Sigh , we've had this discussion multiple times over the last two years and what it comes down to is that Trump has spent the majority of his presidency alienating the groups that would be required to pull of a successful coup, without the IC, National Law enforcement (read FBI) and Military on his side such an action would be impossible for him. I mean yeah he could declare the election invalid, he could declare what ever the gently caress he wants but come inauguration day the Secret service would escort his rear end to the door as the new administration takes power.

The only way he stays in the White House after the 2020 election and inauguration is if he wins reelection.

I'd sooner expect Donald to successfully cancel the election altogether than successfully invalidate the result after the fact. And I don't expect him to do the former, especially not after watching how he handled midterms.

Though on a related note, I learned during this year's primaries that you don't actually have to live in the district you want to be a US Representative for. The guy I wanted for the Democratic nom actually lives outside the boundaries of it but lives very close and used to live in the district before it was redrawn and it's a lovely gerrymandered mess anyway so him not living in the actual boundaries mattered not to me.

If your reaction to a person in position of at least some power when they agitate for a more muscular policy on climate change, an actual existential threat to the entire human race, is to tut-tut about how she's being immature, or a poor sport, or not recognizing the true enemy, you are a loving idiot. It is okay to admit that Democrats need to be pushed way to the left on climate policy, people are such babies. "...creating a vision of the sort of society you want to have in miniature"
I think some people are missing what AOC and the protest group were doing. It wasn't getting Pelosi to re-implement the committee, it was to ask for stronger commitments for 100% renewable energy from the committee.

Remember that the proposal that came out of the committee the last time was a weak cap-and-trade system. AOC wants a much stronger commitment towards a "green new deal"

Personally I think AOC is going to be a strong advocate for the progressive movement, help their voices be heard, but yet do it in a way that doesn't alienate the establishment Democratic wing, which makes it more likely for her, and their, demands to be heard.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if Pelosi takes AOC under her wing. It would be to her, and the Democratic Party's, own benefit to do so.

I mean, no, I don’t literally think she had them arrested per se, although it’s possible. But she should be calling for their release, saying how there was no need for police involvement, etc., if she really believed this tweet. You can’t say you find them inspiring and great when they were led out of your office in handcuffs.

I'm not trying to defend Pelosi here but apparently there were about 200 people (no way they would have fit inside I assume) outside her office, so I imagine the cops would be the ones doing the arresting under their own initiative of getting people out.

Casey is a Scranton pro-life catholic Democrat who, like... exemplifies that sort of PA voter. Certainly a better fit than Santorum's weird evangelical brand of Catholicism.

Edit: he's also part of a political dynasty in the state and would have followed his father as governor if Ed Rendell (yes, that Ed Rendell) hadn't beat him in the primary on the back of the Philly Democrat vote.

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

It's literally the Capitol Building, there are always cops there and a million staffers and who knows how many other people. It doesn't require Pelosi herself calling the police and I'm pretty sure the cops have a chain of command that operates separately from the House members, though maybe she could call the police chief and ask him to go easy, I dunno.

Cops love arresting people and hate protestors. These protests are generally angling to get arrested because they want to be disruptive and make noise and get attention (note that this is a good tactic and these people are incredibly brave and laudible). It just doesn't require Pelosi to be antagonistic towards them for this to have happened. I'm sure there are lots of other offices there, as well. 200 people standing in a hallway is disruptive by nature, which cops hate.
