We could tell you that during his presidential run.

But hey remember when our soldiers made the black box of the Rwanda president plane disappear and then sold weapons to the pro-genocide hutu government (who formed itself inside a french ambassade) and let them ran through our "secure" blue helmet zone with their troops so they could reach Zaire to hide? I guess the calls in France not to do that were "populist demagoguery" too. And the worst part, we still don't know exactly why (or for whose petty profit) our country did it but the suspected reasons are all loving terrible.

I am now sure we will also remember down the line that we are selling weapons to a pro-journalist-killing Saudi government that is doing it's best to starve a few million of Yemeni to death but hey at least we know it's to save the profit of a few rich industrialist families (you know like Saint-Domingue, Algeria, Indochina, the list go on and on...). :smithicide:

So, Kanak Caledonia independence referendum, what do you expect?

I've just got back from a holiday in New Caledonia. I'm a British-Australian. The polls were leaning towards a 'non' vote. I can't see the European descended New Caledonians wanting to break ties with France and even a portion of Kanaks don't want to either. It is by far the richest Pacific island group with a very high standard of living (for most, not all) and it's noticably wealthier than say Vanuatu or the Cook Islands. The cost of living there is eye-wateringly high though and even as Australians who are used to paying high prices, we found the cost of meals and car hire really high. Like, really really high. If your prices makes Australians wince, then you know they are bad!
We only saw parts of Nouméa and the south of the Grand Terre. In Noumea there didn't seem to be any outward signs of anything going on. Driving out towards Yaté there were lots of Kanak flags along the roadside and 'oui' spray painted onto roadsigns. We saw one French flag.
I'll be watching for the results, but I think it will be No. The Australian govt would prefer a no vote too.

Final results are tighter than predicted: 56.4% for no to independence. Polls generally predicted over 60%.

Participation rate was over 80%, which is pretty good. Two further referenda are allowed to take place according to the Matignon Agreement.
