Yeah, I'm going to echo the opinion that the little details have been very good. Going by the previous episodes, I was expecting their own eras to not even get touched, but those were handled really well in this episode instead. At least, they were definitely handled a lot better than I'd have expected.

Demicol posted:

Not sure if I just didn't notice before, but this episode had some gross sound effects when some of the zombies turn their necks.

You're not alone. This is the first I've noticed it and its so gross and so good that they put that in. Honestly, I'm shocked that a zombie idol group with gross noises actually works as well as it does, and it seems pretty popular in Japan as well?

I love how the solution to Yugiri is she just kinda rolls with the punches, even though she may as well be on an alien planet at this point. The Legendary Yamada Tae still remains the best though.

that honestly seems like a key skill a courtesan would have, so it checks out

The character designs really do match their manner of death.

Ai being covered entirely in bandages because her skin fried to a crisp and Junko looking like she has different skin patches match that they probably couldn't find all her pieces

I could read between the lines. They wanted to see the alien.
Do you think she fell down on her own or did she just stay standing on stage until someone came to take her away?

I feel like Yugiri has to be that way, otherwise we'd spend a lot of time explaining stuff.

(Yamada Tae is definitely on another level though. I'm a fan of Saki, but Tae is definitely the best zombie girl.

I'm starting to like all the Zombie Girls due to her varied approaches:
  • Sakura is obviously sorta like the audience surrogate in that she's trying to figure out what's her post-life deal gonna be like... but she's also not a complete pushover or a blank slate MC.
  • Saki is loving awesome because she just wants to start poo poo and have fun.
  • Lily seems like the cute little kid... until she starts making cutting remarks and you're like "Wait, why is an elementary school-aged girl so drat snarky?"
  • Yuugiri rolls with the punches and seems to be easily adaptable/incredibly talented (which makes sense, since to be an Oiran you had to be an incredibly proficient entertainer)
  • Junko seems oddly shy and kinda boring... until you realize all the hangups she has due to the fact that she used to fly solo and was often used to things in this particular way
  • Ai was kinda my sore point... but these past episodes have totally sold me on her.
  • Oh and Tae. Tae is awesome because she probably has a really interesting backstory... but right now she's a gag-manga character incarnate and the writers seem to be using her really well.

I agree with pretty much all of that, some other stuff I've noticed as the episodes have progressed:
  • Saki has kind of become the "team mom" and protector of the other girls. I think it's mostly because she's grown to see the rest of the girls as her new "gang" that she needs to lead.
  • Tae, despite being unawakened, still seems to have developed some level of awareness and can read the mood to a degree, at least when food isn't directly involved. She responds to commands from the other girls and doesn't constantly go off the rails during the dance numbers or anything now. I imagine it probably took a fair amount of training (and probably treats) from the other girls though.
This may still be an "idol show" at its core, but drat if it isn't a really fun and interesting take on the genre.

Yeah Tae is good at mimicking. One of my favorite little parts of the new episode was her trying to copy Kotoro's kabuki routine.

I like that Saki is the leader of the group, but Sakura is clearly her #2 and it’s both of them together that manage to make this little group work.

I feel we need a Yugiri episode and I can't wait until we get one. She just seems so interesting in how she takes everything in stride.

Interesting that we know Sakura got hit by a truck in 2008 but her character bio on the official website is blank while all others (except Yamada) has a exact date of death and other info.

Also apparently Yamada was age 29 at death???

It makes an odd sort of sense - she's the tallest member of the team.

It's gonna turn out Sakura instigated everything happening, invented the zombification process, picked the members of the team, then offed herself so she could become a zombo.

I did notice the audience member referencing to how stiff the girls are too, and with that scene juxtaposed with the Iron Frill dance I'm guessing it's a deliberate artistic choice beyond just saving budget (not that these can be mutually exclusive either).

Ai and Junko are good, but ehhhh....still felt like this ep was pretty uneven. I didn't really feel like producer-san's big inspirational speech was at all earned, and the production values on the performance were just bad. I don't really care if it was intentional, it actively took me out of the scene, big time.

if they keep balancing wacky stuff like ep5 with a few of these more character-focused eps i think i'll be pretty happy. i'm pretty attached to all the characters by now, Ai/Junko/Saki are real standouts, and i just wanna see them do well. Kotaro's general abrasiveness doesn't quite match with him getting an inspirational speech this ep, if only because i feel like all early gags of his cruelty aren't as in line with "secretly wants to help them succeed" compared to him obviously brushing off Sakura this ep with a backup plan to take matters into his own hands.

also cg seemed better this week, once they got past the point of Ai just kinda sucking due to her nerves. looking forward to their eventual 2d treatment like Iron Frill though...
