The new narrative seems to be that evil SJWs are insulting Stan Lee and that's driving people towards cgate again. I assume what's actually happening is people just making the usual statements about Lee having a very contentious and mixed history in comics witj Kirby etc and it's being blown up by the usual reprobates?

I mean, it's the Internet and there's a fair bit of "Stan Lee was a greedy corporate hack leeching off of Jack Kirby's creativity gently caress that guy he never did a single thing good other than dying" style hot takes, but those have existed at least since the 1980s. Some of them were performatively extreme, my favorite one being pulling this quote out as a great encapsulation of Stan Lee's career, and not even the worst thing he did: This story is pretty unflattering to Stan Lee, he was racist and drove away a black comic artist! Except:  I think this is the only 'novel' anti-Lee thing I've seen cropped up since his passing.

Bringing Lee into the conversation does add a weird dimension to CG. They talk about going back to the comics were when they were younger, and the misplaced belief that comics were non-political back in the good old days, but if you look at Lee (and others) output during their peak you see that Lee and Kirby created Black Panther, X-Men comics were a stand in for minorities, Spiderman was just a regular shlub trying to do the right thing for others etc. The stories being pumped out by Marvel during Lee's tenure were about acceptance and tolerance.

Also, to be honest, it is actually pretty easy to get a gun in New York. You just have to go to your local municipality and fill out some paperwork and pay a small fee. Sometimes they require you to take a safety course, but if you have a clean criminal record they don't scrutnize you too much. They probably should though. I've always thought Maher was an unfunny hack, and lost even most respect for him when he made his talk show into a forum for people like Milo Y. and Steve Bannon, but that really pissed me off. I have a scholarly article coming out next year about comics, so on top of dissing Stan Lee and all comic book fans, I got so steamed when he said that kind of writing isn't even real scholarship. I'm sure he has plenty of advanced degrees to know the difference.
