alphabettitouretti posted:This poo poo too: Now, now you can get a job in prison that will pay you a princely sum of £15.50 a week and you get 50p a day just for being in prison! All you need to take out of that is 10p rent per day and 7p for the TV (unless you're on your own then it's 14p). Why as long as you don't mind not buying soap, shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream, razors or a toothbrush, and maybe a bar of chocolate or some squash because just having prison food will drive you insane you'll be quids in. Then when you're out you may have all the fun of get arrested again for associating with other offenders even though you live in a hostel with them, or perhaps have a can of lager or something. So back to prison you go and your UC is mostly stopped. After a few weeks you're stuck in front of a judge who thinks it's pointless and petty to put you in prison so you're released from the courthouse. Now all your stuff is still at the prison so you can't get there because you have no money (and possibly only the clothes you're standing in), only a train ticket to the destination of your choice. You also don't get the £46 either.

I would say that based on my personal observations that the homeless crisis in many cities in the UK is equal to and in some cases worse than in many cities in America. Also the homeless in the UK occasionally play melodies on penny whistles to indicate that they are begging, which seems to me to be particularly medieval and degrading. I think what upsets me most about this tradition is that it dates to the 1500's, and every time I see it I am reminded of the fact that no solution has been found for the welfare of the poor over hundreds of years. It reminds me that beggars played those whistles huddled in the streets 500 years ago, they still play them today, and I don't see much that gives me any hope that beggars won't be doing the same 500 years from now. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-43837584

The culture of post-war Britain seems like it was pretty socially oriented, and people like Corbyn also give me some hope that those forces still exist in the UK, but I also see that there very many who want to make life as Dickensian as possible, and it makes me worry about you guys. twoday has issued a correction as of 00:16 on Nov 14, 2018 |

May probably wants it quiet too because let's be honest, who is realistically going to be happy about what's in it?
|
# ? Nov 14, 2018 10:58 |

There is no deal that makes everyone happy. Most people would be happy for brexit in name only where nothing changes except we lose all voting rights because functionally very little changes for most people and brexit is finally loving over. The only people who actually care then are the no deal brexiters who're hoping to make insane money and gently caress over the population for ideological reasons. Unfortunately they make up a rather large number of current MP's even if its extremely unpopular otherwise

Yeah it was always going to go this way. Remainers want to stay, which is a pretty straightforward position. But leavers voted for a billion different reasons and will never be satisfied with any outcome. Meanwhile the people in charge know it's a terrible idea but are desperately trying to find some middle ground that keeps enough people happy that they can stay in power.

The House of Lords, which is like 90% not hereditary, was legitimately the only functioning oversight on the government trying to rush through a completely antidemocratic, no checks whatsoever rewrite of every single law after Brexit before summer but I guess that was 4 entire months ago so it's quite easy to forget, also it does have a stupid name I agree.

Problem is, the best feature of it is that it isn't packed by sycophants reliant on the largesse of the government of the day for their privileges. Kick out the last of the hereditary lot, toughen up the disciplinary procedures and cut their benefits (especially if they don't turn up) and it'd be an anachronistic but effective chamber.

Get random people to do it for a few years at a time imo. If you make it elected then it mostly won't be useful as an advisory/oversight body. I guess you're always going to have problems with possible clique forming but it's not like we don't have that in the HoC at the moment.

Fill it based on wealth levels in various regions. But inversely-proportional. The poorest bits of the UK have the most representatives. Also make it random like jury-duty.
