Isn't encouraging hoarding of semi-perishable goods when the threat is so existential/low probability bad for the economy?

Someone who knows about cars tell me about the gas going bad, so I can feel better about this tank truck I filled with nothing but fuel stabilizer.

Hoarding does nothing as long as few people are doing it. But if everyone tries to drive around with a full tank of gas problems start.

As for gas, The Walking Dead is full of poo poo with people driving around 5 or 6 years after a zombie apocalypse. Diesel might last longer, but gasoline would be worthless even with additives. I think the latest season has them using biofuels, which is at least plausible.

hoarding -> mass rot -> mass replacement purchases

It is, in fact, good for the economy, if you consider "the economy" selling poo poo and nothing else

100LL (aviation fuel) has a hell of a shelf life. Like 10+ years. Not sure I'd want to FLY on 10 year old avgas, but it runs small equipment just fine.

As for the rest on Walking Dead - the magical batteries that are all reaching their shelf life but are somehow still often charged, 5+ year old tires with nothing to replace them with (which are somehow still inflated on like every car they come across).

First timer here, so please go easy.

Some context to start:

I'm going to a wedding in Mexico the first weekend of November (Thurs-Sun), and I still haven't purchased a plane ticket. I only did this because I thought my company's commission check was coming to me sooner and I would just bite the bullet on high fares, but turns out the check won't come until the 31st of this month (I work in IT sales btw). I have one maxed-out credit card and the bank won't let me increase the credit line, I don't have really anything in savings because I was laid off in May this year and am still in heavy catch-up mode. This wedding is somewhat of a reunion for a group of old friends who mean a lot to me and the groom has helped me get through a lot of stuff in my personal life, so I truly cannot miss this wedding. Plus I've already been sucked dry paying for my hotel room.

I know that if I just had the money now, I can pay it back at the first of the month with my commission check, but I don't want to get hosed by any fast-cash scams. I received a $1400 unsolicited loan check in the mail, I'm guessing that's bad news and I should stay away, correct?

Are there any safe ways to get cash quickly to where I can pay off the $1000 in a couple weeks? Thanks in advance!

Weddings are BWM. Destination weddings are slightly less BWM for the hosts, or at least a lot of people have tried to sell me on that. Problem is that even if they are cheaper to the host, destination weddings just put a bunch of extra cost burden on the guests. Especially in the case of those in the wedding party or super close family friends who are expected to be there.

That depends pretty heavily on how many guests have to fly in anyway and how expensive the destination city is vs. how expensive the city that you live in is. All the relatives flying into some middle of nowhere state college town can be more expensive than a destination wedding somewhere way more fun.

Yeah this happens constantly. Ask someone on a Friday at 4pm if they want to leave an hour early unpaid and they'll generally say yes.

Yeah after doing the math, that’s not a bad trade, depending on how much money someone makes. It’s a weird way to do vacation though. Context is important. What kind of money are people making there? Is this a supplement to a more standard vacation time arrangement?

We were offered that at a prior job and it's a nice deal depending on how much you value time off.

I wish I could buy some vacation time at my current job.

My company allows us to buy up to a week of extra vacation time at our hourly rate (based on a calendar year of 2080 hours for those that are salaried) . It used to be 2 weeks and I wish it still was. I am happy to take a week less of pay per year to get that extra week off.

The benefit at my company is pre-tax, since you are just agreeing to a reduction of your annual income in exchange for a corresponding amount of time off.

I might be misunderstanding how this benefit works, but isn't it the equivalent of just taking 3 unpaid days?

We had something like this at one of my old employers. You could trade one week of vacation for equivalent pay or vice-versa to increase your vacation time. It was all treated on a pre-tax basis and they just adjusted the pay accordingly. That being said, it was done at our exact pay rate and not a set value, so you didn't have to work out whether or not you were paying a premium to get a few extra days or not.

Yes, but the cost is spread over the entire year instead of having one short paycheck. Also, it would be a lot harder to justify taking 3 unpaid days without some sort of leave to cover it. Then it would be subject to manager approval, and if I didn't have a really good reason for it would be denied. I am basically guaranteed the time off if I purchase it through ther benefits program. My manager will start bugging me about it if all my vacation isn't scheduled by around August because we have a "use it or lose it" policy on vacation time, and they get poo poo from their managers if a bunch of their people have their vacation hours expire.

This really, really depends on the medication and the conditions under which it's been stored. The expiry is based on how long of stability studies we have data to support in the filing (with the standard being 2-3 years based on FDA expectations and what a business cycle can deal with), but there are a lot of medications where the expiry either barely makes it to that limit.

Basically, if you see a limit shorter than two years in a modern product, it means it. There's no way we'd have done shorter than two years unless that product was just going to poo poo beyond that. Older medications or medications that are OTC, less so the case with this because nobody's going to go back and do a five-year ambient study on something they can't sell for more than $2.00 anyway, or where re-opening the product for regulatory inspection might threaten the current approval state (older products under older standards, etc).
