind, I'm slowly internalising that.

Like everyone else is saying, 100% find a local life drawing session. Nothing compares to in-person drawing. It's ok if you are a beginner or whatever, no one is judging you. Otherwise I use instagram sometimes as a good source of selfies for portraits or candid shots to draw but it's not a good way to learn anatomy or shading or anything technical. Drawing from edited and touched-up photos is just for fun.

I see what you mean about the composition, as an image it seems a little haphazard, but I really like the mood and the washed-out desert feel. Cool piece overall.

Last night's life drawing session pretty mediocre, only really happy with one of my sketches.

did a quick paintover, because you fell into every trap I did when first starting out!

- concrete directional lightsource & bolder shadows
- normalizing colors towards the same (warm, in this case) tones; saturated blues + reds can't exist together under natural lighting. this included adding some color to the completely desaturated clothes.

those are the two most important points! strong anatomy/designs/poses can come later, but shading + coloring something well is entirely predicated on a slavish devotion to understanding light.

- darker eyes compared to the other facial features to draw maximum attention
- added outlines to help wrangle the forms, though this is more of a stylistic choice
- shifted anatomy around a bit: lower face, more chin, longer arms, wider hair and redrew the legs to be longer & follow the curve of the body more accurately
- a few big creases in the clothes and a drop shadow to add some weight

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. The pose is kind of bland on purpose -- I wanted to use this as a profile for dialogue, sort of like this (lazy mockup incoming):

But now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just do more dynamic poses anyway. I'll see if I can come up with something. The leg bend is definitely intentional. It came from a previous version where I had varying width outlines that added on to the effect, but it ended up looking too crowded, so I went for this instead.

As for the shading/colours, I definitely agree. It's a general problem I have, where I am very uncomfortable with using stronger shades, so things just end up looking flat and bland instead.

Thanks also for the fashion advice -- I might also get rid of the skirt entirely, not sure yet where I want to go with all this to be honest. I'm decent at writing code, but garbage at coming up with a story, so I don't really know who this character is yet or what they do, and as such finding a good design isn't exactly easy.

Sorry for the long post with no content. I tried to draw somethin to add to it, but it all landed in the trash.

Oh hey, me too! I've got this post-apoc-old-west vibe going with this month's comic that I'm really into - grandad shirts with mohawks, robber baron suits with spikes, that sorta thing.

I've realised that an important part of drawing comics (for me at least) is to spend a while just drawing characters a load of times to let the design evolve naturally before I start work on the bits people will see.
