once all this poo poo is wrapped up and figured out I hope someone can link to the best upbeat, hopeful post/article/rundown of exactly what was accomplished in these midterms because I could absolutely use it for explaining to people I work with, hell even my family, that this was not a "devastating loss that we only took the house" and whatever. Like even my mom, who tends to keep up with the news at least, was confused as to why beto, et al losing wasn't a MASSIVE LOSS, and I had to explain to her(because CNN apparently won't) that the entire reason they were national news is that those were seats that should never have been even remotely competitive, but were within a hairsbreadth of being taken by a democrat, that's how strong the blue wave was. And apparently, this may have changed since wednesday since that's when we talked about it, but I guess they're not really talking about all the "small" victories such as governorships, state houses, judgeships, etc, which wiped out something like 40% of all of the republican gains in the last decade(and a half? I forget) in a single election. Breaking it down for her that way was really helpful.

And look at skeletor panic that his surefire voter suppression and attempted rigging and declaring victory then trying to be all NO TAKEBACKSIES plan is failing. there's few government officials more reprehensible(and fuckin' scary looking like seriously someone unlocked the Lament Configuration and that cenobite-lookin' motherfucker popped out, every picture of him grinning looks like it was taken right before he lunged at the cameraman to eat their face) than rick scott and if this whole plan blows up in his stupid skintight skullface this hellworld reality may be getting back on track

Colorado Decides, 2020!

House of Representatives
Colorado has 7 districts. Despite an initiative to create an independent redistricting commission modeled on the one used in California, it seems unlikely that gerrymandering is a major factor in Colorado. In the 2018 election, the Democrats split the state 4-3, gaining one seat. I talked to the mod over the Traditional Games forum, he said we can move the old Trump thread there but we have to hide it as a particularly ornate game of Nomic. It's fairly unlikely that the Democrats can pick up any additional seats in this state, but also unlikely that they lose more than one seat either.

Soft disagree on the gerrymandering argument. We did pass our ballot initiatives to create independent redistricting commissions and one of the necessary criteria for our new districts come 2020 is that they be competitive, defined as having a real shot at changing parties once every ten years. CO-3 is currently the (blue) city of Pueblo and the (red) entire western half of the state. CO-5 is essentially just El Paso county, if we're counting places where people outnumber livestock. Both of those districts are currently noncompetitive and both will likely be subject to changes once the redistricting commission is done with them; current voter registrations here indicate that so long as Dems can keep turnout up, any congressional race should be winnable.

I also never really considered what somebody up the page said about not being an American and wanting to read about Trump without the larger USPOL noise. Trump is an international problem and people all over the world have to deal with him and the fallout from the poo poo he does, but they don't necessarily want to hear people from various ideological gradients litigating domestic electoral strategy. We never got those kinds of posts from, say, UK or Germany or Aus posters in the Trump thread, they stayed in their respective political general threads. I think that distinction could have some merit.

But that's just my 2 cents.

I don't think you can abstract Trump from the rest of American politics, and if anything it is an artificial separation. Posters from other countries probably need to see the fuller picture anyway since the US is a bit hard to figure out unless you grew up there. Also, I don't think "containment" is a good thing especially if it essentially balkanizes the forum up.

Obviously, SA/D&D/thread rules are going to be enforced but honestly, the longer this thread is going the more that I am convinced it needs to stay merged. I don't have a problem with people agreeing to disagree, but not seeing the arguement of the other side is something else.

That's all fair. Granted, things have not been nearly as bad as I imagined they would be since I saw that the threads were going to be merged.

All I can say in opposition is that in the last two years I've been in some mentally dark places, and generally the Trump Thread made it better while USPOL made it worse. DemsBad posts on this forum in my admittedly limited experience can often lead to an infectious level of misery wallowing. I was very happy to have even a soft refuge where I could still talk about the topic at hand and thus work through it on some particularly dark days, rather than feeling compelled to just completely switch off and hope I could process it alone because I knew going into the thread would be mental agony.

That said, if the end result is making the "USPOL Content," better instead of making the "Trump Thread," content worse, then it was a good decision for all the reasons you said, and thus far that seems to have been the result for the most part. So I'll quit metaposting now.

We're already not seeing the other side of the argument because we ran off any right wingers years ago. The current ideological divide here is Lenin on the left and Bernie Sanders on the right. It's nowhere near an accurate reflection of the ideological divide in the US, which is fascists vs any non-republican.

It was never a sensible divide. Obviously Trump is uspol. It was really "uspol for people who think voting for Democrats, however flawed they may be, is the best way out of this" and "uspol for people who want to yell at that first group"
