Yui needs to be either much less, or much more, important. A strong AI who is kind-of-sort-of the main characters' daughter is a weird thing to be largely ignoring.

the parent-child relationship stuff seems so one-way with her that i feel like they should just drop it entirely. it was awful to begin with but now it just seems sad.

Every episode just convinces me more that I really should just put two hours of my time into watching the movie because I'm missing a lot of references here. A movie that actually affects a series, that's not something I'm accustomed to! The focus on real-life searching was neat this episode. Asuna leaving her disguise was incredibly stupid but hilariously so, and ultimately, that's something I can enjoy. And I enjoyed this episode!

I'm glad the explanation of what's going on is just as dumb as I was hoping. Of course no mention of their top-down apparently strong AI daughter sitting right there, but maybe the original covered that and they cut it.

Are we going to have just as long a discussion about technobabble in this thread as in the Bunny Girl-senpai one? It seems somewhat odd that Asuna didn't ask to visit Kirito in the virtual world, and not offered to either, but maybe there's just an implicit agreement not to disturb the Science?

Oh my god they explained everything and it was just as stupid as I hoped. Also nice backronym Kawahara, you really don't know any English, do you? I'm not sure why you'd even need a bottom-up AI to kill people, bots in FPS kill people all the time and they're extraordinarily weak AI. You could probably build a Killer Yui in like a year of software development for how SAO-world works, maybe even outsource it to the Gun Gale people for beta testing.

I find it odd that the Rath guys are incredibly pumped about one of the AIs breaking the Taboo Index but they seemingly think that Alice crossed over into the Dark Territory of her own free will and not because she tripped. I mean are the only eyes they have on the world that big giant skyview? Why aren't they following Kirito constantly if they think he's the wild card that'll force the AIs to evolve? nielsm posted:Are we going to have just as long a discussion about technobabble in this thread as in the Bunny Girl-senpai one? Yeah I kind of expected them to technobabble a reason she couldn't just join the simulation or just straight up tell her that they wouldn't let her. I also really thought it was weird that they'd even let her contact the whole rest of the cast, much less speak freely about everything. Like no spy poo poo or anything, just go tell the whole world, "Hey the JSDF are building military AIs using ghost babies", it's cool. Dexo posted:
Maybe I still just don't understand the technobabble/philosopophybabble, but if she has both a complex handle on human emotions and can simulate them well enough, I don't see why she's not just as good as a bottom-up one. I mean technically she's already done the protocol-breaking thing the guys at Rath are trying to force the Fluctlights like Alice to, first when she made herself appear in-game despite being prevented, and second when she one-shotted that one boss to save Kirito and Asuna. And yeah, I'm sure Yui couldn't fool a human into thinking she was human long-term, though it's hard to tell since she's spent way more time being an adorable franchise mascot pixie than even attempting to behave like a human. I mean I know it seems like I'm trying to poke holes in the plot but frankly everything about Yui's existence bothers the hell out of me especially now that the plot is now dealing primarily with AI development. All that said I am smiling ear-to-ear at the seeming reappearance of Kayaba the Friendly Digi-Ghost and can't loving wait for the next episode.

Well this latest episode might be one of the worst episodes of anime I've seen in ages. - Boring and illogical exposition - Incredibly cringy motivations, reasoning, actions and interaction/dialogue - Boring fake drama that has zero weight SAO is dumb but usually it's at least entertaining.

That bothered me too, but then I realized that they didn't have much of an alternative to letting Asuna and the professor go. For all they know, the professor has set up her computer so that if she disappears or dies, it will tell all her colleagues that the Rath guys are responsible. At the very least, it would be suspicious if she disappeared. Similarly, it would look really suspicious to the rest of Kirito's harem if Asuna didn't contact them.

Is Kayaba's girlfriend more present before this arc in the light novel? It feels like they're really trying to make me care about her internal conflict which would be easier if she hadn't been introduced literally an episode ago. Also I always kinda presumed that Kayaba was logged in somewhere normal and the reason the police never jacked him out was because he was trapped in the same death-game thing where they'd just be killing him if they tried. The idea that for the full 2 years or so he was just logging in and out from his remote forest cabin with no one ever tracking down the by-this-point world-renowned fugitive who regularly makes login requests to the government held SAO servers is just dumbfounding.

It wouldn't be the most unbelievable thing here.

The explanation in the novel is that they want an un-manned craft that can win against a human piloted jet fighter and remote-controlled ones are too vulnerable to jamming (and I guess a regular AI would not suffice). However all the AI's they have right now are incapable of murder and they don't know why, so when Alice did break protocol they now want her to so they can figure out how to make more like her. This conversation is like 1/3rd of the entire volume so they naturally left out a lot in the anime. Not that it still makes any more sense. I mean, they should have backups of the kids fluctlights from after their raising was complete. Like, we know they can copy souls and store the copies, and that the copies can be kept in stasis without being aware so they don't go insane. So it should be trivial for them to roll back the scenario to whatever point they like and just flash everyone's brains with a new mindstate. But of course, the writer isn't sufficiently imaginative to really think through the implications of his premise. The really big issue is how they expect to take these disembodied consciousnesses, which have an entire life experience of being fully autonomous human beings, and somehow jam them into a hunter-killer drone and force them to shoot people for the SDF. Like, if tomorrow morning you woke up and found you were in a quadrotor and someone was saying "Hi, you're our killer robot now, go shoot those dudes!" how well would that go for them?

I just occurred to me that if Volo kills Kirito here, it will be exactly what Rath is trying to accomplish: Kirito's influence making the AIs capable of murder. Obviously the main character won't just die like that, but it's an interesting thought. Edit: Although if that happens, Asuna will retaliate by publicly exposing Rath, so it's still less than ideal from their perspective. It's like they read complaints about the first few episodes being slow and said, "oh they want the plot to move, huh? Oh, we'll make it loving move!" I know that's not how shows get made obviously, but it is crazy how the first few episodes had people complain about things being slow and now pulled a total 180 and are speeding through huge swaths of source material. I guess if I was playing devil's advocate I could say that going this fast is a clever way of showing how time is sped up in Underworld after 2 episodes in the real world, but that'd probably be giving the showrunners too much credit, and it'd be dumb regardless. Oh also since this seems to be the de facto SAO thread, the dub cast got announced for Alternative: Gun Gale Online, if anyone cares: quote:
and it'll be on both Netflix and Hulu.
